Like, you can’t just say that a character is a fuckup and leave it at that – there are many flavours of fuckuppery. At a minimum, you’ve got:

1. The character who’s perpetually caught by surprise by the extremely obvious consequences of their actions because they habitually don’t think shit through.

2. The character whose ignorance and/or failure to realistically assess the situation leads them to draw unreasonably optimistic conclusions about the likely consequences of their actions.

3. The character who knows the risks, but enormously overestimates their own competence, attributing any failure to avoid harmful outcomes to bad luck or circumstances beyond their control.

4. The character who doesn’t exactly have a plan to deal with the consequences, but they’re very confident of their own cleverness, so they’re sure they’ll figure it out by the time it becomes a problem.

5. The character who absolutely has a plan, but relies so heavily on uncontrollable factors and unreliable information that in practice they may as well be rolling dice.

6. The character who genuinely believes their plan went great in spite of all evidence to the contrary because they can’t connect the dots between their actions and the consequences.

7. The character who goes about their business purposefully and with a full appreciation of the probable outcomes, and only realises after everything has gone precisely according to plan that wait, this is bad.

One fun fact about me is that there is a pit in the forest. It is a part of me.
