IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SHIVER'S GENDER IN SPLATOON 3

As I'm sure many of you have heard, the senior vice president of product development and publishing of Nintendo of America (not Nintendo as a whole) said that Shiver is female, not nonbinary. However, we have heard no such news from Nintendo as a whole, nor anyone else from NOA which is good. This might not seem relevant, but it is, because...

Nate Bihldorff, of all people, was the one who shared that Shiver is female.

While this may seem like a small detail, it absolutely is not.

Nate Bihldorff was involved in the censorship of Vivian from Paper Mario: A Thousand Year Door.

Vivian is canonically transfem/trans woman in Paper Mario. This is quite obvious from the Japanese version of the game. However, in the English localization, which Nate was a member of the North American localization team, Vivian's status as a queer woman was erased, and any implication she was trans, transfem, or genderqueer in any way was censored. (You can read about this just on her Wikipedia page, and there are many other sources on it as well.)

In general, it is a good rule of thumb to NOT take anything localization teams share as canon information, especially if that information doesn't exist in the original language or hasn't been shared from people who worked on the game in its original language.

Although we don't know anything about Nate Bihldorff's views or who he is as a person, this is incredibly crucial since he was already once involved in the censorship of a queer character, and potentially more, especially now with Shiver.

Please don't be discouraged, look to the original language and final release of the game to wait until we know about Shiver's gender! Even if Shiver isn't canonically nonbinary, you can always have headcanons!
