It’s weird. I lost that badly, but I don’t really feel frustrated about it.

Eichi: Well, you all did your best too, didn’t you? It wouldn’t have been strange if everything was over and done with a little quicker, but unexpectedly you were able to persevere until the very last moment.

Tsukasa: Tomoe-onii-sama was truly a thorn in our sides... I would have never thought that a “fish” would be armed.

Hiyori: Fufu. It might be simple to abandon your social standing, but the bounds of the world of the living won’t disappear so easily. That’s exactly why discrimination won’t ever disappear, either.

Whether it’s a convenient, carefully thought out form of amusement or the setting of a game, real-world problems aren’t able to just up and vanish.

Eichi: Mhm. You poked a hole in the fragile rules of our game. I’ll commend you for this much, Hiyori-kun, your unexpected cunning was operating at full capacity.

Hiyori: Not as much as yours was, Eichi-kun. Are you, perhaps, a demon of some sort?

Eichi: I’ll take that as a compliment.

Tori: .......

Eichi: Hm? What’s wrong, Tori? I mean, you were completely deceived, emotionally devastated, and then lost our game on top of that, so are you feeling a little down?

Have you become disillusioned with me?

Tori: No... the angelic Eichi-sama who shines so beautifully onstage, and the devilish Eichi-sama who tricks everyone and triumphs in the end...

I love both of them. I’ve been saying that from the very beginning, haven’t I?

Eichi: That’s true. When you thought I’d died, your tears were real. Even I cannot doubt that radiance.

Eichi: You really do care about someone like me.

Tori: Yeah. Even though it looks like you have a lot of trouble believing that.

So, just like you did this time, even if it’s just a little bit, I want you to tell me more about yourself. I want to know and love everything about my beloved Eichi-sama.

Don’t hide away anymore, or try to cover things up, or pretend to be anything different. Don’t show me the fake Eichi-sama that you want me to see, show me the real thing.

Tsukasa: Yes. I shall take to heart what I have learned from this lesson, Tenshouin-onii-sama. ♪

Now, then. While it has been very enjoyable to reminisce about last night’s game and chat like this, I’m sure that you all must have your own affairs to return to—

Tsukasa: So I would like to immediately partake in my “winner’s privilege.”

Tori: ? What are you talking about?

Eichi: Fufu. Since this is such a special occasion, I’ll let you in on another evil, no-good side of mine, Tori.

Kohaku: Pardon me for suddenly callin’ you out, Love-han. I have some time on my hands until my next job so I was feelin’ a bit bored.

Love-han, are ya really not busy?

Aira: It’s all good. Today’s work and lessons are over, and I was just thinking of heading back.

If anything, I’m happy that you called me out like this. I wanted to talk to you too ♪

Kohaku: It makes me happy as well to hear ya say so. Thank you, Love-han.

Aira: Ah, the always-popular window seat is open! Hooray, Kohakucchi ♪

Kohaku: Alrighty, then I’ll grab us some drinks and snacks.

At any rate, today you’re in a grand jolly mood. Did somethin’ good happen?

Aira: Ehehe, you can tell? Actually, an idol group I’ve supported since their debut was selected for a release event!

Kohaku: Release event, as in the event they do when they release a new CD for sale?

Aira: Yep yep. It’s an event we’re very familiar with, huh?

So about this group, a year ago they were only known to a few enthusiasts.

Like the photo in this cafe. This store has been trendin’ on the internet recently, so it’s not strange for Love-han to spend time here.

But I dunno. I jus’ feel like the vibe of this photo doesn’t suit Love-han.

It’s like I’ve seen this somewhere, or like some other idol took a picture like this before….

Aira: Anzu-san? Yep. I’ve collected everyone else’s Feature Live pamphlets, of course.

….“Could it be that you adopted the same vibe of other idols’ candid shots that you used as reference”?

Er, in that case, I’ll retake them….! These photos should convey my image, after all.

So. I want to talk about the messed up Griffin. I've touched on this in my long post on Ostania politics, but worth digging into this piece of... er, art (?) a bit more.

The whole sequence is very cute and very funny - because good lord, that definitely looks like something a 4 year old help make! (She is trying her best.) An for that to win a prize? Hilarious.

Except. Is it really hilarious?

As we learn in this episode/chapter, the Griffin is the heraldic animal of the Desmond family. It's traditionally associated with protection, power and authority - a fitting symbol then for Donovan Desmond, Chairman of the National Unity Party, former Prime Minister of Ostania.

Exactly. Former Prime Minister. We don't know exactly how or when, but Donovan is no longer in power. Once regal, his wings are now clipped. But reading between the lines here, there are obviously still many in the country who's eager to see him soar again.

This is a problem. Unless WISE is very, very wrong, Desmond may or may not be surreptitiously trying to start a new war. And while it's not made clear, he is more than likely the person in charge of 'the previous Ostania regime' that started Project Apple for military purposes. He is, from a very objective point of view, not someone who would lead the Ostania to a bright future, not someone who can help the country heal from war.

That is, unless you believe that bright future means making Ostania great again via war. Oh. So what the terrorists were trying to do during the Doggy Crisis Arc? Hmmm.

There are more people sympathetic to nationalist fantasies in Ostania than we are led to believe. It is a powder keg. Twilight is right, peace is a facade...

What's really distressing in this scene is this - and the anime really twists the knife here, the panel is not like this in the manga. Henderson mentions how the judges were moved to tears seeing "the corpse of the innocent baby griffin" next to the adult one, doubtless because it makes them think of loss and sacrifice in war.

Except. Endo is not subtle about who the innocent baby griffin is here. And the anime makes sure to shout it at us too. Damian, Damian Desmond, son of the Chairman of the National Unity Party, son of the former Prime Minister of Ostania, the boy who is trying his hardest to not besmirch his family name, the boy who thinks he must go into politics because he is A Desmond... he and his innocence will be the sacrifice to make the Griffin fly again.

This will hurt.

Do you have a favorite character in sxf?🤔

I love them all but of the main cast, I definitely write the most about Twilight, and for some reason, Yuri. I know, I’m surprised about liking the weird little dude too 😅

As for side characters - I am growing increasingly attached to Norman Normalson and Ave Rage because they seem to be two very serious people having to put up with very unserious people. It is good comedy. Martha falls into this category too.

And for one-offs - I like Olka Gretcher and Billy Squire. In some ways their function within the narrative is similar… but I guess most of the arcs in SxF are variations on the same theme.

Honestly, the characters in SxF are mostly very, very effective and interesting. You can throw any two people of the main and secondary cast in a room and you’ll get a good story and/or interesting, revealing interactions. Sylvia and Franky? Fun. Martha and Twilight? Exciting. Anya and Norman Normalson? Wholesome. Bond and Yuri? Hilarious. McMahon and Henderson? Unexpected but potentially enlightening. Yor and Damian? I would love to see this actually. etc etc.

Which is why Nightfall sucks as a character. You put her in a room with any of these folks except Twilight, and she’d just sulk wishing she was in the room with Twilight. And that’s just boring.

*MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD*

Since we’re going to get to see the Cruise Arc - aka ‘Twilight misses his wife and gets called cringe by his daughter’ arc -

One of the reason why that arc is SxF firing on all cylinders is because it’s not just about 1 fake family, but 2. The similarities are there with Olka and Zeb, disguised beyond recognition, pretending to be husband and wife. With Zeb - in his own way - telling his fake wife that he’s loved her for a long time. With how all Olka wanted is for her remaining son to have a carefree life, even as she understood that as the wife of a murdered mafia boss means she probably would never find peace for herself.

But also, how Olka’s son Gram still recognised his mother, even as she no longer looks like the person she was. Children can see clearly through their parents’ masks, they don’t even need Anya’s powers. It’s part instinct, isn’t it? Olka will always be Gram’s mama, no matter what her appearance is, no matter they abscond and become strangers in a strange place, no matter what Olka needs to do to keep her remaining child alive.

This is a theme in SxF. Anya sees right through Yor and Twilight, and love them unconditionally even as she knows her parents may commit a murder now and again. And Damian too see right through Donovan. Deep down he knows he is not loved enough, even as he puts up a front and never openly admits - until recently, and to Anya - that all he shares with father is his name.

The children in SxF, even though they are just 4-6 year old, are much more perceptive of what the truth is, and when adults feed them lies. They may be blissfully oblivious to a lot of things, but they have feelings and unique worldview which makes them much more than ‘kids keep on being adorable and cute and that’s all we need in a story about going to school’.
