Summary: Peter overworks himself leaving him feverish and off his game, luckily Tony is a great mentor
Italics in the story mean thoughts… Word Count 2430
_______________
As Peter swung through the late night sky, the cool weather struggled to penetrate through his heated suit as New York began to snow. He had been working late as Spider-Man the last few nights as his school was shut for Winter break meaning no early mornings or at least he hoped, his Aunt May woke him as she left for work thanks to his advance hearing. Within these late days [4 to be exact] he had taken down Spider Slayers, muggers, and saved trapped people from 3 different fires amongst other things; though his enhanced healing helped him continue on he couldn't help but feel the world spin around him whenever he took a sharp turn.
Carefully landing on top of a building, he panted for a minute before catching his breath, "Hey Karen," he spoke to his suit as he paced kicking some snow on the flat roof.
"Yes Peter," the A.I. replied with a somehow amused tone - man, Tony really makes good machines.
He stretched as he spoke, "Can you warm up my suit anymore, it's getting colder," he slightly whined - though he'd deny it.
Karen's voice spoke calmly, "The temperature in the suit is currently set at 78 fahrenheit, 25 centigrade, I will change it to 84 fahrenheit, 29 centigrade if you wish," she explained which received a 'yes please,' Karen continued, "I detect that your vitals are off Peter, might I suggest going to rest, you seem to be developing a fever," she explained.
Peter frowned as he took off again feeling much more comfortable in the heated suit, "What's my temperature?" he curiously questioned his favourite A.I.
It took Karen a moment before she spoke, "102.1 fahrenheit, 38.9 centigrade," she concluded.
Before Peter could take in what he had heard a gunshot rang out below accompanied by smashed glass, followed by a man running off from a 24 hour convenience store, Peter smirked before diving down toward the path, shooting a web last second from hitting the ground, speedily catching up to the crook, he whooed with excitement from the rush of the dive before quieting down and finally jumping in front of the crook who had the black bag.
The roads were clear as Spider-man cockily webbed the man the thief had no chance to fire his weapon or even see Spider-man appear before him before his inevitable webbing to the street light. Peter grinned beneath his mask, "It'll dissolve don't worry, but the Police will be here before that happens," the teen teased with his hands behind his head. He relaxingly headed into the empty street to pick up the bag of stolen cash and return it to the shop keep, the adrenaline rush was over and again he felt the weight of nearly 2 weeks of late crime fighting hit him. His head ached deeply as he swallowed a yawn when his spider sense went off crazy, he barely had a second before a speeding car came his way forcing him to leap out the way, the vehicle harshly braked skidding as it did with a group of thugs coming out with their weapons firing. Peter's head spun from his dive and having to try to desperately dodge the flying bullets leading one to go through his shoulder and another to plant itself in his thigh. The teen called out in pain having not been shot before, he was normally able to grab the guns before the criminals could attack but he was not on top of his game, this was his own fault. As the bullets hit he called out in pain having to kneel and defend himself from a very compromising position, Peter tried desperately and finally landed his webbing on the weapons, blocking their escape and causing the gunpowder to blow up in the thugs' hands.
He quickly stuck one of the 4 large bulky men with the one he had already captured however before he could grab the rest they had already grabbed the duffle full of cash and drove off. Peter grunted as he attempted to move, "I do not recommend moving, Peter. Your fever has now reached 102.6 fahrenheit, 39.2 centigrade, you have been shot in your left shoulder and thigh -"
"I know I've been shot, Karen," Peter grumbled, "but I need to get them!" he practically yelled as he pushed through the pain and swung as fast as he could to catch up to the vehicle which was heading toward docks at the edge of town.
Karen's voice came to as she spoke not even a minute later, "You are pushing yourself further than you need to, Peter, your temperature has elevated to 103.1 fahrenheit, 39.5 centigrade. If it reaches 104 fahrenheit, 40 centigrade I am afraid I will need to inform Tony Stark." she explained.
Peter squeaked, "Karen!" before landing on a high pile of crates looking down at the trouble below; the slender black sports car was parked on the deck the three men with their masks off all speaking to someone in a fisherman's outfit holding a white case.
He watched for a moment not hearing the whirls of the Iron Man suit land next to him as he was captivated trying to see what was in the white case, it was only until he heard Tony's voice that he gasped and looked over, "Kid what are you doing here?" Tony questioned his voice mixed with surprise and confusion but coated with a cool tone.
Spider-Man noticed how Tony was surprised with his presence perhaps meaning that Karen didn't tell on him! "I uh, I was following those thugs they robbed some convenience store but got away before I could get them all, there's two tied up outside the store front."
Tony spoke tiredly, "You tried to take on 5 loaded thugs alone? And do you know the time - why are you out this late it's nearly 3 am!" he angrily whispered to not tip off the criminals of their presence, "Isn't it a school night?" he questioned frowning.
Rubbing the back of his head with his good arm Peter explained, "Winter break," he simply put before shushing Stark and ducking down.
"Did you just shush me?" Iron Man exasperatedly gestured to himself, "Friday did he just shush me? Cause I think he shushed me!"
Before Peter could respond his spider sense activated as gunshots went their way, he backed away from the edge ducking down until finally the click of the case opened and a white blast went their way knocking the pile of crates down crashing into the ones surrounding it, Tony was able to float however Peter had nothing to swing to as all his high points were falling around him. Suddenly, he was falling.
Before he could cry out Tony grabbed his left arm causing Peter to release a strained call of pain, "Spider-Man?!" Tony called shocked, he'd caught Peter this way before it shouldn't have hurt!
"I'm fine let's just take care of these - please!" He quickly added, Stark didn't have time to question it as another blast came their way, it was large and bright but didn't travel far. "Mr Stark, is this more alien tech?" He asked his voice shaking slightly.
Tony nodded, "Seems like it, you'll be alright kid, I'm on my way." he said carefully.
It hit Peter then that this was another empty suit, he should have guessed Tony was busy in the tower to be on patrol like this, "N-no, I'll be fine you don't have to come out!" he tried not wanting to bother his teacher and what he'd like to call friend.
"Already on my way kid, 3 minutes out." Tony announced. The suit whirled and landed releasing Peter, "Keep the goons busy my suit will get the alien weapon." he ordered, the sound of jets in the background.
Peter quickly dodged the guns which were pointed his way, the Iron suit flying to attack the man with the alien technology. He breathed slowly trying to stop his head from spinning before jumping in the air and flipping catching two men's legs and throwing them high in the air, he quickly grabbed the weapons from their hands and threw them into the pile of crates before sticking the thugs together face to face and leaving them upside down on a standing light. Peter landed just in time to see the Iron Man suit get blown away into the crates nearby sparks coming from the suit as it tried to stand again. He stumbled slightly feeling the powerful blast in the air but the radius for damage of the device was only short thankfully. Spider-Man's sense went off suddenly as the final crook came to stab him with a long switch blade but he was too slow, Peter's adrenaline was pumping as he kicked the knife from the man's hand and stuck him to a pile of collapsed crates. Before he could utter his one liner he was suddenly thrown 15 feet in the air landing roughly against a wooden pole acting as a barrier for a path to a fishing boat. The teen groaned rolling over, suddenly all the pain came back at once, his head, his shoulder, his leg, and now his ribs joining the party of ache.
With his spider sense going off, Peter quickly released a web and pulled himself down the path toward the boat out of range of the blast that same breaking the old wooden barrier, "Peter," Karen's voice suddenly appeared, "Your temperature is at 103.8 fahrenheit, 39.8 centigrade, I detect that the bullet in your thigh is also moving, I advise you to alert -" a blast rang out abruptly throwing Peter from the decking and into the freezing water.
He struggled for breath even with his suits oxygen level remaining a good level [he really had to thank Mr Stark for the updates], the wind was completely knocked out of him leaving him like a gaping fish, "The suit has been compromised, I cannot regulate the temperature and your right web shooter is offline," Karen explained but that did not help Peter right now as he gasped desperately for air and sunk further into the sea.
Darkness was all he could see as he dropped further into the water, he couldn't move as the freezing water stabbed through his body leaving him defenseless, tears pricked his eyes as he struggled. Panic began to set in, he tried to calm his breathing and attempted to move but as soon as he did he screamed below the surface only silence heard above, "You have three broken ribs, Peter," Karen gently spoke, "you have to tell Tony," she pleaded.
Before he could retaliate, a familiar bright blue light came into the water and grabbed his right arm, pulling round the suits shoulders and flying them both out of the icy tomb. Shivering as they landed, Peter wanted nothing more than to rip off his mask and breath in the dirty fresh New York air but even more so wanted to just swing away from embarrassment. He blinked a few times as a blur clouded over his eyes, wait - was Tony speaking? He hadn't realised… he looks pretty mad, why can't he hear what Tony's saying?
The next thing Peter knew he wasn't cold anymore. He groggily woke up under a thin sheet and a blanket, no longer in his costume but in a pair of sweats. "Okay Peter, think," he said out loud, "the store robbery, uhh decks…" then suddenly it all came back to him, the shot wounds, his fever; looking around Peter figured out he was in the medical wing in Avengers tower meaning Tony must have taken him here after getting him from the water… I'm so dead! He thought suddenly seeing Tony entering through the glass doors. "M-M-Mr Stark, look I know what you're going to say! I know I was reckless and stupid for letting myself get sick and hurt and not telling you and breaking the suit and-and-"
Tony put his hand up stopping Peter's rambling immediately, "Enough," his voice was deep and tired, in fact he looked exhausted, "Do you even realise how bad you were when I pulled you out the water? You stood for about three seconds before collapsing! Only for Karen to inform me after that you had a high fever and 10 different injuries!" He snapped, inhaling gradually before continuing, "You've been asleep for 3 days, you're lucky you have enhanced healing else I have no idea what state you would have been in," control in his speech as he concluded, "You can tell me whenever you're hurt, I need you to kid…"
Peter looked down at his lap guilt and shame written all over his face, "I'm sorry," he mumbled, Stark sat down all anger gone from his face seeing the sincerity in the apology. "What did you tell Aunt May?" He asked hoping he told her something that would not get him in too much trouble.
"That you were helping me with a project, you forgot to charge your phone, and were always busy when she rang, she wasn't too pleased but it's better than what I could have said." He explained opening his holographic tablet, "Oh, also you're missing your first day of school right now," Tony smirked seeing Peter go wide-eyed.
Jumping from the sheets Peter panicked, "Why didn't anyone wake me! May's gonna kill me for sure now!" he cried before noticing his last standing backpack on a chair against the wall with some clothes on it too.
"I had Happy get your things yesterday since it seemed you weren't going to wake up until now," Stark explained before standing and holding onto Peter's shoulders, "Are you sure you're okay to go, you don't have to," his voice was stern but almost caring.
Smiling at this Peter nodded, "Mr Stark, I swear everything feels fine!" he assured.
Tony sighed “What’s his temp Friday?” he asked receiving a notice of 97 fahrenheit, 36.1 centigrade before finally letting him get dressed, “Happy will give you a ride, kid.” he waved before leaving the room, the glass turning white to give him some privacy. Peter ran through the doors not long after heading to leave until he saw Tony slumped on a sofa fast asleep, he felt bad that Tony had stayed up the last few days caring for him, he made a mental promise to never fail Tony again!
