While being active in a spiritual community that holds many people from different countries and belief systems, it’s important to interact with them equipped with the proper respect they deserve. Here is a short list of acts and terms that are considered disrespectful! 

Whether you’re new to witchcraft or a seasoned veteran, there is still information here you will find valuable. I believe it’s important to talk about these things in a controlled manner so people realise that it’s not an attack when we say not to use these terms. Forward this post to a friend if you need to give them a gentle nudge away from some shady activities they may have been unwittingly pursuing. 

Smudging

One of the most incorrect terms used widely in the community, smudging is a specific ritual within Native American belief and spirituality that is exclusive to those practitioners and those practitioners alone. The non-appropriate non-Native equivalent of a similar act of cleansing is called smoke cleansing. Many people use the terms smoke cleansing and smudging synonymously when they are two different things! It’s extremely disrespectful to claim to smudge if you are not Native.

Dreamcatchers

While this one causes less offence, it’s still going to grant you an eye-roll from anyone educated on the matter. Dreamcatchers are again, aspects of Native culture. Dreamcatchers can be gifted or sold to non-Native people respectfully so long as the seller is of that culture themselves. Most of the time, however, non-Native shops exploit and make money from this iconic practice while the Native peoples continue to see none of the rewards for something that is theirs, which is why buying non-Native dreamcatchers is seen as offensive. Additionally, it is the words and energy woven into the dreamcatcher that gives it power. There’s little point in buying a cheap dreamcatcher from Becky on Etsy for the aesthetic.

Spirit Animals & Totems

Similar to Smudging, Spirit Animals and Totems are exclusive to Native American practise and simply can not be used unless you are a part of that culture. They are again, very specific terms that people have wrongly interpreted to be universal. If you wish to work with animal spirits in your practice, a more appropriate term to use would be a spirit companion, or simply an animal spirit.

Black & White Magic/Witchcraft

This is a niche issue and depending on who you ask you’ll have a different answer on if this causes offence or not. I can’t give a definite ‘Don’t use these terms, they are bad’ to you but I can say they are pretty dated and a good alternative would be to use light and dark magic instead. The term ‘Black magic’ holds racist connotations for many. ‘Black Magic’ is often seen as a negative force yet holds associations with hoodoo, voodoo and African spirituality. It puts non-western, non-white magic into an ‘other’ section, something nefarious to be feared, and innately implies a lack of moral purity. ‘White Magic’ is mostly considered to encompass modern spiritual healing,  western neo-witchcraft and neo-Wicca, and is painted as the ‘Good’ and moral choice. In other words, these terms create a subtle racial divide that leads to some unconscious potentially racist views of cultures outside of what the west considers the norm.

Closed or Partially Closed Cultures

There are countless religions which are open for anyone and everyone to join. Norse, Hellenic and Kemetic Paganism are just 3 examples.

However, many religions and spiritualities are closed to any who are not born into them. These cultures are often closed in order to protect the longevity, quality of information and ward against theft. As many of these practices rely on the wisdom and connection of ancient ancestors, it makes little sense for those not born into them to practise them and is believed the deity or spirit of the culture in question would be offended at someone trying to do so. 

As well as closed cultures, there are also such things as partially closed cultures and religions. These are initiation based; in order to practise them, you must have permission or have been introduced to the culture by someone already within it.

Wicca And Witchcraft

There has been a confusion of these two terms for a very long time. Wicca is a religion. Witchcraft is not. Witchcraft is a practice, a way of channelling energy to achieve a desired intent. It has no specific belief system. Christians can be witches and atheists can be witches. Wicca is a specific earth-based religion in which the followers also happen to be witches.

Wicca, ‘The Old Religion’

A lot of Wiccan authors will tell you that Wicca is the one main pagan religion that has been around for thousands of years; this is incorrect! It was a theory that the founder of Wicca, Gerald Gardner, picked up from a historian called Margret Murray. In one of her texts, she theorised the existence of one main continuous witch-cult religion. Wicca was based on this belief. This theory, however, has been disproven MANY times by other historians and is simply incorrect. Wicca was born in the 1950s, early 40s at a push. It was loosely based on a mishmash of late 19th and early 20th century texts combined with influence from African spirituality and a healthy dose of imagination. 

‘A REAL witch wouldn’t curse’ or ‘It is against the rules of witchcraft to curse people!’ or ‘You must follow the Threefold Law!’ or ‘You must follow the Rede’!

Whether or not a witch chooses to curse or not is entirely up to them. There is NO rule against cursing unless you belong to a religion that forbids it. There are no rules to witchcraft at all; it is a personal, secular experience that no one can tell you how to do. Both the Threefold Law and the Wiccan Rede are exclusive to Wicca and do not have to be followed if you are not a Wiccan.

Karma

The concept of Karma is not what you probably think it is at all. Not only is Karma exclusive to religions like Buddhism and Hinduism, the rough actual meaning of Karma is that the actions a person takes in this life will decide the fate of their next life.

Chakras

The use and knowledge of working with Chakras is again, a CLOSED practise belonging to Indian tantric religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism. Knowledge of Chakras has been so watered down and stripped of its identity at this point that any book you read on the topic is most likely for lack of a better term, new age nonsense. You do not have to use the term Chakra to pertain to energy centres within your body.

G*psy

This is an actual, racial slur against the Romani people based on European confusion of who the Romani are. The term came from the belief that the Romani were from Egypt. Do not use this ever; by many people, it’s considered just as offensive as the N word. An additional note to remember; different countries can have different incarnations of cultures and terms that often become confused. For example, the UK is home to many Irish Travellers, who also get the word G*psy thrown at them. The word Traveller can be taken as an insult to Romani people in the US, while it’s the actual politically correct term used by the British government in the official documentation for the Irish who are from this culture in the UK.

Paper Charm to Heal Another’s Heart

Anonymous said: Simple spells for trying to help heal another’s heartache?

This charm can also be performed on the self, if desired.

Needed:

a square piece of paper

a writing utensil suited to your paper

scissors

a candle and something to light it with

a fireproof dish

Optional ingredients:

herbs relating to healing and love

crystals pertaining to healing and love

glue

Optimal spell timing: 

dawn or night

Monday, Thursday, or Sunday

waxing to full moon

Method:

Light the candle.

If you cannot use candles or have open flames, don’t worry about it.

If you opted to use crystals, set them on a flat, even surface, and place the paper between or before them. Write the target’s name on the piece of paper (full is preferable), and draw a sigil over their written name to assist in the healing of the heart.

White paper is fine, and lined works in a pinch, but feel free to use any colors that you associate with healing (e.g. blue or green), or love (e.g. red or pink). Alternatively, you can color on the paper or draw more symbols of love and healing on it before continuing on.

Fold the paper into an [origami heart], or just cut the paper into a heart shape.

If you opted to fold the paper into a heart via origami, you can fill it with herbs to use as a sachet for a boost of energies.

Hold the heart-charm in your hands and concentrate on the person. Focus on sending them feelings of love and healing. Fill the heart with positive energies, and the intent that your target will heal from their heartbreak and be able to feel all of the love that still surrounds them. Do this for as long as you feel is adequate for the charm to be charged.

You can either seal the charm and gift it to your target, or burn it to release the feelings and energies to send to them; if you are not able to light fires or use candles, tear it up into small pieces and give them to your target or allow the wind to carry it away (bonus points if the wind happens to be blowing in the direction of where your target lives).

If burning the charm, you can set it in a fireproof container and drop a match onto it. Alternatively, you can set a corner of the charm into an open flame, then quickly put it into a fireproof container to finish burning. Ensure that the fireproof dish is also set on a fireproof surface that will not heat up. If you opted to use herbs in the charm, depending on how dry they are, the charm may simply smolder and not completely catch on fire, and this is fine. Continue to burn it as much as needed before it is completely burned or singed, then dispose of the ashes. They can be released into the wind, kept in a vial or sachet and gifted to the target for further energies, or merely thrown out.

Remember to always practice [appropriate fire safety] when working with candles and burning paper!

Be careful if you filled the charm with herbs and you decide to burn it- ensure that the herbs you chose are safe to be burned!

Prayers for Suicidal Hellenic Polytheists

(I’m having a really bad suicidal day, so this is inspired by @aro–aphrodite)

May Zeus provide you the strength to live, and the safe refuge of his protection for when the urges become too much.

May Hera remind you in your darkest hours, the most important relationship is the one with yourself; and may she bless and strengthen the bond of that very union.

May Poseidon keep you safe in all voyages, including the journey that is life. May he prevent you from drowning in both your thoughts and the waters deep below.

May Demeter keep you warm and love you just like a mother. May she send forth gifts of a still soothed mind, and allow all your efforts in recovery to be fruitful.

May Athena, destroyer of Giants, slay the urges and intrusive thoughts too large to defeat on your own. May she protect you and bless you with the will to keep fighting.

May Apollon be by your side, whether it be during therapy or at your bedside in the ward. May he be a ray of light to give you a glimmer of hope.

May Artemis shield you, and provide you relief. May you never be thrown to the wolves, but rather have the courage to bear your teeth for your own defence.

May Ares cover your battle scars, and protect you from more. May he give you the courage of an entire army, and the support of one to. May you be reminded that you need not to win every battle to win the war.

May Aphrodite shower you with the love you deserve, including the love of yourself for yourself. May she remind and teach you that you are beautiful.

May Hephaistos provide you a creative outlet; a distraction to keep hands busy without a blade. May he teach you you can’t forge yourself without the flame, but you have been setting yourself on fire far too long.

May Hermes provide you a safe haven; be it a support group, or even just long drives in the rain to clear your head. May he hold your hand as you cross bridges, and let you find change on the ground after you do not jump.

May Dionysos put a smile on your face, and stand strong along side you, urging you to dance; he knows mental illness all to well. Dance away the demons, dance into relief.

May Haides, somber but not always impartial, lead you away from the incoming cars, and drop sweet nectar into your mouth. It is not yet your time.

May Persephone remind you that the greatest fall can lead you to the greatest heights. There is something honourable about walking out of rock bottom with your head held high, or walking on through like you own the place.

May Hestia keep you warm when your emotions are spent, leaving you numb and cold. May she bless you with a feeling of home whenever possible, and keep those hearth fires burning. And your own inner fire strong, as well.

a list of simple, single-word incantations. these spells can be cast merely by saying/thinking them with intent, or over a pink candle.

Salts - Magikal Properties

Whether it is black salt, sea salt, pink salt or just plain old. Salt has a long history of use in rituals, purification, blessings and magical protection. Salt is created and thrives in the Ocean  (or the Womb of the Goddess) It is the taste of Earth in the waters of life. salt is a amazing and versatile natural source for cleansing, and  is a must have for anyone.

Regular Sea Salt - sea salt is overall very common, easy to obtain and affordable. It can be bought in either course chunks or fine like sand. White salt is associated with purification, purity, protection and blessings.

Celtic Sea Salt- is a “moist” unrefined sea salt that is usually found on the coastal areas of France. It has a gorgeous light grey, almost light purple color; it is harvested from the clay found in salt flats. This salt has similar properties to regular sea salt however because it is a much more natural and pure salt its properties are enhanced especially protective and cleansing. It also tastes amazing and is filled with vital minerals, I also find that since it is moist it clumps together nicely making it easy to work with and shape.

Black Salt- black salt is as the title says black or very dark in color. It is commonly available at magic shops, and is also very easy to make. Not to be confused with black lava salt or kala namak salts used in fine cuisine.RITUAL BLACK SALT IS NOT FOR CONSUMPTION!!!. This salt is easily the most protective of the four as it is great at Nullifying or returning negative energy.

Himalayan Pink Salt- is a pure, hand mined salt that is from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains.  It is harvested from ancient sea salt deposits, it thought to be one of the highest quality and purest salts available. The salt ranges in hues from white to various shades of pink,  and even deep reds; this is the result of the salts high iron and mineralcontent. This salt has the most soothing and loving energizes of the salts and can be used for bringing about love.

If working with salt keep in mind that it is a natural dessicating agent meaning it sucks all the water so if your working with it outside and are sprinkling it on the ground it will kill your grass and destroy the surrounding soil making it inhabitable for plants and such.
