I am not really sure what I am doing here but I will try to utilize this e-space to some of its potential or at least post stuff about They Might Be Giants!

I lo e this guys girlfriend. I should get either her.
Photo of a setlist from the year 2000 or so, along with John Linnell's leftover water bottle that my then-girlfriend insisted on stealing from the stage.

Yeah. They stopped signing anything after shows about ten years ago. I waited around for almost an hour after a show in Boulder before I accepted this sad fact. But on the other hand, I have bought so many things from them in the past ten years that have come signed, so it's still a win. We just dont ever get to look our heroes in the eyes anymore and that is what the sad disconnect is.
Hey flans, if I lugged my copy of Book The Book on my road trip to the Virginia show, is there a chance of getting it signed? I'll look like the ghost of Jacob Marley carrying his sins around eternally but I'm willing to do it
JF: sorry to report that we need to keep our "bubble" kind of separate from the outside world. We don't let friends backstage anymore, and even the staff of the venues don't really come into the dressing rooms. We haven't been doing signings or giving stuff out at the end of the show. It's just trying to keep us less in the mix with covid.

Hello! Are there any lesser-known or independent bands that you're particularly passionate about at the moment?
I don't track bands careers that closely so what I might think of as lesser known might be the hottest band in the world. I discovered Mitski simply by wandering around Spotify and finding the title to one of her albums (Puberty 2) and a song (Me and My Husband) very curious. But she plays sold out shows at Radio City Music Hall-so who's lesser-known? But bands I like new and old, big or small-Radiator Hospital, Daisy the Great, Rev. Milton Brunson, Connie Converse, Compulsive Gamblers, Holly Golightly, Girlpool, Big Thief... but those were all folks I played a lot on my radio show.

I heard that the publicity photo of you guys singing into what appears to be lamps is why Flans wears glasses. Can any of you confirm this?
JF: I wear glasses because my eyes are bad, and have been for a long time, and in a lot different ways (astigmatisms and near-sightedness from birth, glaucoma starting in my 20s, cataracts from 20+ years of the glaucoma medication which led to lens replacement surgery, farsightedness after the surgery. As an eye doctor once muttered staring into the back of my retinal wall, "You've got the eyes of an 80 years old!")
For a band that has lived pretty quiet lives, there are a remarkable number of urban legends flying around there about this band. If it sounds like some far flung, unlikely BS, it probably is.

Hi Flans. I’ve noticed that over the past couple TMBG albums (especially on BOOK), your songwriting has oftentimes become a lot more metaphorical and bleak, sort of like how Linnell’s is. Has anything in particular driven that change? And how does it creatively stimulate you to write those sorts of songs? Like, when it comes to songs like Quit the Circus or Best Regrets, what’s your ideation process?
JF: Well those two are bleak for sure, but for me those songs are coming from completely different directions in terms of writing-Quit the Circus is based on a friends experience and Best Regrets is completely personal-although kind of hypothetical-I've never met up with the person in question (thank god). Best Regrets is definitely about dread in a very ultimate way-and I do feel a level of dread as an older person that feels heavier because there isn't a lot of skipping past it. Not trying to be a drag, but sometimes things don't work out!

Every night you dream that you talk to a genie, when you wake up you can't remember what you wished for. One morning you wake up with a giant crab pincer replacing your right arm. What do you do?
I throw myself in the pot of boiling water ne t to the bed and wake up as a full crab that can talk to genies and wishes to be a human again.
