I’ve had this vague plot bunny for the longest time that’s not going anywhere soon because 1.) no idea what the actual Story is and 2.) I have like 5 other projects I want to work on first but the basic points as I have them are
steampunk or otherwise Different Reality setting. think late 1890s/early 1900s aesthetic
takes place at the funeral (and specifically inside the mansion) of a very eccentric and blasphemously rich inventor who’s left the bulk of her fortune to a great-niece who no one’s seen in some years, having been away on fabulous foreign adventures since she was a young lady. some have speculated that she too is either dead or disgraced and the family has just covered it up
enter our main character, a daring lady thief™ who’s hatched a daring plan: pose as the Mysterious Missing Niece and bluff her way through the funeral services to make bank.
unfortunately, this is isn’t going to just be a single day of condolences and fake crying. in true Eccentric Billionaire fashion, the dearly deceased has arranged for her funeral to be a multi-day party complete with games and puzzles to earn certain items from her personal collection. she thought a little fun would help ease the grieving process, but what actually ensues is a cutthroat competition between her family and colleagues to secure access to her many patents and research.
understandably curious, our Lady Thief begins poking around the mansion trying to discover what this rich old weirdo’s deal was while maintaining her cover as the Missing Niece. needless to say, secret rooms, zany traps, and conspiring fellow mourners abound. hot air balloons factor into this somehow, I just know it.
there’s a sassy butler, obviously, keeping an uncomfortably close eye on our Lady Thief because he’s been onto her bullshit since day one.
and there’s this Intrepid Reporter Woman who our Lady Thief can’t seem to avoid, who keeps popping up in places she shouldn’t be and knows far more about this family than even a particularly determined reporter should. who is she? what’s her game? and why does our Lady Thief want to kiss her in the moonlight?
is the Intrepid Reporter Woman secretly the real Mysterious Missing Niece, going undercover at her great aunt’s funeral for her own amusement? or maybe to take the target off her back and make sure the inheritance is split up justly? you bet your britches.
they team up to zag on the greedy relatives and nasty competitors, take the money, and run away together on a train
the end

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
I recently ran out on my YUM pins, so I’m gonna be restocking them! Now’s a good time to preorder it, along with a new one: DELICIOUS. There’s a preorder exclusive sale to get both of them that won’t show up again.

I came out as trans to my uncle, and he wrote the loveliest response:
“Thank you for coming out to us! It is a joyful occasion to share being yourself with your family. The consciousness that resides in each of us is without gender, but gender and bodies are trappings that we put on, and it is important that you are comfortable in them. Much like a decent pair of pants.”

Of course, the real way to tell whether you’re in a Hard SF novel is if people keep providing you with unsolicited explanations of basic physics and everyday technology which you should, by rights, already know.

Fun D&D rule for your home games: If you’re out of spell slots, you can keep using spells, but at your own personal expense - it will cost you points of exhaustion. A level 1 spell will cost you 1 point of exhaustion, level 2 will cost 2 points, etc… up to level 6, at which point you die. So you can sacrifice yourself to do one final level 6 spell, but nothing higher. This way you could give your party one last clutch spell, but you have to spend days recovering afterwards.
