The sound of her laugh sent a chill down his spine for it was one he had heard before, though it had not been directed at him at the time but at Merlin. At Merlin who she had tried to take out of the picture, at Merlin who still lived. There was a bitterness there in that laugh and he felt every muscle in his body tense as he took a small, instinctive step backward.
Daegal tried with all his might to hold eye contact and at first, it was easy. At first, he dared not look away. Perhaps it was the distance between them that gave him that false sense of security despite knowing full well all that she was capable of. The moment she began her gradual advance, though, the boy found himself averting his gaze and stepping back some more.
"Gathering herbs, that's ... that's all."
“Kill you?” The priestess laughed bitterly. “My dear Daegal, there is no need to be afraid of me. We’re friends, are we not?”
The smirk on her face only grew the more amused she was with the young boy. She could sense the fear radiating from his body. It was ever present in his youthful eyes. There was no mistaking it—Daegal was terrified. And that would only make things easier for her.
She took a few steps closer, approaching him. Her head tilted, her green gaze boring into his own, and she crossed her arms. “So tell me, what is a young man like yourself doing out here all by yourself in the woods?”

"Trying to find my way back to Camelot," he admitted with an expression that seemed almost sheepish. "I got turned around somewhere back there."
"You did not disturb me." Freya replied as she looked at the stranger. "Where are you going?"

"More what I'm used to. I've never ... never spent so much time in a castle before in my entire life. It's a little bit scary."
“Well, even if you did stay with Merlin, it wouldn’t mean anything to me if I’m being completely honest. I don’t like him very much. Ah, I see. And how’s that going for you ? Better than at the castle ?”

Quickly shaking his head, Daegal's gaze slipped to the ground once more as he idly picked at the hem of his tunic. "No. No, I'm not." He looked back and gaze her a ghost of a smile that very well could have simply been her imagination with how little the boy sported the expression. "Just looking for somewhere to spend the night is all."
For a moment she had wondered if she had said something wrong, but soon shook it off when he told herthat he traveled around a lot and that he did not really stayed put anywhere. “—Kinda like me uncle. Are y’headed t’ anywhere in particular?”

"... ... No! I mean-- No, no, sire, I'm not certain. He's probably not, he's probably ... gathering herbs or ... ... or ..."
"The tavern? You’ve got to be kidding me—he just spent the entire day there yesterday! Are you sure that’s where he’s at? Because if he is…”

"But not to the tavern, right? S'what I've been told not to tell him when he looks for you."
“When Arthur isn’t bossing me around, well yes.”

"Two years ..." he heard himself murmur, his gaze slipping away fro her for a split second. He'd never considered, himself, how long he would be doing this for, but having lived a life like his, two years seemed like such an impossibly long time. "That's ... that's amazing. To have stay put for so long," he admitted, lips parting for a moment. "I've never been able to do that before now. Stay put, I mean." Deep down, Daegal did not doubt that Gaius truly was as kind as she claimed, but on the surface, he couldn't seem to help but take everything he heard with a grain of salt.
”About two years now,” she smiled, “and I’ve been working almost everyday. Unlike Merlin, I’m not anyone’s servant, so I could dedicate my time to learning all about healing,” she explained. Her smile turned softer as he mentioned being ‘intimidated’, and she shook her head. “Oh yes, he appears to be, but he is really one of the kindest men I’ve met.”

Are there any Pillars of the Earth roleplayers out there? I play Jack over on my multifandom rp forum and I’m always looking for canonmates! The four pictured above (Aliena, Ellen, Philip, and Tom) are my top choices, but I would honestly be SO happy to see literally anybody. I play Jack from the miniseries since I haven’t finished the book yet, but that’s not too huge of a deal. =P So if anybody’s interested, you should definitely check it out!

"Is that what you do? Disappear all the time?"
“It can be a lot to take in, but I know you’ll get used easily. —— Gaius is happy to get an apprentice who doesn’t disappear all the time.”

The boy's gaze slipped down for a moment in response to the light compliment as if he couldn't bring himself to take it. And he couldn't. Daegal's self worth was poor if at all existent, and yet, something as simple as somebody telling him that he had a nice name felt admittedly strange. In the end, though, he shook his head, blinking his gaze back to her face. "No. I travel. Don't really stay put anywhere."
"Daegal huh? Nice name." She meant it. “‘M Lou Ellen. An’, despite everythin’, I must say tha’ it’s still a pleasure t’ meet ya." Two of Lou’s best friends were reformed (were they really?) thieves so she could relate. Kinda. (Even though she completely sucked at stealing stuff!)
"Y’from ‘round these parts?" The question was phrased most innocently, and Lou didn’t mean any harm; she was merely…curious.

Daegal was young, but it was not simply his age that plagued him. He was inexperienced in so many things. He was used to a life where he was ignored, looked down up, and treated with cruelty. That was what made this new life he was trying to live in Camelot so strange, and even stranger was the fact that Merlin seemed to hold no grudges over what had happened.
Merlin's words sounded so genuine and Daegal wanted to believe that they were, but he had always had a fair bit of trouble accepting certain things as the truth. The past weighed down upon his shoulders with every passing moment.
"Even after what I did? He knows, doesn't he?"
Daegal was young – it showed on the way emotions played on his face, subtlety something he wouldn’t achieve for several years yet. Part of him had to fight not to roll his eyes, but Merlin couldn’t deny how easily fondness for the boy had crept up on him. Quickly he ruffled his hair, smiling wider than before – less guarded.
“—I’ll let you in on a secret. The eyebrow thing – most of the time he doesn’t even realise he’s doing it. Gaius likes you, Daegal. You have no reason to worry.”
After all, it was hard not to like him.

A small smile tugged at the corners of his lips, barely noticeable in the grand scheme of things. "Good to meet you, too, Kiara," he told her, but paused. "That sounds impressive. How long've you been working with him for?" There was a short pause and his gaze blinked to the ground beneath his feet. "He seems a little bit intimidating sometimes ..."
“Ah! Yes, he told me he was thinking of employing another one. Well, I suppose I’m not really a new apprentice anymore. Gaius has taught me a huge amount. In fact, I was thinking of leaving Camelot soon and travelling to another city where a physician is needed,” she smiled. “Nice to meet you Daegal!”

For a moment, Daegal simply watched her, studying her face as if attempting to recall when he may have seen her. So many times, though, he had found himself running through the lower town in order to reach Gaius in time for one reason or another. "I'm sorry," he finally told her with a small, reluctant smile. "I don't remember ..." And then, he managed to recall what few manners were buried beneath the surface. "But it is a pleasure to meet you, Lady Lozea."
“Why, yes, I do.” The girl nodded with a bounce of dark curls, wide smile lightening up her freckled face. “I have a very good memory. You ran right past me a few days ago as I came to visit Gaius. I was quite surprised, actually.” She pursed her lips. “I thought I had frightened you. Anyway— my name is Lozea, by the way.”

The boy's gaze slipped uncomfortably to the side as soft giggles burst from her lips and he found his fingers gripping at the soft, brown fabric of his cloak as if that might help him to feel slightly better about himself. She had a point, though, and at hearing that she would not tell a soul, he looked back, hesitating for a moment as if he weren't sure whether or not he should have believed her. "... Thankyou," he finally told her, exhaling quietly and looking that slightest bit relieved.
At his inquiry, despite it being inappropriate to laugh, she found herself incapable of withholding a soft giggle from bypassing her lips as she shook her head. “I’m not really in any place to tell anyone, darling.” That being said, she threw a wink at him and shrugged. “Besides, I’m a lot of things, but a rat isn’t one of them.”
