Before the month of May ends, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge Nurses Month. It is hard to believe that I graduated from my undergraduate nursing education program 20 years ago. Although, my nursing education journey was traditional, my nursing career trajectory hasn’t necessarily been conventional.⠀

The last decade of my nursing career has been quite tumultuous but there is no other job I could see my doing. This profession has afforded me the ability to serve in multiple roles and help my fellow mankind/womankind/humankind at their most profound life moments. While there are many festivities surrounding the Memorial Day Holiday, it is actually a day of mourning in which we remember our fallen military men and women who died in active combat. Thursday, March 11th, marked the one year anniversary of COVID-19 being the official designated as a global pandemic. Since that time, the number of colorectal cancer screenings being routinely performed has dropped drastically. Healthcare providers/entrepreneurs who provide primary care services are in a perfect position to remind and refer patients to gastrointestinal specialists for those who meet the colorectal screening criteria. Colorectal cancer has a successful remission rate but early detection is key. Try sending email reminders or even mailing letters to all patients in your healthcare organization ages 50 years and older. Also, do not forget about those patients under age 50 years but are at an increased risk for developing colorectal cancer. ⠀

February 22-28, 2021 is recognized as National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Mental health entrepreneurs/providers probably detect signs/symptoms of eating disorders along with other psychiatric co-morbidities more frequently than other healthcare professionals. However, all healthcare providers should be aware of the early eating disorder signs/symptoms regardless of their disciplines. ⠀

As a healthcare entrepreneurs/providers, we should ensure every member of our organization’s team can recognize the signs/symptoms of early signs/symptoms of eating disorders. Some brief screening tools that can be used in primary care clinics are the Eating Disorder Screen for Primary Care (ESP) and the SCOFF (Sick, Control, One, Fat, Food) Questionnaire. Both of these screening tools only contain five questions, so you can easily incorporate them into each patient encounter.

February is recognized as American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death among Americans. Due to the fear of being excessively exposed to COVID-19, many individuals avoided or delayed reporting to the emergency room for signs/symptoms of myocardial infarctions (MIs) and/or cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs) resulting in even more detrimental health outcomes. Remind the patients in your small-to-medium healthcare organizations about the importance of reporting to the hospital, if they exhibit early warning signs of MIs or CVAs to prevent morbidity or even mortality from cardiovascular disease. ⠀
