I don’t mind a little detective work.

the days seem to blend together the longer time wears on. the only reason jill’s managed to keep everything straight is the journal in her pocket, a memento from a past life that’s marked with tallies and the occasional observation. sometimes she tears out a page to leave notes behind, advising other travelers of safe havens, warning them of dangers in the area – a difference that could mean life and death for other survivors, as it has for her in the past. she’s sat at a rickety old table under the cover of stone and iron, taking down notes on that day’s supply run, when the creak of heavy door opening grabs her attention.

she knows the look rick is wearing on his face well;  knows that there’s little she or anyone can do to assure him that things aren’t as dim as they look. medical supplies are low; the hospital is a last resort and the only one they have left. the recon team embarks for it tomorrow – she’s given up insisting that she can do it alone, is still shielding her inherent resistance against the virus in favor of focusing on the survivors around her, rick being one of them.

❛ hey, cheer up. today wasn’t so bad. ❜ hand slides into her pocket, pads of her fingers running over cool foil before she presents the multi-colored wrapping, sincere smile resting comfortably on her lips. a worthy distraction they both need. ❛ any chance you want to split this? it’s too rich for me to eat in one sitting. ❜
