The Darkest Minds Movie

I am currently finishing up reading The Darkest Minds trilogy for the first time, but I can already tell that it is going to be one of my favorites if not my overall favorite for a long time.

Anyway, I watched the movie the day it was released into theaters and I must say that I wasn’t disappointed. I really liked the movie, even though there are things that I wish they didn’t change--which I will get to in a minute--I overall really enjoyed this movie.

Now onto the review (there will be spoilers):

Things I Wished they Didn’t Change:

Sam. I wish we got to see more of her or that she was actually named in the movie. Ruby erasing herself from Sam’s mind was a big reason why Ruby was so terrified of her power and why she was so cautious when it came to touching other people.

Jack. He wasn’t even a character in the movie, but his character was a plot point in the books. It changed the end of the movie not having his character part of the movie. I mean, Chubs is supposed to get shot by Jack’s father and that’s how they end up separated.

Chubs. He burned instead of shot. As mentioned above, Chubs wasn’t supposed to be shot, but he got burned instead. Which I mean still leads to Ruby summoning the League, but still...I guess it really isn’t that big of a deal.

Zu was a little girl terrified of her powers, but in the movie she wasn’t that scared of her powers and repeatedly just took off her gloves and did her thing.

Zu also was supposed to leave the camp before the attack on the camp, with her cousin who didn’t even exist in the movie.

Olivia didn’t exist either, but she is important in the story, especially in Never Fade.

Liam wasn’t southern and he didn’t was darlin’ once and I was really looking forward to it, and just ahh. I wanted southern Liam. And his flannels and his leather jacket.

Ruby and Liam’s relationship also seems pretty rushed and there were scenes that were left out that moved along the relationship and they also were at different points in the relationship in the book than the movie. I’m not really sure how to describe it.

They brought in reds, but they weren’t supposed to be introduced at all, and that was a big point in the book.

Zu and Ruby didn’t exactly have their girl bonding “shopping” trip that they had at the Walmart, it was all of them in a mall. And Zu never got her pink gloves.

Rob didn’t actually get the two kids out in the movie. He just shot them in the camp. But that whole thing wasn’t very clear in the movie in general.

Ruby and Liam don’t sing “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” in the movie and just ahh, I loved that scene in the books.

Chubs is a green in the movie, not blue, but him being blue is important in the books and just meow.

How they got the clue for the location of East River was changed as well as how it was solved. Ruby discovering the clue was a very important bonding scene between her and Chubs, but they have Chubs solve it in the movie.

Ruby seemed to have at least some control of her power in the movie, which doesn’t happen until she is training with Clancy at East River, but in the movie she seems to have decent control over them in the very beginning. In fact, she is able to use them without touching people really when she isn’t able to do until the middle-ish of Never Fade.

Martin isn’t a character in the movie.

Black Betty becomes Blue Betty.

Overall, the movie seemed short to me I guess, but I still loved it. Even if it may not sound like it.

Things that The Movie Kept from the Book:

The Sock Scene. It makes my heart so happy.

The Amazing Story of Ruby and Liam that Liam tells Ruby at the end before she erased his memories of her and just ahh. My heart was crying.

Clancy being the creep he is and kissing Ruby without her consent and everything.

The general plot was the same

Cate was still a nice person, which I loved.

Chubs and his sarcasm and smarts and he was just such a smartass and I just love Chubs.

Lady Jane and the scene where the rest of the Black Betty crew finds out that Ruby is an orange. Though they didn’t keep Lady Jane’s accent, which I wish they did.

The scene where Chubs and Liam are talking about ditching Black Betty and Ruby over hears and thinks they are talking about her and just eep.

I feel like there is more I am forgetting, but eh, those were the first things that came to mind.

Now, I’ve seen a lot of people say that they wish that Ruby wasn’t played by Amandla Stenberg in the movie because she isn’t how Ruby is described in the book. Which I get, I do. I mean I was pissed when Annabeth wasn’t blonde in The Lightning Thief. Anyway, I personally enjoyed that Ruby was played by Amandla, I loved all of the POCs in the movie.

I was just so happy with this movie overall and I laughed and my heart cried with joy and sorrow throughout the movie. and my friend even cried because he hadn’t read the books like my best friend and I did and just ahh. I really, REALLY hope they make Never Fade and In the Afterlight into movies too.

Children of Blood and Bone got better as it went on in my opinion

@rhysandbuttercup one of my best friends hates Aelin, absolutely despises her. She loves Celaena, but can’t stand Aelin. She thinks Aelin is snobbish and just a terrible person because of what she does. She also really loves Chaol and agrees with him when he called her a monster in QoS. I can understand things, but at the same time, I would do the samethinh as Aelin if I had to. Probably not very well, but I’d protect those I love, no matter the cost to me. And the funny thing is, I can also see a lot of my friend in Aelin. The whole confidence thing and everything and really stubborn. I haven’t mentioned it to her because it won’t change her mind at all, but she just keeps talking really badly about Aelin, and Aelin is one of my favorite characters EVER and so I just avoid trying to talk to her about the series. I love her, but she keeps insulting my babies.

The real problem people have with Aelin’s attitude throughout TOG (imho) is the fact that she owns what she is. She’s smart and strategic and carries a lot of burdens and is beautiful, and she never tries to diminish herself or act like she is less, in order to make other people feel better about themselves. And that’s what people don’t like to see.

We don’t want to see a pretty girl who knows she is pretty.

We don’t want to see a smart girl who knows she is smart.

Those things bother people. And honestly, why. Why do we want people to feel like shit about themselves. Or at the very least, why is it that others need to be the ones to validate us and say “why yes, indeed, you are actually smart, you may think that of yourself now”. That’s so effed.

In conclusion, anyone who would want to put someone else down (real or fictional) for recognizing their own strength and not minimizing it or downplaying it, can screw right off.

(And sure you can have other reasons for disliking her, whatever, but a character having confidence in themselves should not be a reason to dislike them. Especially when that can spill over into the real world and suddenly we are shaming real women for feeling good about themselves, for whatever reason.)

Choir Final

So, for my choir final, my teacher had us choose one of our favorite artists to create a slide show about and sing one of their songs. Me being me, I listen to so many bands that I couldn’t choose. I ended up making like six presentations because I kept changing my mind. First, I did 5 Seconds of Summer, then I did All Time Low, then Pierce the Veil with Sleeping with Sirens, then Black Veiled Brides. The last ones I made were both for Bring Me The Horizon. I made one, didn’t like it and so I redid it. I must be crazy right? Correct. Well the song I choose to sing was Drown just because I can relate to it so well and because I can’t scream. Well, long story short, I ended up murdering my voice still and my teacher even suggested I didn’t sing for a couple days because apparently I sounded like crap after singing because I could barely talk. They said I did amazing singing, but it would be a good ideas to go on vocal rest for a few days. So now, I’m not allowed to talk or sing. It’s so much fun, guys

Want to flesh-out that vague idea of a person who’s been bouncing around in your dome piece? 

Here! Have a handy checklist:

Name, age

Sex, gender, gender expression

Physical appearance; how the character feels about their physical appearance

Race, class, ethnicity

Childhood experience - family relationships, friends and key figures, lifestyle, education, activities and interests

Education level, intelligence level, military service (if applicable)

Attitudes and moral beliefs

Current relationships - parents, siblings, romantic partners, friends, children, etc.

Sex life; attitude and feelings about sex

Religious background and current religious beliefs

Occupation; relationship to boss and coworkers

Hobbies and non-work activities

Political views

Main aspects of personality - introvert vs. extrovert, pessimist vs. optimist, thinking vs. feeling, and the like

What are they proud of? Ashamed of?

State of health

Fears

Sense of humor

Core characteristic

Inherent contradiction - the most interesting characters are already in conflict with themselves

In addition to these twenty items, you can ask yourself loads of bizarre questions like, “What would you write on their tombstone?” and “How would they react to a Japanese game show?” but I find this checklist to be the best place to start building real, solid groundwork that leads to a firm character, rather than a list of “fun facts” of likes and dislikes.

Two final items to consider:

What is the best thing that could happen to this character that could turn out to be the worst?

What is the worst thing that could happen to this character that could turn out to be the best? 

These bits and bobs should help you on your way. Remember: you can never know too much about your character.

While you period can somethings not be regular when first get it, ut also can be. Mine was and mine happened when I was nine with cramps that were super painful.

And discharge is normal

Shit No One Told Me About My Period

I knew the basics before I got it, but I had no clue…

* The blood wouldn’t necessarily be red. When I first got my period, I spent a few min looking at my underwear wondering how I shit myself. I didn’t know the blood could look brown, or be thick.

* That tampons weren’t a good idea yet. I was 10 or 11 when I got my first period and physically smaller than an adult woman. My first attempt at inserting a tampon was very painful and unsuccessful. I wouldn’t use them until I was around 14 or so.

* That when you use pads the blood can get on your bottom and I’d have to occasionally clean off the toilet seat after using it.

* That getting your first period DOES NOT mean you’re fully developed and fully able to bear children. I could have technically gotten pregnant at that age, but I was still a child and pregnancy would have put my life in danger because I was still physically immature.

* That it wouldn’t be regular for another few years.

* That very painful cramping is NOT NORMAL once you reach your 20s and is cause for concern.

* That the blood and tissue you pass can look chunky or stringy and not like blood from a cut.

* That stress can halt your period for months BUT

* That doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant
