Not at all!!! League is the opposite of a story-based game. Champions are meant to represent an archetype in the rift and shout some cool catchphrases. MOST are self contained, a few have interwoven plotlines that can span years. Some character stories get updated over time in the form of short fiction / comics / event based visual novels but most of that content can be looked up online.

“v.1″ refers to their original release bios, “v.2″ to post runeterra universe reboot bios. Worth noting that some of these changes were... contentious; blitzcrank’s new origin story as something viktor did not create but simply mod is mostly ignored by fans, who still refer to original events in a vague manner. The omission of stanwick in jayce / blitz’ updated bios is a big questionmark. To get in the spirit of the thing I just go all in the ‘Unreliable Narrator’ aspect of their whole shebang and cobble together my own interpretation of events.

CONVERGENCE: A LEAGUE OF LEGENDS STORY

'CONVERGENCE' is an Ekko-led platformer game that released in 2023. An accompanying free-to-download comic miniseries was made to supplement the game's story, and it focuses on Jayce, Viktor, Ekko himself & his family -- and how they are all interwoven as the 'struggling genius' archetype in a very flawed system.

This series features a retelling of J/V's backstories through the lens of an outsider, and a bit of an update on where they are now. Surprising absolutely no one: they are still very attached to each other. (This comic is standalone, and not part of the Arcane universe.)

[ Jayce Talis’ journal ] was available to read in the league client while the show was airing. “Far From Home” “Progress Day” “A Powerful Partnership” are all diary entries; the layout is a bit finicky but click on chapter numbers to progress, the image on the side changes to match!

Wild Rift limited content:

[ Jayce got a champion release webtoon ] that never made it to NA servers. It quickly summarizes his deal and vaguely hints Viktor is in the update horizon.

There is a tentative translation offered by blessed twitter user crossedfires, highlight being the jayce/viktor panel wherein he remarks: 

“Genius is always lonely, I know this truth very well. Until Viktor appeared – I admit it – he is the only gear comparable to me.” (uses the verb xiāngdāng (comparable) that means match, balance, correspond to). One of my mandarin-speaking friends has also pointed out the wordplay lends itself to double meaning; “He is the only gear to match/that matches mine.”

Punches&Plants 2 - Altcanon comedy, various champs living in an urbanized fantasy version of runeterra. Jayce and Viktor retire from a life of rivalry to dedicate themselves to new hobbies. Viktor is a dollmaker, Jayce is a weeb. Blitzcrank has an unfortunate job.

Jayce and Viktor also have plenty of AU ingame skins with their own micro bios. Not linking these here since itd be too much info/ u can easily google; they share the Battlecast universe (ppl like this one) and the Heavy Metal universe (ppl dislike this one for various reasons, namely retconning Viktor’s full machine skin from ‘his last stage of mechanization’ into a very unfortunate stereotype.) They were meant to be an annoying player and an annoyed dungeon master in the Riftquest universe but riot scrapped Viktor’s skin. RIP

Jayce being more romantically possessive with Viktor is both some great Submissive Like A Guard Dog content but ALSO. very very funny to think about in the context of the two worlds Jayce occupies.

The Academy: full of the exact type of nerd who would and do foam at the mouth for Viktor's slim, golden eyed, smooth accented, tragic-sexy dark academia rizz. Viktor may be too focused on his work to care, but Jayce is not being paranoid that everyone in this building wants his man carnally

Piltover High Society: sees Jayce Talis, the pinnacle of charming conventionally attractive masculinity with a 1000kw smile and shoulders like a brick house, growling over that emaciated, antisocial, weedy Zaunite nerd who keeps hacking up a lung. And they're like "bitch no one wants your man. why do you want your man???"

im starting to believe more that jayce knew he had feelings for viktor when they were working on hextech, but just stomped them down because (1) he wasn’t sure if viktor reciprocated (2) didn’t want to lose the only person who cared about supporting his passion.

“i’ve been confused about a lot lately.” yeah, i understand people finding this to be his bi awakening moment, but may i also propose that he may have not known if viktor had romantic feelings for him until seeing mage viktor? and thought that viktor just wanted to work on the hextech stuff with him?

jayce is more emotionally intelligent than a lot of people want to acknowledge and i feel like he had a moment, if not during their partnership, then he definitely did after he saved viktor with the hexcore, where he knew just what his feelings were.

Sorry but It's actually so annoying how much people downplay the crucial role piltover's corrupt council games played in derailing jayce/viktor's work and pretty much putting shackles around their lives. The council is directly responsible for and directly FUNDING so much of the misery that happens in this show, before the story has even started. Before Powder ever finds the gemstone. They single-handedly doom half of the region to death.

Just during the show: Jayce wanted to create magic to aid and uplift the common people, the council wanted trade route instant teleportators to make themselves richer.

Jayce & Viktor wanted to work on technology to help miners and steelworkers and artisans who are trying to survive in the industrial hellscape of piltover and zaun; the council wants it shelved for another 20 years. (yes, heimer is part of the corrupt council - no matter how much his image is laundered by the fandom.)

They are inept and self-serving leaders, elected by themselves and their blood inheritances, utterly obsessed with ultimate profit. You can really see how parasitic their relationship is to the people at the beggining of act 1. Jayce is a token nameless life, so disposable to them that they were going to burn down all of his research and throw out all of his titles, making him not just a lower-house vassal but an EXILE, and the only reason why that doesn't happen is because they realize how much money they can suck out of his work.

This applies to Viktor too. See the way that Heimerdinger tells him over and over again that no other paths can be taken, he has 'fulfilled his purpose' and he should be content to die. See how Mel looks at Viktor like a bug she wants to squash under her palm when he rejects the idea of making weapons for council. See how they speak over him and only address Jayce, as if he's worth less than nothing.

You are only as valuable as the profit you're willing to create. You are a problem that has to be dealt with as soon as you refuse their orders. They have the power to ruin your life, and if they find an excuse, they will. This is a direct threat pointed at Jayce & Viktor during ACT2, when Jayce is pressured into becoming one of them to protect 'the bottom line profit' and, personally speaking, to avoid that ire being redirected towards Viktor. He's pushed into compliance and told a target has been painted on his back.

Arcane jayvik are doomed in big part not for wanting to do harm, but being forced to exist under the beck and call of billionaire leeches. They are both immigrants. They are both struggling to get a degree and keep themselves afloat and they want to help people so goddamn much but they have to keep postponing their dreams to serve uncaring masters. I really wish there was more fan content focused on these very real bonds of understanding and solidarity between them.

When Viktor says 'Jayce will understand' that's not a fluke; he's lived in this environment for years. He knows Jayce is being pushed down the same way that he is and that deep down they've been kept captive by the exact same people. When Jayce agrees that Viktor should do whatever he needs to do to keep himself alive, he means that from the heart.

Cloaked in the balmy flickering light of his bedside lamp, Viktor seems to curl in further on himself, lips pressed tightly. Reason has long departed both of them, left with the sweat and tears and kiss-swollen lips and the clothes shed beside Viktor’s mattress. Left in just his briefs, the hairs on his arms on end from the chill that sweeps by, Viktor looks smaller than Jayce has ever seen him. Vulnerable. “This will not work.” A hand on his shoulder that doesn’t get brushed away, Jayce’s warmth meeting cool skin, thumb gentle in the spot between his collarbone and his shoulder blade. The column of his neck to his jaw is bruised purple, Jayce’s doing. A stab to his gut. Another argument neither of them had the energy to bear, each one a repeat of the last, an ouroboros of quarrelling Jayce wishes would end. “It’s- I don’t want it either. You know this is to help people, not- not oppress them, V. I’m not going to let them.” Jayce’s attempts at diffusing are truths, but not wholly- the blockade was his call, the schematics just to protect himself something he’d throw aside at never having to see this look on Viktor’s face again, to lose what they have. Danger still pressed in on every corner; The Undercity meaning to ravage whatever they have; the threat posed by their stolen work- the work of a Zaunite, no less; the vicious demands of the council; the call to aid through enhanced munitions, an idea both of them opposed. An idea both of them should. “I know, none of this is ideal, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work. We just have to-” “You misunderstand me, Jayce.” Viktor shrugs off his hand. “I am not talking about the weaponry.” Viktor doesn’t meet his eyes, his expression devoid of everything he had spared Jayce moments ago. Wiped from his mouth not even ten minutes before was the smile that crept up with a contented hum, replaced with the gloom of a flat frown. “I am talking about us.” Jayce balls his hand into a fist in the bedsheets, velvety silk grazing his fingernails. His breaths speed, heart pounding in his ears like a thundering war drum, warning of the oncoming battle. Warped and irregular.

Jayvik becomes objectively more tragic when you remember that Jayce’s whole life, he has been entranced by magic. It was his reason to research, to pursue discovery- when he was faced with losing it, he was prepared to end it all.

And then Viktor became that magic. He literally embodied it and became one with the magic that Jayce was enraptured by, and it was all Jayce’s fault-

And then that magic turned out to be corrupt. Dangerous. And again- it was All. Jayce’s. Fault. He dreamt too big. Flew too close to the sun. Fucked his and Viktor’s and everyone is Piltover’s lives up, without anyone’s consent but his own.

Imagine the guilt of that, for a second. That your entire life’s purpose became the biggest threat to life itself. That your greatest discovery would lead to the greatest destruction your world has ever seen.

And not only that- but it is animating the corpse of your partner, is connected to their soul in a way that you cannot undo-

I do not blame Jayce for snapping, for destroying what he’d created. It must’ve cleaved his heart into two, to do so. In one fell swoop, the two reasons he’d had for existing- Viktor and his magic- gone.

It was not callous. It was not cold. It was a kamikaze mission for Jayce.

Viktor’s death was akin to Jayce’s own. In bringing down the axe on Viktor, he tightened the noose around his own neck.

In killing Viktor, he killed them both.
