Chapter 1 of My Hero Academia Fanfiction
The Irrational Entrance Exam...
Rule number one to be aware of, is that sleep is pointless when your an insomniac. Especially when your an insomniac of the Aizawa household...
The clock read 3:00am...crap.
Underground hero Shota Aizawa groaned at the sound of loud meowing and claws scratching at the closed bedroom door. His cat was a adorable little nuisance. Her little meows were getting louder signaling for him to get out of bed. A pair of dark half-lidded eyes shifted towards the closed door. With a slightly twitching right eye he growled softly in irritation as the meowing grew in volume to a shrill. He sighed and slowly shifted up onto his elbows with a grunt as his unkept shoulder length black hair hung partially in front of his right eye.
He moved it out of his face and stood up being carful not to wake the sleeping figure beside him. The woman shifted onto her back and groaned in her sleep.
"Go feed the cat Sho...I'll be up in a minute..."
Shota rolled his eyes and smiled softly as he kissed her forehead gently and left to feed their little terror. He opened the door and stared down at the black and grey stripped cat with lime green eyes. A happy meow came from the cat as she padded at Shota's bare feet with her fuzzy white paws that mimicked little socks.
"Hello Tsukiko..." he yawned, "huhhhh come on let's get you fed." He smirked and scratched behind her ears. "You little terror."
Tsukiko followed her sleepy owner towards the kitchen. After he fed the cat Shota made two cups of coffee. He smiled softly when he heard the yawning of the woman coming down the hall.
"Huhhhhh...good morning."
"Morning...here's the cure to no sleep. Our godly salvation." Shota mumbled sleepily as he handed her the cup of coffee. Akemi took the cup with a chuckled grin and held it close in both hands before taking a long sip. She sighed loudly. "Ohhhh thank the coffee gods for gifting us with this heavenly drink!"
Shota smirked into a chuckled laugh and kissed her cheek as he sat down on the slate grey couch and turned on the news. Those reporters were still showing the aftermath of that sludge villain All Might defeated. Shota rolled his eyes with a unamused scoff and quickly changed the channel as Akemi walked over. With the hooked barbs of her long hair she pulled open the curtains and allowed the morning twilight to filter into the room.
"Today's the practical entrance exam."
Shota scoffed as he grumbled under his breath. "It's more like an irrational joke for those without a psychical quirk."
Akemi rolled her eyes despite agreeing with the man. "I know, but sadly their potential is all up to the judges not us dear....well not until they are in our classes. Just don't go expelling another freshman class dear."
Shota turned off the tv with a huff of irritation since there was nothing on that was worth watching. "I make no guarantees. Hopefully my class won't be a complete waste of my time this year."
"Let me know if that sludge villain kid is in your class so I can prepare. From what I saw that day in the shadows, is that he needs a good attitude adjustment. That other boy however was very brave for rushing in like that. He acted like a hero whereas that other boy was just insulting him for trying to help. Despite not showing any signs of a quirk, that green haired boy was still incredibly foolish but you can't deny that it was also incredibly brave."
Shota merely hummed in thought before speaking. "Fully noted, and that can be debatable dear, it was irrational for that boy to even attempt what he did. He's just lucky he isn't dead. I'm more disappointed in the hero's for not thinking of a backup plan instead of waiting around like a bunch of confused children while a life was in danger. It's pathetic."
"I know. I was about to go help if All Might hadn't stepped in."
Shota smirked and arched a eyebrow. "Oh really...and how would you have helped my dear?"
Akemi scoffed and swatted his arm. "That villain is made of sludge and I would have been able to inject a little bit of my stingray toxins into the sludge. It mixes with blood and any type of substance into a paralytic cocktail."
"Imagine if you missed...the boy would have been in danger."
"I never miss!"
"That's irrational thinking my dear there's always someone out there that's faster than your hair. If he went after you though...I would've hated to get that call your pride would be wounded and I'd be having to stay at Mic's for a week."
Akemi rolled her eyes with a grumbled smirk but smiled softly as he kissed her cheek. Shota stood up with a grunt as he popped his back and headed towards their bedroom to dress into his hero outfit. He was stopped in his tracks by the hooks of his wife's hair ensnaring into the fabric of his black nightshirt. "I don't think so love, shower first then hero costume."
Shota gave her a lopsided grin from over his shoulder. Some mornings he's lucky to have her here to steer him out of his sleep deprived state in order to maintain the slightest appearance of having proper hygiene. Akemi released him and stood up as she walked over in her cool grey nightgown before kissing his lips softly. "I'll get breakfast ready. And I know it's not the start of classes yet, but please don't forget to eat lunch dear, those food pouches are not going to give you the proper nutrients that you need."
"I'm not going to starve Akemi and those pouches are always the next best thing, compared to your wonderful cooking, when I'm not able to take a lunch break."
Akemi rolled her eyes. "Just go shower."
A few hours later the pair were at the gates of U.A. Akemi was dressed in her cream colored kuncioki kimono she was also barefoot a choice she did willingly it was easier to climb and meant martial arts was easier. She was cradling a thermos of coffee in her hands as if it were her lifeline. She groaned about it being to early as she trudged up to the doors with Shota who had his hands inside of his pants pockets and grunted in agreement. His unkept black hair and grey capture scarf and all black outfit were his most noticeable features along with his half lidded eyes and five o'clock shadow.
The moment they opened the doors the pair were instantly bombarded by the welcoming committee aka the loudest hero of U.A. the one and only Present Mic. "AKEMI! SHOTA! THERE YOU GUYS ARE...JEEZ YOU BOTH LOOK LIKE THE UNDEAD—YIKES!!!!!!!! UHHHH AKEMI MIND LOWERING YOUR HAIR BLADES PLEASE!!!!!"
He was silenced by Akemi's barbed hair inching closer to him, pointing all around his body, at every angle, as her blood red eyes were glowing in her irritation. Her voice was a menacing hiss as her black painted fingernails dug into the thermos. "Mind lowering the volume you chatty Cockatoo! I'm not in the mood for this right now. My coffee buzz hasn't kicked in yet so please lower the octaves down a notch will ya?"
Hizashi Yamada aka Present Mic, the most unlikely best friend of Shota Aizawa, was currently the victim of Akemi's early morning anger. He should have remembered that she's a less than welcoming person when it comes to waking up in the early mornings when her coffee buzz hasn't kicked in. He gulped in fear and lowered the octaves of his voice as best he could.
"Uhhhh sorry about that my fierce lady listener, that was my bad."
Akemi groaned in agreement and her hair ceased its threatening display and fell gently behind her back as Shota held onto her waist. The tired man gave a witty smirk towards his loudmouth friend. "You should really remember Hizashi that she's not a morning person and is ten times worse than I am when it comes to your loud voice in the morning, especially with that hair of hers."
Akemi elbowed him in the ribs. As Hizashi spoke. "Oh come on Shota I was just happy to see you both out among the living for once. So you both excited for the exam. Brand new listeners with equally amazing quirks, it's going to be a good show and we've got front row seats!"
His grin widened as Akemi rolled her eyes and Shota grunted. "It's an irrational joke Hizashi, but I'm not the one who made the rules of this impractical exam so I can only hope that my class won't be a complete waste of my time."
"Oh your such a downer Eraser."
"That's my husband for you Hizashi he sees only the logic of the exams for what they are a irrational joke. That I can agree with."
"You two really are perfect for each other."
Akemi smirked as she playfully nudged Shota's side before speaking towards Hizashi. "Thank you."
Shota rolled his eyes and entered the conference room. Akemi was instantly greeted by Midnight but before the R-Rated hero could utter a single word Akemi spoke. "Not now Midnight...coffee hasn't kicked in yet."
Midnight pouted and returned to her seat. The living skeleton that was Toshinori Yagi was currently sitting beside Principal Nezu who looked way to excited about watching the exam. Shota was leaning against the back wall with his leg propped up against the wall and his arms crossed. After nodding towards Snipe Akemi headed towards her husband to join him against the wall as the exam got underway.
With her blood red eyes locked on the monitors Akemi watched as the different gates opened on the several screens signaling the start of the exam. Her blood red lips formed into a smile as all the kids started to run forward. It was quiet for a bit as they all watched the children battling it out, some were much stronger physically, but from what Akemi could tell there were some who were unable to compete properly due to their quirks. One purple haired boy that reminded her of a younger Shota was one of those few that sadly were unable to compete properly.
She could practically feel Shota's frown and she knew his right eye was twitching without even looking at him. She knew that it was pointless to comment on the practicality of the exam as much as they hated seeing wasted potential slipping through the cracks they would just have to suck it up and move on.
"Clearly the examinees have no idea how many villains are present or their locations, they have limited time to cover a vast area and hunt down every last target. Some use information gathering abilities to plan out strategies while other rely on speed to pull ahead of their peers. Of course remaining calm under pressure can be a huge advantage, as can pure power and combat ability. The most successful students use a combination of all these tactics, there the ones who rack up all the highest scores." Principle Nezu said and when Akemi looked over at him he was holding a cup of tea and he had a wide smile on his face that worried her ever so slightly.
"Mm, I'd say this years group looks promising." Midnight hummed.
"Well there's still plenty of time before its over, the real test is yet to come.. Lets see how they react..." Akemi smirked as of the judges said that white pressing a big red button on the control panel. She watched with amusement as a massive robot was unearthed in front of the groups of kids.
"So who took down the robot when you did this exam Akemi?" Toshinori asked, and Akemi smirked. "Me, Shota, along with Mic worked together."
"And I assume that as the Symbol of Peace you were the one to take it down your year Toshinori." She said with a hint of humor and he chuckled.
"Yep it was nothing but scrap metal!" He muttered amusement in his voice. Despite her husband's displeasure of the man Akemi did like Toshinori he is a good man.
Akemi turned back to screen and watched the green haired boy as he was knocked on his ass in front of the massive robot. "Now things get interesting, a person's true character is revealed when their faced with danger." Toshinori said loud enough for everyone else to hear. One girl got stuck under some rubble right in front of the robot and Shota felt Akemi gripping the sleeve of his hero outfit tightly in her hand hoping the boy would turn back to help her.
"There are no combat points rewarded for taking on the humongous villain.. But there is opportunity, a chance to shine. To show what your really made of!" Toshinori said in a voice that oozed pride as the boy jumped up, cracking the ground at his feet as he flew towards the robot. Akemi's mouth fell open as he destroyed the massive robot in one punch! That was power just what was that kid playing at he didn't appear to have a quirk in the sludge villain fight?!
She could hear Toshinori's prideful voice saying, "That's right, show who you are embody what it means to be a hero. Nothing is nobler than self-sacrifice!" Toshinori had a smile on his face as he watched the boy plummet back towards the ground next to the defeated robot.
Akemi had to bite her bottom lip as she watched the boys flailing limbs he looked like a rag dog. She then let out a little breath of relief the moment the gravity girl slapped him and cushioned his fall. She whispered towards Shota. "I feel like this job is going to be more stressful than we initially thought this year huh Sho."
"Mhmm..." She noticed Shota's hum of intrigue at the sight of the green haired boy. He was curious about this kid she could tell and that earned a small smirk to appear on Akemi's blood red lips.
"That's quite a collection of students. I'd expect this is going to make for an interesting year wouldn't you all agree?" Akemi said and she heard a few hums of agreement from the various teachers.
The rest of the teachers started discussing the various students while the judges counted up points and ordered the students properly. It only took about ten minutes tops before the scores were presented on the large screens.
"Wow the first place student didn't even have rescue points." Midnight pointed out.
"He took down those foux villains like an ace when most of the other examinees were running from the big obstacle, he stayed focused on letting the smaller targets get in close and then counter attacking, that kid is tough." Snipe added. Akemi rolled her eyes sure he was tough and had the tenacity to make a good hero but his attitude was the problem she could see it in his wild grin. He needed to be taken down a peg or two he's not a hotshot right out of the gate he has to earn his keep as a respectable hero.
"On the opposite end, the seventh place student had zero villain points." Midnight said and Akemi smiled as she remembered that kid from the sludge villain attack for a impractical quirk he had the spirit of a hero. He just needed better control...Toshinori seemed to take a liking to the boy...kindred spirit maybe she could see it in his grin.
"That's it for today, I will see you all in spring." The principle said, hopping down from his chair and wandering towards the door. The rest of the teachers followed suite. Shota turned to Akemi and nudged her shoulder giving a curt nod towards the door. With a smile on her face she hooked her arm within his and together the pair headed towards the main gates of the campus and down the backroads towards their favorite spot to unwind.
It was a small park seldom used only known by a select few. Akemi smiled as they sat underneath the old ash tree. She then rested her head on his shoulder and sighed. "This years going to be interesting dear."
"Mhmm...interesting..."
"That Midoriya surprised me...it looked he didn't have any understanding of how to properly control his quirk."
"He's like a four year old child if he's in my class he had better prepare himself."
"Will you ever go easy on them Sho?"
Shota turned and arched a brow. "Will you?"
"Now where's the fun in that Sho?!"
Shota smirked as he leaned back against the tree with his arms behind his head hoping for a few extra hours of rest before lunch. "Then I rest my case.
"Oh you..." Akemi smirked and kissed his cheek before resting her head against his shoulder, joining him in his little nap.
