I’m thinking about how it’s often common for people who have gotten out of toxic or abusive relationships to be able to identify red flag behaviours that may have seemed innocuous at the time now that they have distance from that relationship and how phoenix wouldn’t have been able to do that with dahlia (iris)

for years phoenix is forced to accept the idea that dahlia hawthorne, a woman who he dated for almost a year and head over heels for was actually just using him, deeply hated him, and that she ultimately tried to kill him. and yet when he looks back at his own memory for any clues about her true nature, any signs he might have missed, all he finds are moments where she loves him so genuinely and completely without even a hint of insincerity.

the best thing he has are all the times he asked for the necklace back but even then her reaction is always just… embarrassment. maybe there’s a hint of sadness or anxiety he was too carefree to pick up on before but never anything akin to annoyance or malice.

for 6 years he’s forced to accept truths that a) dahlia hawthorne wanted him dead and b) that there were no signs that he, now a lawyer can pick up on that indicated that reality.

it speaks to his resilience because it’s literally part of his job to trust people and yet he went through a traumatic event that taught him that people can just completely change one day without warning. or not even that, that they can hide their true selves from him entirely without letting even the smallest crack in the mask show.

the reveal it was iris he was dating the whole time and not dahlia is a little bittersweet, sure, because he now has to unpack that trauma all over again from a totally different perspective but I also imagine it must’ve been such a relief, too.

the perception he had of this person was real. he still remembers her loving him because she did. he’s not crazy.
