Giant Antlions (Palpares immensus): these enormous antlions have been known to attack geckos and other small reptiles
The images above depict the larval stage of Palpares immensus, which is one of the largest antlion species in the world.
This article provides more information about the unusual behavior of this species:
The larvae live freely in sand and are ambush hunters. They are voracious predators and feed mainly on other arthropods, but have been known to attack geckos and, in one case a small adder. They are unable to feed on these reptiles and usually die as a result of not being able to extract their jaws from the vertebrate prey.
These antlions can be found in sandy, arid environments throughout southern Africa.
The adult form of Palpares immensus is also depicted in the images below:

There is such a love in me when I find a movie in mkv format. It's not a video format, it's a movie format. It included the video, usually multiple audio and subtitle tracks, usually with accessibility settings and assumes the least about its final audience. It even usually has scene/chapters time stamps, always ready for you to revisit. It feels especially loving when I find an old dutch horror movie about an evil elevator and its murder spree, a small gift just for me.

200 Word RPGs 2024
Each November, some people try to write a novel. Others would prefer to do as little writing as possible. For those who wish to challenge their ability to not write, we offer this alternative: producing a complete, playable roleplaying game in two hundred words or fewer.
This is the submission thread for the 2024 event, running from November 1st, 2024 through November 30th, 2024. Submission guidelines can be found in this blog's pinned post, here.

What are you all talking about, if that's a wringer, being put through it would do wonders for me
The phrase "to put [someone] through the wringer" is, of course, referring to a laundry wringer, a formerly popular but now little-used home appliance that looks like this:
It's easy to understand why being put through one would be an ordeal!
So here's the question I have: for the folks who just found out from this post what a laundry wringer is, and have been spelling it "through the ringer" all this time, what were you picturing when you said "ringer"?

Wool & lana
The word lana (wool) in languages such as Spanish is etymologically related to English wool. For words to be related, they don't have to look like each other. Instead, you have to be able to trace them back to the same ancestor through regular sound changes - and that's what linguists managed to do with wool and lana. The infographic shows the Germanic and Romance family trees of these words.
