Just in case I decide that I can’t be your friend. Let me tell you now why that would be. You can’t trust a man that looks you in your eyes, says “I can’t see myself with anyone else but you” without cracking a smile and in the same breath says I just want to be your friend. That’s a boy that has no regards for your heart. That’s a boy your mom was right about. We’ve been friends for a long time, and you’ve seen my heart get crushed plenty of times. You’ve seen guys sell me a dream and me pay with my heart and soul. You’ve seen them escape in the dead of night with the light in my eyes. You’ve been the guy before. I’ve hurt you too, but I would say you’ve hurt me more. Maybe because I’ve mostly suffered in silence, as I usually do, trying not to make myself so heavy on you. You know a few months ago when you told me you couldn’t be with me because you weren’t ready for a relationship?  A week later you were asking for my advice about another girl. A week. Part of my struggle with this is more me. You are awakening and have awakened demons that have been haunting me a long time. How can a boy that has been around to see me drag myself out of Athens, through Duke, to my first job not see me valuable enough to commit to? It doesn’t really matter. I can only take people in my life that silence the demons, not make them louder. I know it’s not your fault, It’s just where we find ourselves because of the decisions we have made up until this moment. I just want to take care of myself.
