weakfish is a massive comfort character of mine and theres been so much animosity in the fandom surrounding them lately. i feel really unwelcome in hbhf fandom spaces just because i think theyre a good character. whats with all the weakfish hate all of a sudden
God..... some of you people. I recommend you rewatch the Awakening of Dread arc from season 4 as well as the Death of Innocence arc following it. Also, at LEAST the first three episodes of the Bones to Splinters arc, if your attention span is able to handle that. some of the asks we get here really make me think some of you have never actually watched the show and all you ever looked at were fancomics by the likes of fishyfriedd. Just the name alone makes me want to throw up....

how do yall feel about HBHF kinnies? not in the nouveau sort of "i relate to this character/their arc a lot! i kin them" way, but the "i am this character we are the same spiritual entity my kinship extends beyond mere relatability" you know, the OG meaning of kinning. My girlfriend kins Koi in this way and I want to know, A.) if this is something that is generally accepted in the HBHF community just so I know she won't get into any drama openly talking about being Koi, and B.) how i can best accommodate and validate her experiences yk. Maybe this isn't the place to ask this but idk man, I just wanna be a good partner
while I can understand rejecting humanity due to one's wordly burdens overwhelming them, i believe this is not the way to go about it. this "kinning" is also greatly frowned upon in the fandom. not only does it put everyone even remotely close to your girlfriend in danger, but it's sure to put her on multiple watchlists, if it hasn't already. if she really is Overwhelmed by her Burdens and Sins i recommend she seeks spiritual ascension rather than trying to become a creature so sinless and burdenless compared to her. other than that i recommend you both erase all traces of your existence, change your name and move to a remote location for at least ~5 years..... Hope this helps!

How do you people feel about keeping fish in captivity in real life not in the show? I think of the theory of fish being like they are in HBHF and I worry
I feel like this is a question with deep ethical implications. Is it ethical for us to keep any creature? What are exotic pets if not a symptom of human's innate desire to tame nature? For that matter, what is domestication if not a pathetic attempt to bring the wild world under our heel? Marine animals are far more intelligent creatures than many would lead you to believe. Octopi, in fact, are some of the most intelligent animals alive. And yet we keep them in glass boxes, as if they're just some toy. These are living creatures, not playthings. And really, how can we know whether a creature is more or less "sapient" than us? What is sapience if not a word made up to push the idea of humans as being superior? Is it not a cold comfort in the face of the wide, uncaring universe? Is the concept of "humans" not just another lie we made up to make ourselves feel like we're more than atoms drifting through space, made aware of themselves? Really, is any of this real? No, the universe operates on no mortal terms. We add labels to it to try and comprehend it, but ultimately, this is futile.
What I mean to say here is that what gives us the right to keep fish captive? What gives us the right to position ourselves as the superior species? Are we superior because we can use language? Because we can make intricate song? Because we have been given the power to question the universe around us? Why are those things ultimately more valuable in the face of eternity? Someday soon, humans will be gone, and all our ideas will have meant nothing to the universe.
No, I do not believe it is ethical to keep fish. 🗣️ Mod Tunny

ok wait wait wait but was there actually a taco bell sponsored episode or am i losing my gourd????? that might have been a dream please i need fucking closure
There was no full episode released, but there were leaks regarding HBHF themed Taco Bell menu items and Taco Bell being relevant for a few episodes of the show. I don't think anything officially released ever came of it, Taco Bell presumably ended the collaboration because of the whole banned media thing. One of the many unanswered questions we have about the production of HBHF, unfortunately.

The recurring motif of the unnamed sea snail is a metaphor for loneliness and I hate that this fandom never acknowledges that. It’s all “cute snail baby uwu!!” or “smol bean! i want to hold him!” he is LITERALLY isolation incarnate god y’all are so dense
I really like this ask! I do think the snail is woobified by the fandom, or at the very least fans tend to neglect what he represents. As we all know, or at least those of us with critical thinking skills know, HBHF leans really hard into a lot of existentialist, absurdist, and nihilist thought. I think that the snail in particular is often viewed through a really nihilistic standpoint, and I don't personally agree with that. Of course, in general I enjoy absurdist philosophy a lot, so my own biases are almost certainly a factor. I'll be discussing relatively surface-level absurdist philosophy here, as to keep this post relatively accessible (and for my own sake given that I was a chemistry major before I dropped out, so I'm not really an expert on philosophy by any means. Tunny, I believe it was you who majored in philosophy? Feel free to create more coherent points if you wish, haha); namely The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus, given that it is one of his most obviously absurdist pieces of writing. Sisyphus, a character originating from Greek Mythology, is condemned to roll a boulder up a mountain for all of eternity. Every time he brings it to the top of the hill, it simply rolls back down, and Sisyphus walks down the mountain and rolls it back up again. Camus compares this to the average modern life at time (1942), and it still holds up to this day. As Sisyphus rolls his boulder, mankind works aimlessly, often doing menial tasks, the same thing every single day. Camus states that "...one must imagine Sisyphus happy." and how could that be? How could one be happy, doing the exact same task over and over, endlessly, confined to his fate? Contentedness has to be found in the absurdity of it; he will do this futile, aimless task, over and over and over. There is no changing anything. Of course, there is no hope in that, no chance things will get better for him, nothing else. And when you have nothing to long for, no hope, you can find contentedness in that. That is the life of essentially every human on Earth; we wake up, go to work, we do the same thing we do every day at work, we go to bed, and the cycle repeats. Of course there is nuance in this; I don't exactly have a consistent schedule on account of running from the law. I don't do the same thing every day in the most literal sense, sure, but I sort of do. I still do tasks that will ultimately amount to nothing and only have the value that I have ascribed them, and the only resolution to anything will be death; and yet I find happiness in the absurdity. Now, to tie this to the sea snail. The sea snail doesn't do anything important in the show in terms of the plot; he doesn't talk to anyone, he doesn't interact with the world around him besides eating algae, he doesn't even have a name. No friends, no family, nothing to cling to and no hope of anything. He is alone, resigned to doing ultimately aimless things. Sure, he consumes algae, and one day he will be consumed by some predator; this benefits the ecosystem in which he resides, which ultimately benefits the whole planet. But none of that has any inherent value in the meaningless, godless universe in which we reside. As humans we place value on it, sure, but there is no intrinsic worth to you or I or Earth or the universe itself. It just is. And yet, the snail is content; the snail is, to some extent, happy. He embraces the absurdity, that all he does will one day be nullified by death, that none of what he does matters, that his fate is set in stone. He finds joy in his own life, even with the absolute knowledge that none of it has true value. His life and it's transience are a core part of who he is. It's remarkable how the writers of the show manage to convey that, even with the sea snail never speaking a word. He is loneliness, he is isolation, he lives with this knowledge, he embraces the absurd, and he is content.

you’re right about us being weaker as a collective if there are less of us. as a member of the h**f m***tia, i know how important it is for us to have strength in numbers. we’re fighting most major world governments, after all (iirc there are several billyheads seated in high positions in the french government). i still think it’s best to discuss blatantly bad takes, though. it’s important that the young children here learn how to think critically about the media they consume. perhaps i could find a way to be less aggressive about it (it’s hard because i have so many heated feelings about the topic), but i won’t censor myself just to satisfy the ignorance of some fans
is it like... morally okay to be attracted to an hbhf character? im having a dilemma, they have human intelligence but they are physically fish and i don’t know how to feel about this. is this a sin?
hillbilly handfishin' raises some very important questions about the nature of humanity. what makes a creature human? is it the physical form or the mind? if someone has been turned into an animal, are they still human? how human do you have to be to consent? how narrow is the constraint of being "human"? if there are beings higher than us (like gods), it can be assumed that they can understand the implications of sex and consent. i see no reason why them not being literally human would negate that. but if they're even more powerful than us, would they see us as able to consent? if we can't understand the nature of the universe like they can, would that make us like animals to them? if a god has sex with a human, is that unethical?
if we define "human" as simply a sentient creature with intelligence equal to or above that of a human, then i think we could reasonably say that both god and the characters from hillbilly handfishin' are human. if we define "human" as a homo sapien -- a bipedal creature with an atypically large brain -- then no, neither god nor the characters from hillbilly handfishin' are human. and here is a limitation of the english language -- we need a general term for sapient beings, or anything sentient and intelligent as a human. this is a term that could be vital to discussing consent, especially in the future, if we ever meet alien species. if an alien species is as intelligent as us but shaped entirely different, it would be a disservice to deny them the power to consent. as long as the adults of said species have the ability to conceptualize sex, i think it would not only be disrespectful, but downright dehumanizing to deny them the right to make an informed decision about whether or not to have sex with a human.
of course, the normal rules of consent would still apply. it is unethical to have sex with minors of this species (keep in mind that the age of maturity might be slightly younger or older than it is for humans). if said species has no ability to clearly communicate whether it would like to have sex or not, then it is unethical to assume one way or another. and of course, if the species doesn't demonstrate human-like intelligence -- signs of this would take the form of complex works of art, language or some other highly intricate form of communication, curiosity about the nature of the universe, and the ability to make sense of the natural world around them through science and art -- it is entirely unethical to have sex with them.
granted, it's worth noting that in the case of hillbilly handfishin', the characters are very physically similar to a real-world species that doesn't demonstrate any of said characteristics. this makes the question far murkier. there's a lot more i could discuss in regards to this, but this is already a long post, so i think i'll end it here. i'd suggest seeing whether you can contact some sort of philosopher who specializes in discussions such as this -- on the nature of humanity and how that impacts how we would interact with other intelligent lifeforms. you'll have to do deep soul-searching to determine how you feel about this. follow your own moral compass, listen to your heart, and you'll come to the conclusion that's best for you

Tunny I do agree that HBHF raises a lot of deep questions and is a genuine masterpiece but bashing those who are incapable of deeply analyzing it like you or me is counterproductive. Let these young whippersnappers enjoy this wonderful marine-based show. You don't know how many fellow HBHF fans I've seen abandon the fandom because of pretentious piss-pants like you. The less of us there are, the weaker we are as a collective.

i can’t fucking believe you. i’m not gatekeeping. i’m just making sure people understand and appreciate hbhf for the true masterpiece it is. if i see people saying blatantly stupid things, i’ll step in and try and explain the true artistry of the show. you’re just willing to ignore all the complexity of this show. being attracted to fish is wrong (god don’t let this series of posts revive the anglerfish discourse), but you have to admit that the show does raise deep questions about the nature of life and what it means to be human. if you blatantly deny that aspect of the plot, you’re deluding yourself. 🗣️  mod tunny
