Yes i love using stuff like this and try to support local bookstores however i can
Mild rant that's been bugging me and i like to vent in text i sent my sister to a bookstore about a half an hour away from her to pick a book for me that i sent her the money for as well as gas money to go get it cause she was a lil low im having her read this book for content warnings for me so that's why i did it that way and i really wanted to check out this store and thought she'd enjoy getting to check it out it seemed very lovely and after asking her about it the first thing she mentioned was that it was expensive
And the little vein in my forehead starts twitching
She complains about this everytime we go to an independent bookstore I've never heard her complain about the prices at bookamillion or barnes and noble just indies and its like they didn't make the prices the publishers did you're upset with the wrong people they can't afford to sell books at a lost like amazon or walmart so shocker they are the price as advertised on the back of every book you own yes i understand publishing books have raised prices so has everything else this is not new take it out on walmart instead of books n stuff that are trying to make rent and get in queer authors (she's freaking pan) and authors that might not have a audience without them
She literally complained when we went to an amazing bookstore in Bloomington morgensterns that reopened after barnes and noble went out of business in Bloomington honestly cutest story I've ever heard they had a wall of manga and a wall of graphic novels a section for dnd and a section for queer authors things i thought that she would love i got a copy of kikis delivery service the book psychonaut and libernull my friend got an alan watts book and a book about poisons loved it and she just complained she want to go to half price books which we did and that was fine but there was nothing wrong with morgensterns its was amazing
Any rate i can't take my sister to any bookstores any more and im mad about it i just want to support authors not buy all their books second hand and take forever to even find them
Independent bookstores around the country have a particularly clever lifeline, one perfectly suited to the unprecedented moment we find ourselves in. The strange part? It came into being just weeks before the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, and before the bookstores started closing up shop wondering if they’d reopen at all.
The lifeline in question is called Bookshop.
In simple terms, it’s a super clean, user-friendly online bookstore whose raison d’être is supporting independent bookstores — not simply with exposure or resources (though that’s certainly a factor), but with cold hard cash…

The fallen angel
Stood by the door
Couldn't take the singing of praises anymore
Decided to go out the door
Through the gate
Down to the bottom floor
Would god curse me if i did wrong
Smite me down
For stepping out of line
Exile me for breaking a vow
Like adam and eve
Is it wrong to want something more
Then eternal love and serenity
Why must we be held down
To what is only just in "his" eyes
And who made him a guy anyway
Show me that what is right is true
While I'm running from you
Show me goodness while i break taboo
Not godliness
And i might believe in you
Now tell me what i believe is true

53- Sally & Gillian Owens
53- Sally & Gillian Owens (Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman). Practical Magic (1998)— By Alice Hoffman.
“Witch! Witch! You’re a bitch!”
Based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic is a classic must-see movie for anyone interested in magic and witchcraft. The film is centered around two sisters, Sally and Gillian Owens, who are the latest witches in a long, matriarchal line of women in a small New England town. The original witch, Maria Owens, was exiled to the Massachusetts Island in 1620 for loving the wrong man. In a fit of loneliness and madness, she cursed her bloodline so that any man who fell in love with an Owens woman would meet an early grave. This curse had manifested itself in each generation, culminating in Sally and Gillian’s own romantic problems.
Im not going to delve into plot points or synopsis. If you haven’t seen this movie, are you even alive? Its freaking Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock for goddess-sakes. Watch it! Accompanied by a quintessential late 90s soundtrack featuring the one and only Stevie Nicks (#59, further solidifying her place as a witch), the movie will leave you laughing, crying, and getting back in touch with your natural magic. While there are some in Witchcraft who don’t like this kind of movie, in part because of its Hollywood overtures (and even an account of a witch cursing the movie itself), I find this to be one of the best movies on the subject. It incorporates many elements of magic, and has dozens of accurate traditions and themes about witchcraft.
Similar to Charmed (#67), Practical Magic was a gateway movie for many young teens in the 00s for their entry into the craft. The portrayal of magic and witchcraft in this movie, and the various strong and powerful female leads, would make anyone want to jump on their broom and become a witch. The dichotomy between sisters, and the intergenerational tension between witches of different ages, makes this one of the most powerful allegories of feminism and the occult. The bewitching nature of Sally and Gillian shows the innate power of sisterhood. The two are connected spiritually and psychically, not just genetically. They are two halves of one whole, and balance each other out in terms of power, strength, and weakness.
The main story revolves around Sandra Bullock’s character, Sally. Following the tradition of witches who leave the craft, (kind of like Samantha #89), Sally has a sour taste in her mouth about magic. Particularly because the Owens curse has already taken one husband from her, leaving her to raise her two daughters alone, she tries to suppress both her and her daughters’ innate ability. Although she leaves more of the ceremonial aspects of witchcraft in her past, she nevertheless opens a botanical store making potions and tinctures for the small town. This illustrates the breadth and difference of kinds of magic, both ritual and natural. Sally can never truly leave her powers behind.
Nicole Kidman’s character Gillian embodies and embraces a completely different kind of witch and magic. Juxtaposed to the hyper studious and rigorous “herbologist/mother” archetype of her sister, Gillian is a seductress. She practices magic in completely different ways than her sister, using it to manipulate men to her desires. She excels at sex magic, with her bright red hair and captivating eyes. Oftentimes sex magic is belittled and minimized, but in Practical Magic, while its not exactly celebrated (and it does get her in to trouble), it is nevertheless acknowledged as equal to other kinds of magic. Gillian is vilified and feared by the small town, as a women who embraces her natural sexuality and erotic magnetism.
The movie conveys dozens of traditional witch-tropes. From the small town fearing and hating the witches (for generations), to the fear of the sexual power of women, Practical Magic covers it all. Although the townspeople have always feared the Owens, they still come to them for magical help. There is a fear of the “other”, but simultaneously an interest in and need for it. This has been the history of witchcraft—women in power have been vilified and feared for that power, but sought out for help when needed. The tables are turned when it is the Owens who need help from the town. In what is perhaps one of the most powerful aspects about the movie, Gillian becomes a survivor of domestic abuse. The sisters need a full coven to rid themselves of this evil, so they call upon the women in town. Rallying together and forming a coven with brooms interlocked, their female unity and power drives out this “male”-feasance. Through joining and uniting with the people of the town, the Owens’ curse is lifted.
Practical Magic beautifully captures the nature of witchcraft and the endless cycles of mothers and daughters and sisters and aunts. It shows that the empowerment of women is synonymous with witchcraft, as is the persecution of women. Given the success and longevity of both the book and movie, it is no surprise that Alice Hoffman recently released a prequel. The Rules of Magic became an instant bestseller, and is another must-read for witches and pagans. The prequel focuses on the life of the Aunts (who I’ve intentionally left out of this post, and who will CERTAINLY appear later in my series), and sets the necessary backdrop and history for Practical Magic. I could write about this movie ad nauseam (I haven’t even mentioned the friggin house, Sally’s daughters, etc.) because it fantastically captures so many vital aspects of witchcraft and conveys it in its cohesive 1h and 44 minutes. Don’t take my lengthy words for it, go watch it….again and again.
“There are some things I know for certain: always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.”
