Interface Final
I decided to go for more of a sleek look rather than a flashy one. Thankfully, I was able to put my physical application design to good use by utilizing it as my background.

Logo Physical Application Final
Although my original intention was to make this an outerwear garment (i.e. crewneck or a hoodie), I decided to go with an item that I felt was a bit more stripped and basic, so I decided to stick with printing my logo on a T-shirt. I am in love in with how my physical application has turned out, and I can’t wear for others to start wearing them!

Logo Final
This logo is used more for personal branding, and I hope to use this for a portfolio of various works of art and media, whether it be film or illustration. The glasses represent my appearance, the Korean letters represent my ethnic identity, and the colors are slightly reminiscent of the colors of the Korean flag.

Logo Draft 2
I reiterated on the the face logo and the logo that used shapes to form my initials because I felt that they were easier the iterate upon and because they were also most representative of who I am.

Logo Draft 1
These logos are for personal branding purposes. While some of these logos utilize my initials of my English name Joseph Lee, I also decided to utilize my Korean name Hanbin (한빈) because it is unique to me and who I am as a Korean.

Bad Design
Bad Design #1: This is a primary example of the problem with many Apple products: they focus more on the visuals than the actual practicality of their products. The ports of the Macbook Pro w/ Touch Bar model are incompatible with practically everything, so it’s not as flexible in terms of its efficiency. I had to buy a pair of USB adapters just to connect my mouse to this machine because these USB-C ports are too unique.
Bad Design #2: While many logo designs incorporate an element of connecting letters together to create one object, this is honestly just lazy, and it’s almost as if the designers of this logo expected the green color to make it more flashy than it actually is. Personally, I feel that because the word “Bank” is without a particularly interesting font and only “TD” is, the elements don’t seem to be in harmony.
Bad Design #3: To be honest, there isn’t anything particularly memorable about this logo, and the small triangle at the end of the word is barely making an impact although it seems clear that it attempts to.
Bad Design #4: The font of this establishment is lazy and basic.
Bad Design #5: This establishment attempts to be flashy by using a Papyrus-esque font, and the fact that they tried to use such a font to make the store stand out is somewhat pathetic, in my honest opinion. Although it’s not as bland as Bad Design #4, the fact that this store attempted to be eye-catching with this kind of cheap font is honestly just as deplorable.

Good & Bad Design
Good Design #1: This was perhaps the first time I have ever experienced an installation piece used as an advertisement for eyeglasses. What I liked about this design was that it implies a sense of “seeing the world through a new lens” by literally implementing a screen over the lens of this giant pair of glasses. The screen is actually projecting a video of people having a good time at what seems to be a party, which I thought was eye-catching and creative of this store. The filters applied to the video were an especially nice touch to the aesthetic value of the advertisement. Good Design #2: What I like about this drawing was that it was a depiction of Amy Winehouse with an Andy Warholian pop art style, which I thought was a perfect combination. Andy Warhol was most well-known for depicting icons in pop culture (such as Marilyn Monroe) in this kind of graphic style, and I felt that it was appropriate for Amy Winehouse, arguably one of the most iconic soul-singers in the past, to be raised to such a standard of recognition. Good Design #3: I simply passed by this drawing on the way from Kimmel to Le Poisson Rouge. It was just a simple chalk drawing made by this guy in a hoodie who was in another corner making another work. Mazes may seem cliché, but I liked how the artist was able to draw this big enough to lead the eye all over the work. I particularly liked the fluidity of this work paired with the sky blue color, almost giving off a soothing effect. It was especially calming considering how this was in the bright sunlight, so the light blue colors really stood out in comparison to the drab gray pavement.
Good Design #4: Justin’s “cow mug” immediately caught my attention. What I particularly found both witty and fascinating about this mug was how it took the step forward to incorporate the different parts of the cow to make the cup more efficient to use. Of course, using the udders to help the cup stand on its own may seem like an obvious choice, but there was clearly much more thought put into this design. The plastic tip at the end of the udders, for example, may seem like an effort to make this cup more startlingly realistic, but they also serve as a method of helping the mug stand on its own more smoothly so that the mug doesn’t slide off of a surface so easily.
Good Design #5: The proportions of this construction were almost too perfect for becoming a boombox, so I admired how the artist of this work was utilizing what was already there rather than forcing the construction to become a certain subject. The colors are especially dynamic, and the cartoonish way in which this piece was colored certainly gave off a rather laid-back, almost giddy vibe, which is appropriate considering how music is supposed to make us feel that way.

Assignment: Color
Image: Lianne La Havas “Blood” Album Cover
I am a huge fan of brighter, lighter colors, so this album cover immediately caught my attention.
The color palette used in this image helps certain visual elements stand out with one another. The pink background, for example, stands out with the green plants behind La Havas because pink is a light tint of red, a complementary color to green (a secondary color between yellow and blue). Furthermore, the orange (a secondary color between yellow and red) flowers that bloom within the green plants blend well with the pink background because orange and red are analogous colors. The colors themselves also give off a rather lively mood thanks to their relatively high saturation and brightness (high value).
In the foreground, Lianne La Havas, on the other hand, is wearing a dress colored in a dark shade of indigo, a tertiary color between purple and blue. While the relative value of the background (the pink and the plants) are similar in their lightness, Lianne is wearing an outfit of low value, commanding our attention to her because of the contrasting effect with the lighter background. This contrasting effect is also enhanced thanks to the gray (unsaturated) circle that is directly behind her head, giving greater emphasis to her face. Even the lettering seems to stand out more in the center of this image because of the contrast with the high value of the white and the lower value of the subject compared to the similar values of both the lettering and the background.

Assignment: Typeface
Typeface Family: Script Typeface Name: Just Lovely, 2017 Typeface Designer: Nicky Laatz
I like fonts that seem handwritten because it gives a more personal and unique flair to it. While regular fonts tend to lack personality, this handwritten font seems much more inviting and friendly, almost warm-hearted. Of course, the font is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but it is the subliminal effect that this handwritten style has that engages me more than other fonts.
