World Wide Web Birthday Party concluding statement
The internet had a great day of celebrations for its 25th Birthday.
The party began with its technical issues, the issue of connecting to the internet. Through lack of connectivity the ustream video of the party kept stalling. Celebrating something that we rely on in our day to day lives in order to function became totally un functional and unreliable for the duration the party suggesting irony. Throughout the time of the party we began to invite virtual guests as well as our ustream viewers through free online chat sites. This gave us control over our guests but the anonymous nature of ustream allowed anyone to access without our knowing. Through these sites we held digital conversations both webcam and text conversations. This brought a change to the relationship of the ustream viewers as they were able to view the physical reality of the party virtually as well as within side this another form of virtual reality in projections of the users of the free online chat rooms. The actual party guests within the physical space became less interesting and less important both for the viewers as the piece became stronger virtually. Therefore we were performing a spectacle to the ustream and chat online users with the help of the actual party guests as curators. In conclusion the party existed primarily for the consumptions of the online viewers.
World Wide Web party for the World Wide Web and its users.
