      he could do this alone. flickering memories or not, he knew enough about dorado to do a mission this simple. the omnic was nothing more than a glorified babysitter and that was almost more infuriating than the fact he was an omnic. the last thing he wanted to do was give zenyatta the idea that he would tolerate his company without complaint, even when there weren’t any other options. just grin and bear it, that was all he could do. maybe if he played nice this time, they would trust him on the next one and he wouldn’t have this problem again.

      “mate, you’re only here so roadie doesn’t pitch a fit about me going off on my own. and because they don’t much trust me to do this without a sitter, but that don’t make it much better. no matter how you cut it, you being here is a waste of time. you’re a monk, not a demo.”

      self-assured and arrogant, he only seemed to grow louder with every word. a stealthy man, he was not, but most of his work didn’t require anything but sheer force. (the damage to his eardrums after years of mishandling explosives didn’t help the matter, but he wasn’t about to believe anyone that tried to tell him that.) detonator shoved back into his belt, movements as haphazard and awkward as ever on mismatched limbs, whatever focus he’d managed to achieve was slipping fast. there was a reason he needed roadhog, and it wasn’t just the sheer muscle.

      at least he was focused enough to pluck his frag launcher off his back when he saw the guards, coming to a stop as he fumbled a clip from where it was hanging at his belt and jammed it into place. two guards, five bombs. easy. the only outlying factor was zentatta. 

      “look, i got this. stay here, alright? last thing i need is to have you hovering around while i’m tryna focus.”

  “ .. yes, but, i feel as though i could be more useful. junkrat, i-- ”

  something told the monk to look up again. there was no definable shape-- but zenyatta did see a red light coming from the top of the building-- at it seemed to be pointing right at jamie-- specifically, for the side of his head. a bit of panic rushed into the omnic, and he could only make a split second decision. he moved in front of junkrat, acting as the junker’s personal shield.

  “ sniper--!! look out! ”

  boom. the sound could be heard for miles. zenyatta found himself lying on the ground-- sparks emitting from his chest. a hole was to be seen, and one not to sneeze at. artificial pain ebbed through him, and he found it difficult to get up. but he would have to, for the sake of this mission, and for junkrat’s safety. 

  pushing himself upright, and actually using his legs for once-- he summoned an orb and shot at the sniper. he didn’t know if he hit his attacker, but the red light was gone. the omnic couldn’t tell if that was a good or bad sign.

  “ junkrat-- you must move quickly. they know we’re here. ”

 falling back down onto his knees, he kept an eye out for more snipers. the omnic was an easy target like this-- but what could he do? junkrat couldn’t care less about him, and he could barely move. might as well hope jamison has this under control, like he said.
