Just trying to get my thoughts in order about all of the implications about Tim’s past that last night’s episode revealed, and how it relates to other scenes in the show’s history.
Because holy crap, last night’s revelations were a dumpster fire. And while I’m still upset that he didn’t at least text Lucy to say he was alive, I’m starting to get it.
Tim was young when he was a squad leader in the army (to be fair most are, but still, as someone who is now older than he would have been, the pressure of the decisions he would have been making hits even harder). Based off of his being a 12 year LAPD vet when Lucy was a Rookie, he would have been max 26-27 when he was discharged. Which means he was probably even younger when everything happened.
So going over everything that was revealed last night— One of the men under Tim’s command stole nearly half a million dollars and went absent without leave. Obviously Tim didn’t report him (likely to protect his wife since all of Ray’s benefits would have been cut off), because Ray was able to order an airstrike on the location of his own squad, killing at least 2 of Tim’s men (again, there wasn’t even enough left of them to fill a shoebox) and likely severely injuring several others. And again Tim fudges the report, so that Ray’s ‘widow’ and daughter will get his death benefits (this is so Tim, but more on that later).
We already know Tim takes on so much blame, even when he doesn’t deserve it. Can you imagine how much guilt he’s shouldering over this?!
And that regret over his actions doesn’t even take into account what we also know about Mitch’s injury. Because I looked back over the transcripts from Casualties, and it definitely sounds like that was a separate incident (he specifically stated that he let Mitch slide on something he shouldn’t have. Not let something slide in general). So we have at least 2 incidents of Tim trying to show the men he was in charge of some compassion, and it resulted in severe injury or death of the people he was responsible for.
No wonder rules matter.
There’s also the revelation that Tim was dubbed the Reaper - aka the personification of death. We don’t have much background info on why that is, but I can definitely see him not wanting Lucy to know about that side of his past, especially with what Greer was implying (that he’d gone soft for not jumping on the chance to kill Ray).
But going back to the ways that all of the ties to past storylines. Remember when Tim reported Mac Daniels and Grey pointed out that he would lose his pension, and Beth specifically asked him how she was supposed to afford to raise their kids? Holy direct parallel. We thought it just related to the way Tim hid Isabel’s addiction, but now we see that the last time he skirted the lines, it got his men killed. And now the pain that Tim was in when Beth tore into him hits so much deeper.
Him trying to hide his tears when he helped Mitch find a job and a bed hits so much deeper.
Tim is absolutely reeling right now. He was barely holding back tears when he came to see Lucy. He needed her comfort even if he couldn’t bring himself to tell her what was going on— Not just to protect her career, but probably out of so much guilt too.
Lucy wasn’t wrong to turn him away. In fact I’m glad that she set boundaries, and I know she was actually hoping that giving him that ultimatum would make him just tell her.
But holy crap does it hurt understanding how much he needed her in that moment.
Both of our babies are in so much pain right now. And I’m really going to need them to at least start letting each other back in during next week's episode, as well as a healing arc for the remainder of season 6.
I’m begging.

I needed some early Chenford moments so I started to watch some episodes from the second half of season 1 yesterday.
It always blows my mind how much not only their relationship changed over the seasons but especially how much Tim changes and at the same time not changes. Basically the only thing he did was taking off his heavy armor. But it still has a huge effect.
Even in season 1 we see several times how much he cares for other people even when he puts on his tough guy demeanor.
He comforted Lucy after she got stung by that needle (did watch that episode this time but I remember it) and made sure she checked off all the stuff that she needed to move on further in the program.
Now I'm on episode 20 (Free Fall) and Tim just got coughed on with blood from that one guy. Before that you could already see the compassion in his eyes when he realized that the guy was probably infected but the armor stayed on (for obvious reasons). And then the guy coughed on him and you could see the moment of shock and realization. He seemed to be frozen for a moment but as soon as he realized that Lucy was moving toward him he sprung back into action and kept her from entering the room. I'm not sure many other people would have had quick thinking like that in a moment like this.
But I let myself be carried away. 😅 My point is: in later seasons it outwardly looks like Tim has changed a lot when in hindsight he was always that caring man he is now. He was just hiding behind a wall. But working with Lucy helped him to be more open.

Waiting | Tim Bradford | The Rookie
Part One | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four | Part Five | Part Six
True to his word, Tim held back and stayed in an unmarked vehicle down the street from the house that the cartel were using as a basis of their operation. It was the same one that Tim and (Y/N) had raided only three years prior. Even he could admit that it was almost poetic that it was on this property, three years ago, his and (Y/N)’s fate had been decided by Regina Diaz, and it would be here that their fate would be unsealed. It had come full circle, almost anyway: Tim was in no position for a premature celebration. So he and Chen watched and waited as they had been told to do.
“Tim…?” Lucy said, timid as she was when she had first become his rookie. “How are you?”
“I’m fine, boot.”
She pulled at her collar, trying to pick the right words. She knew that Tim could be prickly and defensive at the best of times, so today his guard would be up tenfold. However, she could also see right through the walls he worked so hard to keep up. “You know, it’s okay to be nervous. Considering how drastically things have changed these last few days.”
“Why would I be nervous? I trust (Y/N), she’s smart, she has survived this long.”
“Then why haven't you put your wedding band back on?”
Tim didn’t respond, instead he turned away from Lucy’s concerned looks and towards the house. The rest of the team assigned to the raid had not shown up yet, they weren’t scheduled to come until the primary watch team gave the command. The primary team were in a van on the opposite side of the street, parked only a hundred yards away from him and Chen. They were almost directly in front of the house, waiting to see if any form of action began before the police troops arrived.
If Tim had been in that van like he had wanted to have been, he would have seen a figure in a dark hoodie move around the side of the house and down the patch of grass that leads to the backyard. He would have flagged it up as suspicious, he would have recognised the hoodie as one of his own, the one that (Y/N) always stole from him. He would have noticed her entering the grounds.
“I didn’t-” Tim started, stopping when the words got stuck in his throat. He looked back to Chen who smiled softly, nodding her head to allow him to continue. “I didn’t put the ring back on because if this goes wrong today, I don’t think I would have the strength to take it off again.”
—--
As the sun began to go down, the radio in between Tim and Lucy finally sounded out with Harper’s voice as she gave the order for the operation to begin. Within seconds, police officers from multiple Wilshire divisions appeared, some on foot and others in their shops. Two SWAT teams approached shortly after. Their synchronised movements were something to gawk at as they silently fell into formation to breach the property. From where they had parked their car, Tim could see Lopez, West, and Nolan leading the front of the operation alongside Sargent Grey.
It didn’t take long for the signal to breach the property, when he heard the command go out of the radio, Tim held his breath for a second before closing his eyes. In all of his years on the force, or even before during his time serving in the Marine Corp, he had never felt so nervous, so out of control.
“Tim, you need to breathe, it’s going to be okay.” Lucy placed her hand on her Training Officer’s shoulder. His eyes snapped open. In that moment, Lucy saw something change in his eyes, the panic that encompassed him only a few moments prior had disappeared.
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes I do. You got the best cops in the city going in there right now. It will be okay, you have to trust that.”
“How can I? Last time we were here, we thought it was okay. Look what happened!”
“Tim, they will call us in when they have secured the place.”
Bradford turned to respond but was interrupted by the sound of bullets being shot. Instinctively, the two patrol officers reached for their weapons in case they needed to pursue anyone. Moments later, the radio rang out again. This time it was Lopez speaking. “I need multiple RA units to my location. We have casualties, three not conscious, not breathing; we also have one identified female, police detective, gunshot to shoulder, not wearing a vest. She is conscious and breathing.”
Before Angela had finished giving the report on the radio, Tim was out of the car, sprinting towards the house, gun still in hand. His mind was going a mile a minute, he knew that everybody who was a part of the bust today would have been wearing a bullet-proof vest. The only police personnel who would have been without one would have been (Y/N). She would not have had the resources to get one beforehand, she would have gone in without one.
Air got stuck in his throat as he breached the property line and burst through the front doors. He barely noticed Chen running behind him as he began to sweep the property for (Y/N). It did not take long for him to find her.
She was surrounded by multiple cops, some were searching for something that could aid her until the RA unit arrived, others stood back watching her from where she was crumpled to the ground. Tim barged his way through the crowd, falling to his knees at her side. He barely registered Angela next to him, holding some scrap material into (Y/N)’s shoulder to stop the bleeding.
His eyes darted all over her form, looking for more injuries. He didn’t notice anything major, except from a few scratches on her face. He then focuses on her shoulder, he couldn't see the wound under Angela’s hands but he saw how her blood had spread down her arm and soaked into her jacket and shirt.
He tentatively reached down to move the hair spread across her face, “Hey baby. It’s okay, I’ve got you. It’s going to be okay.” He tried to reassure her, but as the words spilled from his mouth he knew that his words were for him also, to remind himself that she was here, that she was real. He was not going to leave her side, not now, not ever.
(Y/N) slowly turned her head to face her husband as she heard his voice for the first time in two years. He looked older, the lines in his face had set in. The crease between his eyebrows had grown, but his eyes were the same. She never thought that she would see them again, she never thought that she would see Tim again at all.
“Tim…” (Y/N) tried to speak but her words were cut off by blood rising through her throat. She choked it back down again with a pained expression. Before she tried to speak again, her eyes rolled back into her head as she succumbed to unconsciousness.

Tim Bradford was known to be many things. Hardass, stickler for rules, vengeful, angry. Words like these had been tossed around tirelessly to describe him. If anyone met him today, they would think he was born stuck in his ways, a man destined to be encompassed by the negatives in life.
But, contrary to popular belief, he wasn't always like he is now. He wasn't like this when he still had his wife.

Alright, time for a new question: what are your favorite Tim Bradford quotes/lines of dialogue?
So this is actually insanely difficult, so thanks for that.
I've left this simmering in my mind for the last few days, and I've come up with a super random assortment—lines that make me laugh, lines that make me swoon, lines that are just so iconic...
I'm sure I could list out dozens of these, but here are the ones that came to mind (in no particular order)—
"What's a BTS?" (2x11) I don't know why, but this one just lives rent-free in my head. It's a much-needed moment of levity in a potentially very heavy scene, there's just something so adorable about it, and it's just a great portrayal of Tim's grumpy old man persona.
"You deserve someone who's worth the effort." (5x08) Pretty sure the scream I let out over this still echoes in my head.
"You're going into labor?" / "You text me '911' on my day off to ask me if a dress makes you look fat?" / "What are you doing? Sit back down." (3x10) I don't think there's a single thing I don't love about Tim in his Man of Honor era. And the way he just bursts in there assuming Angela's in labor is perfect.
"Tim Bradford finishes what he starts." (2x13) I-fucking-conic.
"Uh -- Eh -- First of all... I-I just, like -- Thank you. Um...you're... Look, Lucy, I'm -- I'm flattered. I am. You're a great girl. Woman. Woman. And I... Um... Crap." (3x09) The poor man was having an existential crisis, and his entire mess of a response is fantastic.
"You don't let anyone ever tell you you can't do something. Not even me." (3x09) This line!?!?!? Ughhhhhhh aelakglaekglaek
"I'm who I am in spite of you." (4x09) I couldn't find a gif of this specific line, but this one always destroys me. I'm so proud of him and so happy he got to say his piece to his father.
"Call me crazy, but it just doesn't feel like pretend." (5x01) This was such a moment for him, being vulnerable enough with her to give voice to what he's feeling...
"You know what? No—I don't have anything." (4x22) He's so adorably flustered and I just love this.
"You could never disappoint me." (6x03) I mean... do I even need to explain this???? *faints*
"You can choose to see that tattoo as your greatest failure. But I see it as proof that you're a survivor. It wasn't your day of death, Officer Chen. It was the first day, of the rest of your life. And no one can take that away from you." (2x12) So powerful, a forever fave.
"No!" (5x01) I live for how fucking obvious he is in this scene.
"The last time I gave you romantic advice, I-I pushed you towards Caleb, and... you almost died." (2x17) I'm obsessed with this scene, so I can't make a list of favourite lines without including it. The raw vulnerability is just fantastic.
"I am responsible for a life that is in jeopardy, and I will do whatever I have to to save her." (2x11) It's so good ahhh
"If you get dispatched to a loud party, make sure they know you're not the stripper." (4x05) This will never not be funny.
"I am unwilling to let fear make me do something I'll be ashamed of in the light of day." (1x15) This was great the first time, but knowing what we know now??? Yes.
I'm sure I've missed so many great ones, and so I reserve the right to amend this list at any time haha.
This was fun though!

Chenford + truth or dare with the gang 😁😁😁
"I'm not playing."
"Nobody asked you," Lucy pointed out, craning her neck so she could see him from her spot on the floor. Let Tim sulk up there in that ridiculously comfortable chair.
Lucy took in the others: Angela, mostly drunk; Wesley, entirely sober but very relaxed; Nyla and James, both sober and highly amused; John and Bailey, entirely wrapped up in one another and maybe both a little tipsy; all crowded into the Evers'-Lopez living room.
"I'm not playing either," Harper said. "I'll keep score."
"There's no score in truth or dare."
Harper shot Angela a look. "Go ahead and try to punish me for passing on a dare."
"Points are fine," James and Wesley said nearly simultaneously.
"One point for a truth and two points for a dare?" Lucy offered.
From behind and above her, Tim scoffed. "Football scoring would be better. Otherwise, what's the incentive to even take a dare at all when you know so many people are going to pass on either?"
"You're not even playing," Lucy bumped his knee with her shoulder. "But okay, fine. Seven points for a dare and 3 points for a truth. So... parameters?"
Angela went first. "Nothing illegal."
"Nothing extramarital," James offered.
"Nothing loud," Wesley pointed towards Jack's room.
"No sex, drugs or rock'n'roll. Got it." Lucy said with a nod.
Behind her, Tim snorted. "You're playing the lamest game of truth or dare ever."
"Again," Lucy said aggrieved, "you're not playing. What do you care?"
"How are you even going to dare each other to do anything? Everybody in this room is over 30, and you're not breaking any laws. And how is it a dare to get someone to kiss their spouse? Nothing remotely entertaining is about to happen."
"Truths can be entertaining."
"Not if Nyla and Tim aren't playing," Angela conceded. "Everyone else is an open book."
Bailey shifted her gaze away from John and over to Angela. "I'm not."
"You are to me," John said.
Lucy couldn't contain her eye roll and she noticed she wasn't the only one. "Yeah, yeah. Face it, I'm the only one in this room with secrets."
Tim laughed. And not a chuckle. He laughed hard enough that her frame shook from the single point of contact between his knee and her shoulder. She whipped her head around to look at him. "Why are you laughing?"
"How do you figure you've got secrets?"
"Bailey and John - together. Intimate sharing of life experiences. Harper and James, married. See above. Angela and Wesley, married, all up in each others business. And you, even though you're not playing, have been best friends with Angela for over a decade. She's like a secret-sniffing bloodhound."
"I'm the only one who hasn't been involved with anybody here in that way."
"You were totally sleeping with Nolan during your rookie year."
She turned all the way around to peer at him incredulously. "You knew?"
He faltered for only a moment, glancing at the rest of the room to see a single slightly guilty face and lot more very interested ones. He appeared to have spilled a secret. "Yeah. Sorry, I didn't realize it wasn't common knowledge," he said the last lowly, hoping she could tell that he really was sorry.
Lucy huffed. "Anyway, it doesn't matter because we were only together for like three months. And it wasn't very serious. I still have my secrets."
"Oh, please," Angela said, clearly still trying to recover from the unexpected effects of the truth-or-dare game that seemed to have started without much ceremony.
Lucy spun around again, to face Angela. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"She means I have your secrets."
"Just because I talk a lot doesn't mean I tell you everything, Bradford."
If she'd have bothered to look at him, she'd have seen the moment of hurt laced with confusion flash across his face. He covered well. "Anything you'd be willing to spill during the game, anyway."
Wesley sat up, leaning in towards the center of the room. "I think I just figured out how to make this game of definitely truth-or-truth interesting. Questions about a person have to be directed to someone else. Not necessarily their partner, but partners — or ex-partners, or work-partners — are fair game."
"No dares?" Tim confirmed.
"No dares," Angela, James, and Nyla all confirmed.
"That, I'll play." He shifted in his seat. "Questions about ex-spouses aren't allowed. And the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll rules still apply."
"Sounds like we've got ourselves a game here," John said.
"Who goes first?"
"You do." Tim nudged Lucy's shoulder with his knee and then tugged a strand of hair. "Make it good. And about somebody else," he threatened with another gentle tug and a smile in his voice.
