The box left in Laethelar’s delicately colour-coordinated home is a sore thumb through and through. A plain brown thing amidst pastels, violets and periwinkles and golds. It sits on the coffee table, a little note tucked into the twine holding it together, fragrant smells coming from inside.

Okay, so I couldn’t get home to stay, reads the note, but it’s a holiday and I still feel like I haven’t quite gotten to impress you with my cheese platter prowess just yet. So these are your instructions.

Step one: Do not open the box. Step two: Okay, now open it, but only the first part. Step three: Remove the wine, uncork and let it breathe. Bring down one of your good glasses, the ones without stems that look like boobs. Step four: Sit down. If you’re wearing pants, take them off. That can be your gift to me. Step five: Open the rest. Step six: Pour yourself some wine. Step seven: Miss me, but enjoy yourself anyway.

As probably predicted, the rest of the box was full to the brim with the supplies to make up a nice little cheese platter for one. Figs, grapes, crusty bread. There were three kinds of salami in small portions, six little chunks of cheese each with a tiny labeled flag poking out of it. He’d included a nice sanded redwood serving board and a tiny little fork for spearing olives with. It wasn’t quite the fifteen cheeses he’d promised, but it was a start.
