Symptoms:
Nearly all of us would have had a stomach ache, general abdominal discomfort, followed by stomach upset, i.e., loose motion, frequent bowel movements with watery stool and at times, accompanied by vomiting. Well! More often than not it is caused by Diarrhoea that can be triggered due to bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections.
Diarrhoea could last for a day or two. However, serious conditions presenting other complications such as mucous in the stool, stomach ache, dehydration, etc. need medical attention for appropriate diagnosis by a Doctor. The doctor could order certain tests to be done and accordingly give some diarrhoea medicine and advise to remain hydrated to prevent dehydration. In case of dehydration, there are electrolyte imbalances in the body so the doctor could prescribe certain ORS.
Children are susceptible to infection as their body immune systems are still developing. Thus, they are prone to stomach infections and frequent bouts of Diarrhoea under unhygienic conditions, Diarrhoea in children, if not treated timely, can prove fatal.
Reasons for having Diarrhoea:
There can be many causes of Diarrhoea. Some of them are discussed here:
For those who are intolerant to milk and dairy products, in them, Diarrhoea can be triggered due to Lactose intolerance since these food products contain lactose. It may aggravate with advancing age because the levels of the enzyme that aids digestion of lactose reduces as one age.
Consumption of eating spoiled, contaminated or toxic food causes Diarrhoea.
Gastric Infections of the intestines or the stomach (Gastroenteritis), caused due to bacteria or viral infections may lead to Diarrhoea.

Gradually include semisolid to the diet and add low-fibre foods since till the bowel movements are normal. One can eat a small quantity of rice, toast, soda crackers, or bland chicken soup. Prevent dehydration and also keep the body hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids; juices, water and clear soup. It is essential to follow the Doctor's advice for the type of diet to have if Diarrhoea is accompanied by vomiting.
Maintain electrolyte balance in the body you can have something to drink that contains vital nutrients so that you do not become weak. Take probiotics, since it contains good bacteria that help maintain the balance of good bacteria in the gut.
Never indulge in self-medication. Please see a Doctor. The Doctor will diagnose the underlying cause for the Diarrhoea and accordingly prescribe diarrhoea medicine. The medicines could include anti-diarrhoeal medications; and or Anti-biotic. Some medicines may aggravate the condition, so the doctor will adjust the dose of such medicines.
