When we think about cultures and their concept of beauty, you see differences in different cultures compare to one another. The culture of West Africa doesn’t practice beauty for Beauty for Beauty sake like western cultures. It is a collective thing for the community. When I started looking at media in Bear culture, it was mostly white and very few men of color, including in Documentaries. It was all about the White guys and when you see works in the Bear community. You see Black men being fetishize or drawn with an over exaggerated Penis as well, which is very off putting to see. So, I became interested in making a version of these collectively for Black men and Non-Black people of Color which is in context beauty for beauty sake and aesthetics for aesthetics sake for these men who identify with Bear Culture. My work is personal in a way because they represent things I want to see in Artwork in the community with aesthetics that is pleasing for me and those who shared the same aesthetics and wants. The godlike statue of the characters is a way to show how I feel that men of color especially of a larger body size is valuable in beautiful, this is also for those who feel the same way collectively. It’s take on that Western concept of beauty for beauty sake, when it comes to religious images with that beauty for the collective in the African sense. My work is from imagination and real life.
