super simple low-effort ao3 summary methods that are 1000% better and 1000% less annoying than just saying you suck at summaries:

copypaste the first few lines of the fic. u already wrote ‘em. let ‘em be their own damn hook

if ur feeling fancy & don’t mind showing ur hand a bit, copypaste the first few lines of the fic that u feel are esp. Important or Interesting - the ones where u first start getting into the real meat of things

state the main tropes! theyre probably already in ur tags - just say them again - maybe as a full sentence if ur feelin fancy. or with a joke if ur feelin Extra fancy

ask a question. pose a hypothetical. eg what happens if u take [character] and put them in [situation]?

make an equation. [character] + [thing] = [outcome]

just write like a one-sentence summary of what the fuck is going down. just one (1) sentence. doesnt matter if it doesn’t cover every important aspect. or if it sounds bland. any summary sentence is gonna be miles better than “idk i suck at summaries”

just…explain the fic like u would to a friend? it doesnt have to be a polished back of the book blurb. it can just be “[pairing] coffee shop au, but like, still with murder, and also i made everyone trans. enjoy”

just stick a meme in there

some tips on writing characters with smell sensitivity!

I have noticed that very little autism/SPD representation mentions this type of sensitivity, even though it’s not uncommon among autistic people or people with SPD. I personally, as an autistic person with some smell sensitivities, would like to give some tips on things to include when writing characters with this sensitivity based on my own and others’ experiences :)

-Noticing how certain places smell, especially if it’s not their house or somewhere they go every day (eg work/school). For example, a while after my grandparents moved out of their house, me and my mom went back to get some stuff and I noticed that it still smelled the same as it had before they moved out

-People and animals also have their own particular smell, especially if it’s someone they would be putting their face close to. For example, an autistic child might be comforted by their mom’s smell

-Going off those two points, it’s often hard to describe what something smells like if it’s very familiar to you. For example, thinking back to how my grandparents’ house smells, I’d describe it more as a “warm” and “homely” smell than with any more descriptive adjectives. This is often different for more unfamiliar smells

-Smelling people’s shampoo/soap or deodorant! Or being able to notice when someone just got out of the shower based on their smell

-Enjoying (or hating) scented soaps

-An increased sensitivity to taste - smell is associated with taste

-Noticing a dramatic change in their sense of taste when they’re sick or their nose is plugged

-Different rooms in their house have different smells - I personally always avoided the laundry room in my house because it “smelled weird”.

-Developing adaptation methods to counteract bad smells - I developed the ability to limit my breathing to just breathing through my mouth without having to plug my nose so I wouldn’t have to smell things

-If a smell is annoying to NT people, it can often be unbearable to someone with smell sensitivities

-Feeling nauseous or dizzy when exposed to certain smells

-Having trouble eating when someone else is nearby making food, especially if the foods are very different (such as someone cooking meat while they’re trying to eat dessert)

-loving (or hating) scented candles and/or air fresheners

-having to wash their hands several times to get rid of the smell from their hands if they touch something gross

-trouble cooking/making food in general due to the smell, or not wanting to stay in the kitchen if someone is making food

-difficulty eating in cafeterias due to all the smells

-not liking the smell of someone else’s food (do they not want to offend that person? It can add an extra layer)

-especially for a character who is a preteen/just starting puberty, a factor they might have to contend with is dealing with the changing smell of their and their peers bodies and/or difficulties with the smell of deodorant

-being really sensitive to one particular smell (they might like it, hate it, or be neutral towards it)

-they might know generally what someone has eaten recently, if they’ve brushed their teeth recently etc (usually would not know exactly what they ate but the general idea: for example, they might not know that someone ate spaghetti but they might know they ate something with tomato)

-unique/atypical smell likes and dislikes

-trouble going to certain places due to smell sensitivity (ie not liking going to the gas station because they hate the smell of gas)

-they may also be unusually undersensitive to ce

hope this helps anyone trying to write a character who might have these sensitivities! Feel free to add on in RBs with any experiences I may have missed :)
