Basketball : How It’s Played
What is Basketball?
- A Basketball is a game played between two teams that have 5 players each. The player’s goals is to scored by throwing a ball through a netted hoop fixed above each end of the court. The team with the most points are the winner.
Tumblr media
Center - The center is usually the tallest and the strongest among the team; He is also required to be physically intimidating. The center is the position under the basket. On offensive play most of the center don’t consistently score in mid-range. On Defense, the center is responsible for blocking the opponent’s shot. They are also the one who is expected to fight for rebounds as they are usually taller physically.
Power Forward - The Power forwards are usually the second tallest member in the team and are closest to the center’s physical appearance and playing style but with more speed. They are often the most versatile player, being able to score in the paint as well as being able to shoot from midrange. It will be more effective if they’re able to land a three-point consistently. Defensively, they are required to have the strength to guard bigger players close to the basket.
Small Forward - Small forward are usually shorter than the Power forward but play most versatile role out of the main five postion. The small forward must’ve enough height and have the ability to play on the inside as well as the agility to play o the outside. They are usually the second or the best shooters on the team.
Shooting Guard - He is the shortest among the players and is the team’s best outside shooter. He should be able to shoot well and also needs to be good at dribbling fast ,passing and having court vision by seeing the court
Point Guard - Usually the shortest but the best handler on the team. Point guard is responsible for directing the plays. They are excellent in long-distance shooting. They are also known as the “coach on the floor” or “Floor general”.
 Rules For The Offense:
The basketball team on offense is the team with the basketball. When a player has the basketball there are certain rules they must follow:
 1) While moving both feet, the player must bounce or dribble the ball. If, at any time, both hands touch the ball or the player stops dribbling, the player must only move one foot. The foot that is stationary is called the pivot foot.
 2) The basketball player can only take one turn at dribbling. In other words, they cannot start another dribble once a player has stopped dribbling. A player who commences dribbling again is called for a double-dribbling violation and looses the basketball to the other team. A player can only start another dribble after another player from either team physically contacts or gains control of the basketball. This is conventionally after a shot or pass.
 3) The ball must stay in bounds. The other team gets control of the basketball when the offensive team looses the ball out of bounds.
 4) The players hand must be on top of the ball while dribbling. If they physically contact the bottom of the basketball while dribbling and continue to dribble this is called carrying the ball and the player will lose the ball to the other team.
 5) They may not go back into  back-court once the offensive team crosses the half court. This is called a back-court violation. The offensive team can recover the ball legally, if the defensive team knocks the ball into the back-court.
 Defensive Rules:
The team on defense is the team without the basketball.
 1) Not to foul is the main rule for the defensive player. A foul is described as gaining inequitable advantage through physical contact. There is some interpretation that has to be made by the referee, but, in general, the defensive player may not physically contact the offensive player in a way that causes the offensive player to lose the ball or miss a shot.
 Rules for everyone
 1) Although the foul rule is described above as a defensive rule, it applies precisely the same to all players on the court including offensive players.
 2) Basketball players cannot kick the ball or hit it with their fist.
 3) No player can physically contact the basketball while it is travelling downward towards the basket or if it is on the rim. This is called goal-tending. (physically contacting the ball on the rim is licit in some games).
Every player on the court is subject to the same rules regardless the position they play. The positions in basketball are just for team basketball strategy and there are no positions in the rules.
 The Rules
Basketball is a team sport. Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular floor called the court, and there is a hoop at each end. The court is divided into two main sections by the mid-court line. If the offensive team puts the ball into play behind the mid-court line, it has ten seconds to get the ball over the mid-court line. If it doesn't, then the defense gets the ball. Once the offensive team gets the ball over the mid-court line, it can no longer have possession of the ball in the area in back of the line. If it does, the defense is awarded the ball.
The ball is moved down the court toward the basket by passing or dribbling. The team with the ball is called the offense. The team without the ball is called the defense. They try to steal the ball, contest shots, steal and deflect passes, and garner rebounds.
When a team makes a basket, they score two points and the ball goes to the other team. If a basket, or field goal, is made outside of the three-point arc, then that basket is worth three points. A free throw is worth one point. Free throws are awarded to a team according to some formats involving the number of fouls committed in a half and/or the type of foul committed. Fouling a shooter always results in two or three free throws being awarded the shooter, depending upon where he was when he shot. If he was beyond the three-point line, then he gets three shots. Other types of fouls do not result in free throws being awarded until a certain number have accumulated during a half. Once that number is reached, then the player who was fouled is awarded a '1-and-1' opportunity. If he makes his first free throw, he gets to attempt a second. If he misses the first shot, the ball is live on the rebound.
Each game is divided into sections. All levels have two halves. In college, each half is twenty minutes long. In high school and below, the halves are divided into eight (and sometimes, six) minute quarters. In the pros, quarters are twelve minutes long. There is a gap of several minutes between halves. Gaps between quarters are relatively short. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, then overtime periods of various lengths are played until a winner emerges.
Each team is assigned a basket or goal to defend. This means that the other basket is their scoring basket. At halftime, the teams switch goals. The game begins with one player from either team at center court. A referee will toss the ball up between the two. The player that gets his hands on the ball will tip it to a teammate. This is called a tip-off. In addition to stealing the ball from an opposing player, there are other ways for a team to get the ball.
 Fouls and Violations
FOULS
Personal fouls: Personal fouls include any type of illegal physical contact.
Hitting
Pushing
Slapping
Holding
Illegal pick/screen -- when an offensive player is moving. When an offensive player sticks out a limb and makes physical contact with a defender in an attempt to block the path of the defender.
Personal foul penalties: If a player is shooting while a being fouled, then he gets two free throws if his shot doesn't go in, but only one free throw if his shot does go in.
Three free throws are awarded if the player is fouled while shooting for a three-point goal and they miss their shot. If a player is fouled while shooting a three-point shot and makes it anyway, he is awarded one free throw. Thus, he could score four points on the play.
In-bounds - If fouled while not shooting, the ball is given to the team the foul was committed upon. They get the ball at the nearest side or baseline, out of bounds, and have 5 seconds to pass the ball onto the court.
One & one - If the team committing the foul has seven or more fouls in the game, then the player who was fouled is awarded one free throw. If he makes his first shot, then he is awarded another free throw.
Ten or more fouls - If the team committing the foul has ten or more fouls, then the fouled player receives two free throws.
Charging - An offensive foul that is committed when a player pushes or runs over a defensive player. The ball is given to the team that the foul was committed upon.
Blocking - Blocking is illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not establishing position in time to prevent an opponent's drive to the basket.
Flagrant foul - Violent contact with an opponent. This includes hitting, kicking, and punching. This type of foul results in free throws plus the offense retaining possession of the ball after the free throws.
Intentional foul - When a player makes physical contact with another player with no reasonable effort to steal the ball. It is a judgment call for the officials.
Technical foul - Technical foul. A player or a coach can commit this type of foul. It does not involve player contact or the ball but is instead about the 'manners' of the game. Foul language, obscenity, obscene gestures, and even arguing can be considered a technical foul, as can technical details regarding filling in the score-book improperly or dunking during warm-ups.
  VIOLATIONS
Walking/Traveling - Taking more than 'a step and a half' without dribbling the ball is traveling. Moving your pivot foot once you've stopped dribbling is traveling.
Carrying/palming - When a player dribbles the ball with his hand too far to the side of or, sometimes, even under the ball.
Double Dribble - Dribbling the ball with both hands on the ball at the same time or picking up the dribble and then dribbling again is a double dribble.
Held ball - Occasionally, two or more opposing players will gain possession of the ball at the same time. In order to avoid a prolonged and/or violent tussle, the referee stops the action and awards the ball to one team or the other on a rotating basis.
Goal-tending - If a defensive player interferes with a shot while it's on the way down toward the basket, while it's on the way up toward the basket after having touched the backboard, or while it's in the cylinder above the rim, it's goal-tending and the shot counts. If committed by an offensive player, it's a violation and the ball is awarded to the opposing team for a throw-in.
Back-court violation - Once the offense has brought the ball across the mid-court line, they cannot go back across the line during possession. If they do, the ball is awarded to the other team to pass in-bounds.
Time restrictions - A player passing the ball in-bounds has five seconds to pass the ball. If he does not, then the ball is awarded to the other team. Other time restrictions include the rule that a player cannot have the ball for more than five seconds when being closely guarded and, in some states and levels, shot-clock restrictions requiring a team to attempt a shot within a given time frame.

ABORSYON
// Julianna Jeri Mae Almodovar

  TADLAC LAKE (4:15 to 9:00pm-12:00am)
Tadlac Lake, also colloquially known as Alligator Lake, is a freshwater crater lake located in Barangay Tadlac, in the municipality of Los Baños of Laguna province in the Philippines. The lake-filled maar is located along the southern shore of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the country, with Alligator Lake protruding out of the shore of the larger lake. If not for its slightly-elevated crater rim, Alligator Lake would be wholly engulfed by Laguna de Bay.
Tadlac lake is also notable for its history of annual Lake overturns, locally called langal. This phenomenon, rare elsewhere but usually occurring in Tadlac lake during the cold months of December to February, is the result of trapped carbon dioxide (CO2) erupting from the deep layers of the lake towards the surface, leading to fish kills due to low levels of dissolved oxygen.[3](p6) This phenomenon was greatly heightened by the introduction of aquaculture to the lake in the mid-1980s, eventually leading to a massive and costly fishkill in 1999, which in turn led to the cessation of aquaculture activities on the lake.

Blog 101: Effects of Climate Change in our Environment
What are the effects of climate change in our environment? Let us first discuss what is climate change; According to Austrilian Academy of Science climate change, also known as global warming is a change in pattern of weather, and related changes in oceans, land surfaces and ice sheets, occuring overtime scales of decades or longer. Little did we know that some of our activites can cause global warming (e.g. burning platics). Global warming has a bad effects on our environment. We all know that Philippines is known for its agriculture. Rising temperature due to climate change may affects our crops. Hot temparature can dry our soild to be dry. Temperature changes can also lead to pests;some pest can reproduce and will stay longer. Those problems can lead to the death of our plants and sufferings to our dearest farmers. Climate change also has an impact on our air. According to greentrumble a recent study show that by the end of the century, more than half of the world’s population will be exposed to increasingly stagnant atmospheric conditions, with the tropics and subtropics bearing the brunt of the poor air quality. Lastly climate change affects our wildlife. According to some research climate change is one of the main reason of animals extinctions. Animals cant easily adopt changes; adapting to climate change may give them a hard time. ◎ SOLUTION ◎ Forego Fossil Fuels—The first challenge is eliminating the burning of coal, oil and, eventually, natural gas. This is perhaps the most daunting challenge as denizens of richer nations literally eat, wear, work, play and even sleep on the products made from such fossilized sunshine.  Infrastructure Upgrade—Buildings worldwide contribute around one third of all greenhouse gas emissions. Move Closer to Work—Transportation is the second leading source of greenhouse gas emissions. One way to dramatically curtail transportation fuel needs is to move closer to work, use mass transit, or switch to walking, cycling or some other mode of transport that does not require anything other than human energy. There is also the option of working from home and telecommuting several days a week. Consume Less—The easiest way to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions is simply to buy less stuff. Whether by forgoing an automobile or employing a reusable grocery sack, cutting back on consumption results in fewer fossil fuels being burned to extract, produce and ship products around the globe. Think green when making purchases. Be Efficient—A potentially simpler and even bigger impact can be made by doing more with less.  Stop Cutting Down Trees—Improved agricultural practices along with paper recycling and forest management—balancing the amount of wood taken out with the amount of new trees growing—could quickly eliminate this significant chunk of emissions. Unplug—Televisions, stereo equipment, computers, battery chargers and a host of other gadgets and appliances consume more energy when seemingly switched off, so unplug them instead. Purchasing energy-efficient gadgets can also save both energy and money—and thus prevent more greenhouse gas emissions. Future Fuels—Biofuels can have a host of negative impacts, from driving up food prices to sucking up more energy than they produce.  The solutions above offer the outline of a plan to personally avoid contributing to global warming. But should such individual and national efforts fail, there is another, potentially desperate solution. Reference: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/10-solutions-for-climate-change/
