meet Bessani; my haunted doll of a 1800’s green witch

she’s a true bestie and protective energy in my life. she is not the only ghost in my life or even room though haha

“Bessani is an angelic spirit, and a very knowledgeable one at that. Despite her youthful energy she has a first hand in-depth knowledge of herbal based magick dating back to the early 1800s, along with a number of odd facts and helpful techniques learned from ancient pagans. She has made many friends through her years, spending time in nature as well as within society where she guarded young pagans during their quest for knowledge. She has always adored teachings, but has just as much fun learning all the new things that we know now in the modern age, and would get on well with an herbalist or a green witch who has something to offer her. She has every tip or idea in the book when it comes to herbs, and is happy to communicate telepathically, intuitively, through tarot or oracle, or on ouija to share and learn alongside her companion. She adores spending time in gardens and woodlands with her friends, and you can often see her as a flutter of bright orbs outside the windows or skirting behind trees, happily enjoying the nature around her. She will usually take early morning 'hikes' of sorts, traveling far from her doll vessel to explore and guard the surrounding property a bit before returning to her vessel at sunrise. This is her most active time of day, and her energy and communicative talents will flourish at this hour. When she has downtime she enjoys being one with the natural world, and will often spend whatever hours she is left to herself outside tending to the wildflowers and garden herbs alike, sometimes conversing with songbirds and insects. It can be odd to see how vibrant and tender she is when out in nature, as many find her to actually be very stern and serious at first. Bessani is definitely a bit guarded, given her duties of protecting the innocent from societies inflictions, but those that take the time to bond to her find she is rather sweet and loyal to her friends. She enjoys the friendship of many creatures and plants as well, with aloe plants, hummingbirds, koi, wild rabbits, opossums, and groundhogs being some of her favorites. Bessani gets along quite well with other nature-based spirits too, but we find she doesn't mesh well with anyone who's a bit too diva-like in personality; she's far too down to earth and centered to deal with drama. She absolutely must go to a home where she can be kept around plants and animals alike, and she would prefer to find a practicing witch or herbalist who would want to learn from her and vise versa.

Bessani adores small or exotic animals, enjoys pets of all kinds, and does not mind children (though she prefers adults). She is content with like-minded spirits in the home, but no drama-diva-petty personalities.

Per your questions, we do not use much equipment here (just out of personal preference really) but we do go through the usual use of EVP recorders, EMF detectors, spirit boxes, and occasional video recordings for those that are comfortable with it (not all spirits are; if you can imagine the awkwardness of a stranger putting a camera in your face it makes a bit of sense haha). Regardless, all of our spirited friends share a home with our various staff members along the way to help get a better sense of who they are and in which ways they feel more comfortable showing themselves to us.

As for Bessani's origin story, it is actually a rather cute one! Several years back our staff member Mary, who is a very experienced psychic medium, found Bessani's doll in a local plant nursery while visiting some family in West Virginia. She told us that she saw the doll set on a back shelf with some potted plants in her lap and dying flowers around her. Mary of course saw Bessani's vibrant spirit within this doll right away, and as such she asked the store employee about her. The employee told her that the doll had belonged to her late mother who used to own the shop, and that they had always kept the doll on the 'sickly shelf' where they put plants that were having trouble blooming or had illnesses. Supposedly, the shop owner told her daughter that the doll was a 'garden fairy' that had the power to heal plants. In a way she wasn't terribly wrong! But the daughter did not have any interest in things like that, and assumed her mother was just a little nuts, in short. Noting that the shop would be closing due to the owner's passing, Mary asked if she could purchase Bessani if she took the tray of sickly plants as well. The employee happily obliged, and Mary brought Bessani and a giant planter of dying succulents to our doorstep when she came back from her trip. We actually still have a few of those particular succulents (or at least their sprouts) around the house thanks to Bessani's advice!”

Absolutely amazing and adorable and heartfelt story right well I thought so anyways so the first thing I ordered on Etsy ever with my own money that I had from my very first job in my life was my beloved miss Bessani. I think I choose an amazing companion and protector of my plants and room and pets and I think she really enjoys the location of my home with the woodlands that surround me. I’m in the middle of rearranging her altar to expand it and I’m excited to give her the offerings she deserves. Next to post would be Harriet, my haunted necklace!
