To enhance the theme of this blog, let’s discuss an interesting article that delves into the widespread use of filters on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, discussing their impact on self-perception, body image, and beauty standards.
The writer, who appears to be part of the same generation that is actively engaged in using filters, examines the duality of messages that the current digital landscape presents: on one hand, there's a push for self-love and acceptance, while on the other, filters are extensively used to enhance and alter appearances to fit an idealized beauty standard.
Let's put on our thinking caps and brainstorm who the target audience could be? Well, according to me, this article seems to be aimed at young adults, particularly those who are active on social media platforms and engage with beauty, lifestyle, and self-image content. It's likely targeted towards individuals who are familiar with the culture of filters and have some awareness of the discourse surrounding self-esteem and body positivity on social media.
How do you think the message has been encoded? Well, it can be observed that it presents a nuanced exploration of the use of filters on social media. While not overtly critical of filters, it highlights their potential negative consequences on self-esteem and self-worth. It encourages readers to critically assess their own use of filters, question beauty standards, and appreciate authenticity. The tone is introspective and balanced, acknowledging both the allure of filters and the potential harm they can cause.
Every advertisement or article is based on certain values, right? Let's try to dive deep into the values attached to this article.
Authenticity: The article promotes the value of authenticity, suggesting that embracing one's unfiltered self is a healthier approach to self-image.
Self-Acceptance: The author discusses the juxtaposition of self-love messages and the use of filters, hinting at the importance of accepting oneself without needing to conform to artificial standards.
Body Positivity: The article touches upon body positivity by discussing how filters perpetuate unrealistic beauty standards and encourage individuals to appreciate their uniqueness.
Critical Thinking: The article encourages readers to critically evaluate their use of filters and the impact they may have on their self-perception.
In addition, the article might have been influenced by the growing discourse around body positivity, mental health, and the effects of social media on self-esteem. It reflects the broader trend of influencers and content creators discussing their personal experiences and addressing societal issues on these platforms.
In a nutshell, The article addresses a relevant and contemporary issue with a balanced perspective, shedding light on the dual nature of the messages conveyed through social media platforms. It urges readers to reflect on their own usage of filters, consider the potential consequences, and embrace authenticity. The target audience, tone, and values emphasized all contribute to a piece that encourages critical thinking about the digital culture of beauty enhancement.

Hey there, it’s been a while. How have you been? Ah, the usual question we throw around, right? And I'm willing to bet you've got a standard response prepared, isn’t it? In a world where "How are you" is tossed around without much thought, have you ever paused to consider the profound weight behind these seemingly simple words?
This is reflected in the advertisement put out by a Canada based organization, KGH Foundation, for a fundraising campaign.
youtube
The advertisement portrays a high-end urban locale, the air of a late evening surrounding it. We find a young man, seemingly in his prime, stepping out of a cab and strolling towards a bustling eatery. The place exudes a lively atmosphere, a vibrant cafe or perhaps a chic lounge. Notably, the setting is adorned with soft, dim lighting, masterfully enhancing the mood and ambiance. This artful play of light isn't mere happenstance, it's a deliberate effort by advertisers to sculpt an emotional journey for the viewers. These carefully chosen lights set the tone and ambiance, invoking feelings of enigma. It's fascinating how advertisers can use such techniques to play with our emotional responses. The interplay of shadows and darkness introduces an element of fascination, leaving the audience intrigued, eager to unravel what lies ahead.
The man enters the eatery, settling at a table where his companions eagerly await him. It appears as though they're old pals reuniting after an extended hiatus. And then it happens, those three words: "How have you been?"
The room seems to collectively hold its breath, sound effects amplifying the weight of the moment. With a vulnerable honesty, the young man's facade cracks, and tears stream down his cheeks as he opens up about his struggles. His voice trembles as he confesses to feeling ensnared in a realm of darkness, unable to recall the last time he experienced genuine happiness. The weight of being unheard and unseen becomes overwhelming, his words a poignant reminder of the hidden battles many face.
In a world seemingly connected by virtual threads, an undercurrent of loneliness courses through the veins of urban life. It's a puzzling paradox, isn’t it, that despite the digital bridges that spread across continents, the ache of loneliness still echoes within many hearts. The scene where, among friends clustered around the table, the man engages with only one serves as a sobering reflection. It prompts us to question the strength of our bonds – how many of those around us truly understand and support us during our darkest moments?
Abruptly, the man awakens from his reverie, recognizing that the scenario only unfolded in his mind, not in reality. In reality, he echoes a sentiment you and I are all too familiar with, replying, “Yeah, I am good. Things are good”.The contrast between his internal turmoil and his external facade paints a poignant picture of the masks we wear and the truths we conceal. It's a reminder that behind those seemingly effortless responses lies a universe of emotions we rarely share.
The message that the commercial intends to put forward is extremely relevant. Almost all of us, including you and me, pretend to be ‘good’ and ‘fine’ even in front of people we are familiar with. Mental health or psychological well being is not something that is discussed in a serious manner on a coffee table. Rather it is something that is a part of our everyday lives.
The advertisement immerses us in an urban landscape, where every character is adorned in refined attire. Not only their appearance but also their eloquence, choice of words, and the tone they adopt, all paint a picture of sophistication and education. It's as if they've walked out of a polished setting, leading us to infer that the ad's target audience leans towards the middle and upper-middle-class strata of society. These are families who are well-established and financially comfortable, making them likely candidates to engage in and support the fundraising campaign being presented.
However, this isn't your typical run-of-the-mill fundraising campaign. Rather, the organization behind it has ingeniously woven the campaign's message into the fabric of contemporary reality. By addressing the pressing concern of urban loneliness, the ad resonates with the experiences of its viewers. It doesn't just appeal to their charitable inclinations, but it strikes a chord that's deeply personal. This thoughtful encoding doesn't just draw attention; it beckons viewers to step forward and participate actively in the campaign's cause. The commercial was successful as it raised $1.7 million to fund local mental health supports.

Why this blog?
COVID-19, a little virus that managed to alter the course of history. It jolted economies, altered our daily lives, and compelled us to reconsider our values. In the midst of the chaos, it also provided us with the opportunity to recognize the worth of human connections and the importance of appreciating our lives.
As high school transitioned into the virtual realm, classes continued without a hitch, seemingly unaffected by the psychological toll it was taking on students. The relentless news of deaths, the abrupt shift to remote work, and the challenge of coexisting with both pets and infants at home created disruptions that inevitably seeped into our academic performance. I found myself a member of this student body, grappling with the same uncertainties.
Just like countless others, I had inhibitions about discussing my personal battle with pandemic induced anxiety despite having been raised in an open minded and supportive family. This encouraged me to reflect on this and I came to realize that there is a dire need toaddress this and make it an everyday conversation.
And so, 'Happily Homeward' was born—a podcast designed to be a safe haven.
In its initial episodes, I shared my personal journey during the pandemic and explored the coping mechanisms that helped me navigate these turbulent times. It struck me how deceptive the digital world could be; while we appeared "connected" through carefully curated social media feeds, the genuine connections emerged from unfiltered conversations and a willingness to be vulnerable.
I battled with the misconception that I was alone in my struggles—those mornings when getting out of bed felt like scaling a mountain and the days when motivation seemed like a distant memory. The polished facade of other people's lives, as presented on social media, only exacerbated this feeling of isolation. But in the throes of this journey, I discovered that my emotions were far from unique.
Thus, this blog becomes an extension of my mission. It offers a space where vulnerability is celebrated as strength, where authenticity reigns supreme, and where unfiltered conversations can flourish. The experience of launching 'Happily Homeward' reinforced the idea that our most authentic selves deserve to be shared, not hidden away. It taught me that the power of dialogue can bridge the gap between us, erasing the boundaries that a digitally connected world inadvertently erects.
In a time when physical distancing became the norm, it's ironic that we found ourselves craving true connections more than ever. As we navigate the post-pandemic world, let's remember that behind every social media post lies a story of struggle and triumph. Together, by embracing vulnerability, we can transform these stories into shared experiences that uplift, inspire, and remind us that we're never truly alone on this journey.
