In defence of Oscar (AGAIN)

I'm in the process of finishing up my Chinese GP debrief but holeeey moleey, I am so close to losing my shit about the absolute dumpster fire takes I am seeing about Oscar and his 'lack of race pace/progression as a driver' and just need to come to his defence for a second (AGAIN).

1. The last thing I want to do is make excuses for Oscar, but for fucks sake this was his first time racing here at this circuit, one that is known for being all about tyre management. So any normal person would know he would have a natural pace deficit to Lando's pace, as would any driver who is new to a circuit. Proof? All new drivers (Oscar, Logan, Yuki, and Zhou had significant pace deficits to their experienced teammates).

2. Oscar faced several factors throughout this weekend that significantly affected his opportunities to learn this track/the car as he usually would. Instead of the usual 3 hours, he had:

Only ONE HOUR of free practice with comparable conditions to the race.

A sprint qualifying IN WET CONDITIONS (where if he didn't have the gearbox issue he would've easily been P4/P5).

A 30-minute sprint in which his car was STILL AFFECTED by the gearbox issue (this was stated in the Mclaren app/pre-quali broadcast, the mechanics were working into the beginning of quali to fix his car).

3. Pirelli had instructed a change of the tyre pressure based on the findings from the sprint race (source), which now meant there would be more degradation on the tyres. This also meant that whatever Oscar had learned from the sprint/practice wasn't as valuable as the tyres would have now change their behaviour (!!!).

4. In previous such races, Oscar always improves his pace deficit to Lando during his second and third tyre stints (examples: Abu Dhabi 2023, Japan, etc). However, because of the damage he sustained to the diffuser (THROUGH NO FAULT OF HIS OWN AGAIN), he had to manage a significant loss to the car's aerodynamic efficiency (~0.4s of pace) whilst still managing his tyres and trying to maintain position (WHICH HE DID).

SO AFTER ALL THAT, Oscar still managed to qualify P5 (only 0.1s off Lando in P4) AND managed to nurse the damaged car for like 30 laps whilst managing his tyres and holding off a rapidly approaching 7-time world champion. He finished P8 and continued the Mclaren streak of 100% point finishes. All whilst maintaining his composure and patience during a difficult race. I cannot stress how much effort and skill that takes, and how many drivers would not be able to do what he did in those laps.

I have already stated in previous posts (here, here) how Oscar is showing great improvement in his second year, AS IS WHAT IS EXPECTED OF HIM. People tend to "overhype" Oscar and place unrealistic expectations of him only because they have an agenda against Lando, and tend to underrate how strong of a driver Lando is (easily a top 5, dare I say top 3 driver).

And the funniest thing, especially when I see certain fans hate on Oscar or say that "Mclaren made a mistake signing him longterm" (BFFR) is that Oscar's progression in his second year is almost EXACTLY LIKE LANDO'S in his second year.

Tyre management is a skill that is built over time and through experience on these tracks as you have to learn how to drive the car and adjust your driving to not put too much stress into the tyres through the corners. And, it is one of the skills that is easy to improve on, compared to other traits such as natural raw pace (that Oscar has) or not crashing the car unnecessarily (which Oscar doesn't do).

So in conclusion, I have no doubt that Oscar will improve this area... because he already is. Don't believe me? Well the stats don't lie.
