Which is true, really - they don’t even engage in small talk, only meet up to spend the night together before going their separate ways. Except as the weeks pass by, and the nights slowly become longer, stretching into days, perhaps Niall should consider that actually, he might be denying himself a shot at a real relationship. But then Shawn disappears.

“The rest?” Niall accepts the proffered headphones, a line forming between his eyebrows. “How many of these did you write music for?”

“Oh.” Shawn’s cheeks warm. “All of them?”

“You are shitting me.” Niall’s smile is equal parts amused and flattered.

“Don’t thank me yet,” Shawn warns. “You haven’t heard my work.”

When a producer hands Shawn a randomly selected folder full of song lyrics, he inadvertently connects the composer with his creative soulmate. But Niall Horan proves to be so much more than that. And Shawn is terrified that his growing feelings will sabotage the partnership that could make both of their careers – and also end the deepest friendship he’s ever known.

An AU inspired by Niall Horan’s “San Francisco,” the movie Rocketman, and Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s real-life relationship (except more gay).

Niall Horan is a very good friend. He prides himself on his loyalty, on the fact that everyone he knows has no problem at all confiding in him and that even the shyest and quietest people are easily disarmed by him (take for example his best friend Zayn Malik, master of brooding and king of woe is me).

-Or the story about how Niall finds himself caught in the middle of Harry and Louis’ shenanigans that he almost fails to notice his relationship with Zayn turning into something different than what its been for years.

’Round every corner is another memory from their relationship. The bookstore where they’d met. The Italian bistro where they’d had their first date and then had returned each year on their anniversary. The farmer’s market they’d start most Saturdays with, casually browsing hand in hand. Mrs. Linden even still waves at him from her tomato stand every time she sees him run or walk by now, her enthusiasm never flagging despite his failure to step foot into the market for over three months now.

As he forces himself to smile as he waves back this morning, trying to pretend the aching in his chest is his lungs screaming for more oxygen rather than his heart longing for the life he’d had so recently and thought he’d keep forever, Niall thinks Louis and Harry might be right. 

He needs a new distraction. A proper one. 

He needs to try something different.

Someone different.

He wastes no time once stepping back into the flat, out of breath and eyes probably wild. “So,” he huffs, causing Louis and Harry to look up from the couch in unison. “What time we leaving tonight?”

A heartbroken Niall looking to distract himself comes across the most beautiful man he’s ever seen.

He’ll do.

“Woah, hey, easy there,” he says, and close up like this, Zayn can definitely recognize the little facial features that make Niall, Niall. Those perfectly blue eyes, those freckles, that mouth… but then there’s that beard, and that brown hair, and Zayn can’t believe it.

 “Niall…” Zayn says, shaking his head but holding eye contact. “When did you get, I mean, like, when did you start looking like that?” He doesn’t know how else to say it really.

 Niall quirks an eyebrow and then laughs, although he seems to realize the severity of Zayn’s statement before he’s done or something because it kind of cracks at the end. “Umm… Well, it was a gradual process, like everyone else I think.”

Rory allowed his eyes to follow Niall’s movements. He didn’t trust him a wink, especially when essentially being given free rein by the photographer.

“Catch me!” Niall cried before running up to Rory, jumping so his arms wound around Rory’s neck, and swinging his legs up.

“Fuck,” Rory cried, moving his legs to a squat and lifting his arms as he braced his body to take on Niall’s weight. When he landed in Rory’s arms, Rory had to correct his balance a bit and went a little wobbly, but was able to save them both from the floor.

“Damn, that’s hot,” Niall said with a wide smile.

Or the soulmates AU where Niall doesn’t know who his soulmate is, but Rory does, and the way Niall is determined to bend the rules makes things all that much more difficult.
