Things they don't tell you about being a first time wheelchair user in highschool
Literally everyone will ask if you broke your leg(s). Everyone. Even people you don’t know. Theyll ask a lot and think you’re extremely fragile.
bruises show up within the first day of rolling around, and they can really suck
people will try to grab your chair if they think you’re struggling and it can be hard not to snap at them for it
static electricity is a huge issue. You will probably either continuously shock your leg when you’re rolling around or do what I did today and zap someone so hard as you pass that both of you nearly keel over
people will call you out as a faker if you do anything even remotely fun ever on your wheelchair. Wheelies? Obviously your legs are fine lol not like you have to go down fucking curbs /s
puddles are the worst and if there’s a curb with a puddle all around and you have some ability to walk its a better idea to just stand up and navigate the chair than to fall backwards into said puddle
weird looks from people are inevitable, especially from people who don’t like you
bus drivers will often push your chair and give you advise you don’t want to hear, even if you tell them nicely you can push yourself. Its really hard not to get mad at them for it
no wheelies in school. Though if you do it in the elevator when no one else is with you you can’t really get caught.
speaking of wheelies, always be ready to throw at least one arm behind you in case you fall. They say tuck your chin in but its easier and more reliable to throw your hands back and keep your neck up so you don’t hit the floor. Sore arms are way easier to put up with than head injuries
don’t even bother to try and roll back up curbs. You will either be there for an hour or fall backwards. I managed to do both.
90% of classrooms that aren’t special ed are not very wheelchair accessible.
people will automatically assume you’re faking something if you’re not considered dumb enough in their standards to fit in with disabled students (aka high class ableism at its finest)
people are going to give you weird looks if you don’t suddenly start sitting with the other disabled kids
standard backpacks usually dangle way too much to keep on you easily, so try to pack light
built in storage on wheelchairs cannot sufficiently carry books
don’t try to hold an umbrella. Period. Especially not with your teeth. It doesn’t work.
don’t try to give the bus driver your ticket while you’re stuck on the ramp. And speaking of, its easy to start falling down the bus ramp so be careful, and when in doubt throw on the breaks
and finally if you’re like me pray to god you don’t go nonverbal when someone is trying to push you and you don’t want them to because it is hard to get them to stop if you can’t speak
able-bodied people can and should 1000% reblog this, some of these things I’ve seen on tips about using a wheelchair but a lot of these weren’t things I’ve seen

Solarpunk isn’t utopian: some links
So I’ve seen posts popping up lately in the solarpunk tag that ask about dealing with, or just critique, the “perfection” of a solarpunk world. And we’ve had some really in-depth conversations about that as a community, but new people coming in don’t necessarily see that part.
So I wanted to share some links to posts that address some of those issues.
[solarpunkandstainedglass] I want to move away from calling Solarpunk utopian …
“You’re doing solarpunk all wrong” – an extensive rebuttal
A solarpunk fashion timeline
Ideas for how to write solarpunk conflict
[permapunk] “Punk”
Writing post-solarpunk utopia
the Solarpunk Brainstorming open google doc
@madamedevideoland @faekin-it @youarenotthewalrus just some people I’ve seen recently asking these kinds of questions.

In most of life, changing tasks is inefficient. In studying, it’s often the efficient approach.

This post contains condensed notes made from Marty Lobdell’s 1 hour long lecture (link’s here), which features many effective study techniques and tips.
1. TAKE BREAKS.
25-30 min of studying, followed by 5 min break (a.k.a. pomodoro technique). Once you get used to the load of studying, you can increase your time of one study session, just follow this rule:
“The moment you start to slide, you’re shovelling against the tide, what you need to do is what? Take a break.”
2. REWARD YOURSELF AFTER EVERY STUDY SESSION.
”Things that are reinforced, we tend to do more of. Things that are punished or ignored, we tend to do less of.”
To put it simply, rewarding yourself after every study session will make you more likely to study later.
3. GET A STUDY ENVIRONMENT.
Everybody has special rooms for sleeping, food making, bathing, etc., but who has a room for studying?? Not many. Well, obviously, not everyone can afford one, but there’re some tricks, which will help you to create a study environment.
Get a study lamp. ONLY turn it on while studying. DO NOT use it for other purposes.
If you’re studying in a room, which has bed (bedrooms, dorm rooms…), turn your desk away from your bed to face a blank wall.
The context provided by environmental cues largely determines your behavior, so create a study environment, which encourages you to study. Distracting cues’ examples: bedroom - sleeping cues (bed), kitchen - food cues, living room - TV, radio, people, etc. All these distractions prevent you from studying!!
4. KNOW THE CONCEPTS, NOT THE FACTS.
For example, it is like knowing the words of a song but not knowing what a song is about. FACTS = song lyrics, CONCEPT = song meaning. Facts can easily be looked up if needed.
5. NO HIGHLIGHTING.
Or at least no highlighting after reading a text once.
6. TAKE NOTES.
Take notes during your class/lecture/etc.. After the class is finished, take out your notes the first free moment you’ve got and expand everything you’ve written. Give it some depth. If you do that like 2 (or more) hours after the class, you will have forgotten much of what you had written. So do this as soon as possible.
7. TEACH. TALK OUT LOUD.
One study showed that best way of studying is to do 80% of reciting and 20% of reading. So, teach others what you’ve learnt or dialogue with empty chairs if you have no one to teach. What you can teach, that you understand.
8. STUDY TEXTBOOKS USING SQ3R METHOD
Survey - go through an entire chapter, look at the pictures, graphs, questions… Question - While surveying, you might get some questions. If not, then ask yourself questions like: “What’s this?”, “What does this graph mean?”, etc. This will cause you to look for answers and “if you intend to find something, you find it.” Read - (20% of time) Recite - (80% of time) Review - after some time has passed.
9. USE STUDY GROUPS.
Study groups are not only good for finding someone to teach (#7), but also great for reviewing the learnt material (#8) - discussions with your study buddies might provide you with different perspective and insight. Also, study group members can point out your mistakes that you haven’t noticed! Moreover, they can help to create a study environment, too (#3)! When you see other people studying, you get more motivated to study yourself.
10. USE MNEMONICS FOR FACT MEMORIZATION.
Because sometimes concept learning is not enough. :( Make acronyms, coined sayings, or interacting image associations to help yourself remember the facts. The weirder, the better.

HELP i'm running out of motivation to study.... I literally did nothing for the past 2 weeks of the june hols omg die :"( how do u stay motivated
okay this is the second time i’m typing this out because i was like “pffff never mind i’ll just type it on the answer space below cause what are the chances that i’d be an idiot and accidentally delete it” and guess what, i accidentally pressed backspace AS I WAS FINISHING THE POST AND NOW EVERYTHING IS GONE KMN
also a little note excuse my extra banner/header thing i just felt i was cool enough to make one
back to answering your question —
i. identify the problem you’re facing
is it because you’ve so much to do and you don’t know where to start (aka me), or you have no reason to continue studying, or maybe you’re burnt out? whatever it is, it’s important to figure out why you’re running out of motivation in order to stop procrastinating and find a solution.
ii. now that you’ve somewhat identified the problem, what next?
if you don’t know where to start, you might wanna start by taking a piece of paper or a page from your planner/bujo and list down all your homework, followed by revision that you need to complete (eg. finish history notes, or finish math tys) and lastly, any other commitments/housework (eg. clean out wardrobe, dust shelves, pack luggage). this gives you a pretty clear idea of what you need to get done, and cause you to freak out because there’s so much to do, and potentially convince you into being productive – here’s a useful way of sorting your schedule out
if you have no reason to continue studying, or you’re just damn sian (or tired, in english) of studying, google your dream school (college, university, jc, poly, whatever) or dream job (??) and have a lil scroll through their website, and tell yourself that you are studying to earn your place in that school and that you’re studying to one day, get that job and save lives, fight for someone’s freedom whatnot idk. if all else fails, print out a damn picture of your dream school/job and stick it infront of your desk to motivate you! or have a little scroll through instagram tags (eg. for singaporeans, #whyhc #whyac #whysji) and admire their cool uniform and all (aka me @ sji sobssss). lastly, print out some cool motivational quotes (some examples mentioned in kou’s motivational masterpost – might wna check it out and give kou some love because she deserves it)
if you’re burnt out, take some time off and appreciate the beauty that’s in life itself!
signs that you’re burnt out (+how to prevent it)
motivational TED talks
self-care tips
this cute lil thing that everyone needs to have it on their dash
@yolandastudies‘s 30 days of encouragement
iii. and as you all know, i’m not good at giving advice, but others are, so here are some cool masterposts that might help!
@studyign has many helpful masterposts: how to be productive // stress relief // motivation
@asazora has a rad motivational masterpost
@studylou has various masterposts: how to start studying // how to be less prickly when stressed
hope this kinda helped! i’m deffo not the best at giving advice + i’m not the most motivated person around here but if you have any other questions or you just wna rant, my ask box is always open! have a productive holiday (or, what’s left of it) (*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑

22.04.16 Friends and I originally made “The Friday Club” to do coursework in and now all of that’s done its continued but has turned into a group revision session.
This week we covered some of the themes of ‘Of Mice and Men’ but with lots of giggling intermissions.

The astro-fashion-loving Internet collectively gasped when ESA’s Hubble twitter account posted three gorgeous gowns, by Czech designer Jirina Tauchmanova with only credit “Photo: Vasek”, which google thinks is a Canadian tennis player. For four long days I couldn’t find anymore images, until, today! Which is why I’m sharing a belated #FashionFriday and #StarrySunday combo.
These gown were shown at Serbia Fashion Week back in December 2015 as Jirina Tauchmanova‘s Spring/Summer 2016 collection – I hope that means they will be available for purchase soon!
I think I recognize at least two of the images, NGC 602 & 30 Doradus, but I’m going to have to see these in person to be sure, yes, definitely, and probably try them on, too.

Teaser letters , in Danish gækkebreve, is a Danish Easter tradition. The letters are made from paper with riddles, where the receiver needs to guess the sender´s name. If he doesn’t guess the sender after three guesses, the receiver owes the sender an Easter egg - and the other way around if the receiver guesses the name of the sender. Well apparently, Danes like to tease.

New Year´s Eve Tradition
A Danish tradition is to watch “Dinner for One”, a short movie film, before clock strikes A New Year. To make sure people obey, TV channel DR broadcasts this short film that actually aired in 1963! So obviously this comedy became the most frequently repeated TV programme ever.
And some of us complain that we cannot watch a movie twice O_O
