The Morumbi Mall Shooting

a Brazil case. Sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native english speaker

Mateus da Costa Meira was born in Salvador, Bahia. He lived alone in a apartment in São Paulo e studied medicine at University of Medical Sciences of the Santa Casa of São Paulo (a very prestigious institution). His family is rich and frequently have sent money to him. He used the internet a lot and was known for sending viruses and pornography to users.

People have described him as a shy, introvert and apathetic. He also has schizoid personality disorder. But other people described him as a kind boy, who changed drastically months before the massacre, skipping classes and approaching drug dealers.

Before the shooting he already had a pistol, but bought a submachine gun MAC-11 for the attack.

On the night of November 3, 1999, inside room 5 of the Morumbi Shopping movie theater, Mateus, then 24 years old, began watching the film Fight Club in the front row. He then got up from his seat and went to the bathroom, where he took the gun out of his bag and decided to test it by shooting at the mirror, apparently at his own image, with his American Cobray M-11 submachine gun. He then returned to the projection room and faced the audience. Next to the movie screen, he pulled out the gun again and fired it into the air.

Meira told police he planned the attack for seven years and chose the film Fight Club because the main character suffers from schizophrenia.

As result 3 people died and other 4 were injured. Initially, Mateus was sentenced to 120 years in prison, but the sentence was reduced to 48. After attempting to kill an inmate, he was transferred to a psychiatric hospital. Police investigated him for two additional crimes: drug possession and CD counterfeiting. In his apartment, they found CD piracy equipment, cocaine, crack cocaine and ammunition. In September 2024 he was released from prision.

Today at school I observed my classmates and realized how they had no idea what I really am or what I think about them. People are very fragile and it's funny.

I usually think of everyone as puppets who follow what they are told, and to do this they join together in groups, excluding and throwing away those who do not interest them, or who do not do what they want, because society works like that, and then they will find their own puppets to continue their cycle, that's why I hate humanity and I admire those who end this cycle.
