i am just gonna need folks to pay attention to the 76 different minute facial expressions/emotions Kit Connor shows on his face before Nick finally says “…yeah” when Charlie asks if he would kiss him. i also request careful attention paid to how impossibly soft and vulnerable Joe Locke makes his voice when he asks “…would you kiss me?” i don’t know what we collectively did to deserve these two but we are, without a doubt, absolutely blessed

I’m just…obsessed with the attention to detail that was put into this show. It’s so clear that every department was completely dedicated to making this seamless piece of art.

The fact that we are still finding little things like this over a month after it’s release is a testament to that. I don’t even know how many times I’ve rewatched at this point (definitely upwards of 20) and I didn’t catch that.

The day Nick comes to Charlie's house in the rain, the day after the party, the day after they kissed, was March 21st.

The first day of spring.

We know from behind the scenes how much importance they purposfully put in place to show/illustrate the changing of the seasons. Because it was mean to show Nick and Charlie's love blossoming. And the day they became a thing, the day after they kissed, the day they started "sort of going out" was the first day of spring.

Let’s talk about the first kiss…

…in the whole series. The first time we see a couple kiss on screen in Heartstopper (ignoring Ben because we should always ignore Ben), it’s Tara and Darcy’s beautiful “Clearest Blue” moment in ep.3 at Harry’s party. A lot of people have spent a lot of time talking about this kiss. The impact it’s had, Nick’s reaction, the transcendent queer joy of it all, but there’s one blink-and-you-miss-it moment that I can’t get out of my head:

Right there. Right before they start to kiss, Darcy looks Tara in the eyes, nods her head, and says something. And then Tara smiles and just barely nods in response before they have their moment. It’s like Darcy is asking, “Are you sure?” and Tara is. She’s giving Tara the agency to be visible on her terms (and also showing that enthusiastic consent doesn’t have to ruin a moment), a theme we see running through the whole series, but perfectly encapsulated in this tiny moment that precedes one of the highest highs in all 8 episodes.

A lot of the conversations focusing on characters’ queer visibility in the show are prompted by anxiety or distress in ways that other themes are not, whether it’s Nick’s reservations with sharing his queerness until he’s able to work through his confusion and settle into a label, or Tara’s hurt and frustration with the reactions to her coming out. In this moment though, it’s not about fear or worry; it’s about two girls, in love, deciding that they’re ready to experience that love unfettered by the imposing force of observation. They don’t just start making out on the crowded dance floor on a whim, or because they’re caught up in the moment (which would, of course, still be ok and beautiful and precious). They make a conscious decision in that moment and I just think that adds so much more weight to the scene, and to the release we see when they part from that first kiss.

Kit Connor does this thing with his face after the kiss scenes in episodes 3, 4, and 5 where he just shows all these different emotions all at once? He somehow manages to look shocked, overwhelmed, totally in awe and bursting with love for Charlie, all at the same time. How does Kit Connor do so much with his face at once?

Can we take a moment to talk about how at the end of ep.2, when Nick switches to his camera roll it is:

1. Already open

2. The most recently opened app before insta

and most importantly,

3. Already scrolled up to the middle of the snow day photos from like at least a week prior

This was not the first time, even recently, that Nick had been scrolling through those pics.

No, but, do you know how I know the costuming team knew what they were doing on Heartstopper? The cuffs on Nick’s Sports Day tshirt sleeves and his beach date jorts. That right there is some real, honest bisexual representation.
