Kotetsu smiled and planted the side of his head onto his fist as he watched Hayate’s eyes soften and the grin on his lips spread while recounting what his past teammate was like. The emotional bomb had been defused!

It wasn’t any wonder why he and Kotetsu never ran with each other much. Kotetsu was nothing short of a punk ass, getting in trouble for stealing things from stores and doing whatever he felt like without much care for the people around him.

When people cried around him, he’d laugh. Then he’d get mad and just tell them to stop or go somewhere else with it. He’d break things just to upset people, harass all the cats he’d walk by in the streets, generally and genuinely be the biggest pain in the ass anyone has ever had the misfortune of knowing!

It was never a matter of choice in Kotetsu making and keeping friends, it was just that his reputation was so bad that no one wanted to put up with him.

To put it simply,

Tokara sounded like everything Kotetsu lacked.

If Kotetsu had known Tokara then, maybe he wouldn’t have been such a bad kid.

He almost giggles at the little pipe dream in his head but everything on his face and in his heart returns to baseline as soon as he hears that sob come from Hayate and witness the tears threatening to drop into his mug.

Shit.

Who was good at handling this type of stuff? Someone smart, someone kind, someone who knows how to take care of everyone else… gods, what would Shiranui do?!

“It sounds like we would’a gotten along,” Kotetsu doesn’t even realize what he’s doing as he places a hand on Hayate’s shoulder then sort of awkwardly rubs it along the top of his back, “all three of us, maybe. All of us practicing our kenjutsu… I wouldn’t be able to handle keeping track of all those scrolls though so it sounds like the guy had a great memory, too. No wonder he knew how you liked your tea!”

More awkward rubbing…

“And, uhm, Izumo told me something once. When I was refusing to grieve for my sister, and when he had to tell me again when my dad died, he said something really smart. He told me that tears come from all the pent up emotions you’ve got inside so you just gotta let it out when it wants to come out.”

Pat… pat?

Okay that’s enough, he’s taking his hand back now.

“So if there’s a bunch of emotions you’ve got all stuck up in your heart and chest and stuff, you should let it out. I don’t care. I mean I do care! I just don’t care that you’re crying,” he scratches his eyebrow and closes his eyes out of embarrassment, “you get what I mean!”
