One Day At A Time
One day at a time has been cancelled apparently and I have some huge issues with this for the following reasons:
1. Mental Health: As someone who suffers from PTSD (child abuse) the focus on the effects of it and the reality of mental illness is huge and should be continued to be discussed. PTSD is only really recognized by the public when it is coming from a veteran which isn’t always the case and although they do not associate PTSD with a civilian they do bring light to the harsh reality of it. My granddad (Vietnam Vet) suffers from PTSD and has since my mom was little. It’s a really big issue that has been brushed aside because men and women in the military should be stronger than that, but really no one is strong enough to see people being killed and some killing themselves everyday.
2. Sexuality: As someone who is Bisexual it obviously covers the topics of LGBT, non-binary, etc. and really helps straight and cis people understand the reality of these feelings.
3. Addiction: It is everywhere in the show between Schneider and Victor all the way to Abuelita’s hoarding! It really hits hard with the reality of addiction and how help is needed to get over it. They do a great job of showing the thought process behind addiction and even discuss the damages it does to loved ones - something some people don’t know about.
4. Father-Daughter relationships: I personally can say I really relate to Elena and Victors relationship because I do not really know my dad and he hardly knows me. He doesn’t know I’m Bi either and I even changed my last name to my moms maiden name to avoid associatation with him. Although they do get a little better because of Alex it’s not perfect and the episode we first meet Victor in where he brings the gifts really show cases the reality of some father-daughter relationships including my own. (Fun fact I’m turning 20 this year and my father still thinks I am 18 turning 19...)
5. Suicide: Although it is less discussed in the show we are informed Victor had suicidal tendencies after Afghanistan. This also ties in with PTSD, however is a separate issue because suicide is something ANYONE can be effected by. Penelope also shows in a few episodes how she wants everything to go away and how if it weren’t for her family she would have killed herself- a huge thing here. Someone who is suicidal needs family and friends to know they are needed... otherwise they don’t see an issue in leaving this world..
6. Gender Norms: So if you’ve even just watched ONE episode you’ll know that Elena is a huge feminist and in reality the good kind (yes there are bad kinds... hate me if you want for that comment) and she truly fights and brings attention to the real issues facing women of the world.
7. Religion: Again if you just watch ONE episode of the show you will know the family is Catholic and as someone who grew up Catholic I can say it’s pretty accurate! They discuss the change in the church towards the LGBT community in a few episodes most prominent in the episode where Elena starts the Allies club in school. We also see situations with nuns and others who are not too keen on the idea of sexuality or gender but who do eventually (some anyway) get over it and accept. SOMETHING ALL MY FELLOW RELIGIOUS PEOPLE NEED TO FIGURE OUT!
8 (and final). Guns: It’s a small part of the show but we do hear about guns and gun violence throughout the show. Penelope has a secret gun in their apartment and claims she is trained to use it but no one else is and people who say that are bad. A huge double standard. Abuelita even is caught with a gun for protection but it is eventually moved from the house. As someone who grew up in a town where everyone owns guns and my family HAD to hunt to eat because we were poor af, it kinda hits the middle of the issues with guns and without guns. Protection, ability, and overall responsibility.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk now BRING ONE DAY AT A TIME BACK!!
