Notes on “Conflicts in semantic warrants in cataloging practices”
This 2017 article focuses on semantic warrant and the limits of universal standards. In approaching Korean knowledge representation as an American, I ought to consider he role of cultural influence. The conceptual technique UW PHD candidate Wan-Chen Lee proposes is semantic warrant. This concept allows consideration of how language shapes priorities of classification and cataloging practices. Her research with American and Chinese cataloging of rare materials evidences a lack of standard practices at the global level and a layering of multiple sets of rules determined by scope. These semantic relations are contextual. For example, how does a library choose a language for a catalog? How does one designate roles?
