Newcastle United – Always a club capable of self-destructing and never more so than under Mike Ashley
Tumblr media
If anybody asked you what will be happening at Newcastle United in 12 months time, what could you say?
You could honestly say that the extremes would be as far apart as fighting it out on the edges of the (Premier League) top six and being around about where Sunderland currently find themselves.
In the days of colour TV, Newcastle United has always been a club capable of self-destructing, but never more so than under Mike Ashley’s ownership.
If he did manage to take Newcastle down this time, it would be three relegations in nine Premier League seasons under Ashley, something which even Sky Sports would find it difficult to explain away…
The current positives at the club can be summed up by Rafa Benitez and fifty thousand match-going fans.
There isn’t anything else really, apart from St James Park.
Which is only really an asset when you have the fans to fill it.
Ironically, the two positives at NUFC are inextricably linked.
Rafa Benitez is still here because fifty thousand Newcastle fans want to spend time and money showing their support for him.
Fifty thousand Newcastle supporters still fill St James Park because Rafa Benitez believes in them.
The spell would be broken if either Rafa or the fans called time on Newcastle United, it would be a little bit like the Wizard of Oz.
The fantasy peeled away and showing that there was little of substance behind it.
Both Rafa Benitez and the Newcastle fans have a picture in their heads as to what could potentially happen at St James Park but first the headache of Mike Ashley needs to be removed.
Just imagine in 12 months time a Newcastle United with fifty thousand fans and Rafa Benitez but Mike Ashley nowhere to be seen.
You have to think that the club will go in one direction or the other in the next year and lets really really hope it is the right direction for once.

Aston Villa could miss out on Daniel Amartey after defender’s revival at Leicester City
Ghana defender Daniel Amartey
Aston Villa have faint hopes of signing Daniel Amartey from Leicester City after the Ghana international starting their last two matches.
His recent displays mean he could still have a part to play at the King Power Stadium.
Amartey impressed for Leicester, with his performance last weekend, as he helped the Foxes pick up a 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The 23-year-old’s display against Fleetwood Town in the FA Cup was not as eye catching, but he still played a role as the Foxes progressed to the next round.
And Villa may now find that Puel’s growing faith in Amartey means that they have to look at other targets.
Amartey had played just four Premier League matches prior to his appearances against Chelsea, but Puel may now see him as a valuable member of his squad, which could force Villa to look elsewhere.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan suited to Arsenal style, says Granit Xhaka
Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka thinks Manchester United player Henrikh Mkhitaryan would suit the style of play of the north London club.
Mkhitaryan, 28, is strongly linked to being involved in a cash-plus-player swap deal, with Man United buying Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, allowing the Armenian international to move to the capital.
Although the deal is yet to be finalised, it has been confirmed by both clubs that Mkhitaryan could be on his way to the Emirates.
Xhaka, 25, believes that the Man Utd player would be a fantastic fit for the club, with his creativity and directness adaptable to the way Arsenal play.
Granit Xhaka and Henrikh Mkhitaryan both previously played in the Bundesliga
Xhaka, according to ESPN, said: “I read that in 2009 he said that he likes Arsenal.
“I’m sure the style of play here would suit him. Every player has their own qualities. He is a great footballer, so let’s just see what happens.
“It was tough to play against him. To be honest, I would rather have played alongside him. He is a player who is obviously very good and has lots of good qualities as well.”
Arsenal boss Wenger did nothing to dampen the speculation regarding the potential exchange at this week’s press conference, stating that Mkhitaryan is both a great footballer but also a fan of the club.
“We played many times against him when he was at Dortmund,” Wenger said.
“He certainly appreciated the quality of our game and the way we play football. That’s why certainly he loves the club as well.”
Both clubs have until 31st January to finalise the transfer before the transfer window closes. United take on Burnley this weekend while Arsenal face Palace. While Wenger has stated he will continue to use Sanchez, Mkhitaryan will not be include in United’s squad on Saturday.

Loris Karius on ambitions as Liverpool’s No. 1 and his relationship with Simon Mignolet
German reporter Ibrahim Naber met up with Loris Karius this week to discuss his new role as Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Naber met with Karius in Liverpool this week for German publication WELT and has kindly provided a translation of the interview for This Is Anfield.
The 24-year-old speaks about his relationship with Simon Mignolet, taking his chance as the Reds’ No.1, how Jurgen Klopp has changed the club, and his ambitions at Liverpool.
Karius about his new role being No 1:
“I talked to Jurgen Klopp before our match against Manchester City. He told me that I was going to play.
“I worked hard for this opportunity and I want to show now that it was the right decision. I’m happy that the manager trusts [me].”
Karius about the previous situation (sharing the job with Mignolet):
“I don’t want to call it being number 1A or number 1B but the situation wasn’t satisfying for me.
“Of course, I wanted to play every week. That’s my aspiration. But I knew that I`d get a new chance. Now I want to take this chance.”
Karius on his relation with Mignolet:
“It’s a professional relationship. We train together and respect each other. I don’t have any problem with him.
“In general I think that, nowadays, there are no such hostile relations between goalkeepers anymore. That’s maybe different than in the past.”
  Karius on Klopp:
“We have a good relationship. I hold him in high regard as trainer and a person. You can always talk to him. He motivates us, especially in difficult situations and he helps me to get better every day.
“Before the summer break, I talked to him and he explained his perspective. I know that Klopp was always convinced of my skills. I always felt his trust. I never felt uneasy.”
Karius on how Klopp has changed Liverpool:
“I think he sets everyone an example of German virtues. I mean things like punctuality, discipline and team spirit. But he also focuses on a modern training philosophy and the right diet. In these things, he changed a lot.
“Klopp demands a lot from us, and he is on fire himself all the time. He works very closely with the team and he conducts every training.
“He is a very emotional coach who matches perfectly with this club.”
Karius about Liverpool’s ambitions:
“I understand the desire of the fans to win titles. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen for so many years.
“Our development is very positive. We try to improve in the Premier League and we are still competing in FA Cup and the Champions League.
“It’s our goal to stay in the competitions as long as possible. To dream about the title is not forbidden, but it’s still a long way.”

Revealed: Pastore’s agent is in Milan
19 January at 18:50
Javier Pastore could well be on his way to Inter, if the latest reports from Canal+ are anything to go by.
The Ligue 1 star’s agent, Marcelo Simonian, is in Milan, writes Olivier Tallaron. The journalist confirms that Simonian is in the Lombard capital, which sounds like he is talking to the Nerazzurri about a possible move.
Back in December Pastore revealed that his agent had been speaking to the San Siro side, but that no ideal had been reached.
Pastore, 28, has scored four Ligue 1 goals since the start of the season, but has found himself being benched more and more as the glut of talents at the club’s disposal – including new arrivals Neymar and Mbappe’ – have left him with limited starting time, and skipping the big games.
Yet, despite club captain Thiago Silva recently saying that Pastore wanted to leave, the Argentine issued a denial recently, saying that ” I have never talked to Thiago Silva about my problems and my future at the club. I have never put any pressure on anybody. This is not my style.”

Klopp doubts City dropped out of Sanchez race over money
Date published: Friday 19th January 2018 2:32
Jurgen Klopp doubts that Manchester City abandoned their interest in Alexis Sanchez “because of money”.
City were expected to push to sign Sanchez this month, but have been replaced in the running by bitter rivals Manchester United.
Sanchez is now days away from moving to Old Trafford, with the claim being that they are willing to match the figures demanded by Arsenal and Sanchez, whereas City were not.
One man even believes ‘treacherous turncoat’ Sanchez betrayed Guardiola, but Klopp doubts money was City’s issue.
“I could really create headlines here, hey? But I won’t. It’s not my cup of tea,” he replied when asked about the Chilean.
“We have had a big transfer (Virgil van Dijk). Is it fixed already with Alexis? I have nothing to say about the numbers, but I can’t imagine that Manchester City would leave the race because of money!
“Alexis Sanchez makes sense for pretty much each team in the world, because he’s a really good player – bring him in!
“We are not in for him, so that’s the only thing I am interested in!”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan would suit Arsenal way of playing – Granit Xhaka
ESPN’s Alison Bender and Mattias Karen discuss all the main talking points from Arsene Wenger’s press conference ahead of their match with Crystal Palace.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says it’s likely Alexis Sanchez could join Manchester United, but insists anything could happen in the transfer market.
From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows at Man United, is the path clear for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to part ways with Jose Mourinho?
Granit Xhaka has backed Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan to be a success at Arsenal if he joins in exchange for Alexis Sanchez.
Mkhitaryan has struggled to make an impact at United since joining in 2016 and is set to move to the Emirates Stadium with Sanchez going the other way.
Xhaka, who played against Mkhitaryan during his time in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach, said: “I read that in 2009 he said that he likes Arsenal.
“I’m sure the style of play here would suit him. Every player has their own qualities. He is a great footballer, so let’s just see what happens.
“It was tough to play against him. To be honest, I would rather have played alongside him. He is a player who is obviously very good and has lots of good qualities as well.”
Henrikh Mkhitarayan appears increasingly likely to join Arsenal.
Xhaka was referring to a UEFA interview with Mkhitaryan during his spell at Armenian side Pyunik in which he praised Wenger and said Arsenal were his “favourite team” and he would “want to play there one day.”
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s clash against Crystal Palace, Wenger said Mkhitaryan, who turns 29 on Monday, saw how good Arsenal were during their Champions League clashes.
“We played many times against him when he was at Dortmund,” Wenger said.
“He certainly appreciated the quality of our game and the way we play football. That’s why certainly he loves the club as well.”
Speaking to Sky Sports, Xhaka also praised the attitude shown by Sanchez, saying: “We all see that he always gives everything on the pitch.
“He wants to win all the time and obviously last season he scored well over 20 goals and this season he is scoring goals as well.
“To be honest he is someone I have got big respect for, he is a very nice guy. He can be serious but he has a playful side too where you can have fun with him.”

Mijatovic: I don’t see Ronaldo as being sad in the Champions League, but I do see it in LaLiga
En Español
The 2017/18 season hasn’t been one of Marcelo‘s best, something which former Real Madrid player Pedrag Mijatovic is putting down to a lack of competition at left-back.
Even though Los Blancos brought in Theo Hernandez last summer, the Montenegrin simply doesn’t think the youngster is good enough yet to make the Brazilian fear for his place.
“Marcelo has been at Real Madrid for 10 or 11 years and is surely one of the best left-backs in the world,” he said in a lengthy interview with Radio MARCA.
“But a lot of players lack some more ambition once they’ve won everything.
“There is also a lack of competition.
“You must bring in players who make the starter think a lot [about his starting place].
“Relaxation is a very dangerous thing.
“When you don’t have much competition, it’s dangerous.
“With respect to the others, he doesn’t have the competition to feel worried.”
Mijatovic spoke about Real Madrid’s poor season in general, even if he didn’t have many explanations.
“You need to have more information and to be on the inside [to know what’s going on with Real Madrid],” he started.
“We are all worried after these poor results.
“They must find solutions.
“They need to look each other in the eyes and take responsibility.
“The team isn’t doing well in front of goal in the league and the Copa del Rey, although it’s another story in the Champions League.”
The topic of conversation moved onto Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract situation and on whether or not he should stay or go.
“The situation needs to be well evaluated at the end of this season,” Mijatovic said.
“These things must be talked about and if he is not happy then he has to say so.
“I don’t see Ronaldo as being sad in the Champions League, but I do see it in LaLiga.
“That has nothing to do with his wages.
“Maybe he’s just more motivated by the Champions League.”
As for the possible signing of Neymar, Mijatovic sees no reason why the Brazilian couldn’t play alongside Ronaldo.
“Personally, I love Neymar as a player,” he said.
“He has magic and would win over a lot of Real Madrid fans, or almost all of them.
“If there was a chance to sign him, I’d be the first person to say yes, but I don’t know if it’s possible.
“If Neymar was able to get on well with Lionel Messi, then there’s no reason he couldn’t get on well with Ronaldo.”
As for Zinedine Zidane, Mijatovic said he hopes the coach stays and that it’ll be a sad day when he goes.

Conte should replace Wenger at Arsenal, claims Carragher
Antonio Conte would be the ideal replacement for Arsene Wenger when the veteran Frenchman leaves his post as Arsenal manager, according to Jamie Carragher.
Wenger signed a new two-year deal at the Emirates Stadium in May, but has not won the league title since the 2003-04 season, while the Gunners are on a five-game winless run in all competitions and in danger of missing out on Champions League qualification for the second year running.
Conte – reportedly frustrated with Chelsea’s transfer policy – also penned fresh terms at the end of last season, although they did not extend his tenure and he has consistently been linked with a range of other managerial positions, including the Italian national team and Serie A underachievers AC Milan.
And Carragher believes Arsenal should put Conte at the top of their wishlist for when Wenger eventually decides to end his 21-year reign at the helm.
“If Conte’s situation is precarious – the Chelsea hierarchy ambivalent on his future and Conte increasingly frustrated by the structure of the club – there will be a long queue for his services,” Carragher wrote in a column for the Telegraph.
“I could imagine Real Madrid considering Conte as a replacement for Zinedine Zidane, whose position looks vulnerable. The Italian national team would beg him to go back after their failure to qualify for the World Cup.
Another hard working week at Cobham.
Next stop, Brighton! pic.twitter.com/gNJbxSMrEI
— Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) January 19, 2018
“There is talk of him returning to Italian football but having managed the national team and led Juventus to three Serie A titles in a row, would heading home at this stage of his career be so appealing? He has nothing more to prove in his own country.
“There is one club in particular, much closer to his current home, I feel should be monitoring developments more than others; a club desperately in need of Conte’s persona, who would send a rocket through every department of their institution and instantly change perceptions. That club is Arsenal.
“I can imagine no more suitable replacement for Arsene Wenger than Conte.
“It would be one of the most astute managerial appointments in Premier League history.
“Arsenal are still stuck in a cycle of mediocrity they have been unable to escape for several years. I will never lose respect for Wenger – his legacy in English football is preserved and he will always be considered one of the all-time greats – but I said last year his time was coming to an end and nothing has changed.
“Conte is too good for Chelsea to let go. They should be desperately trying to keep him, not only because he will bring more success to the club, but to ensure he does not come back to haunt them when he returns with a rival.
“If the Chelsea board cannot see that, Arsenal should do everything in their power to ensure it is a short Tube ride to his next destination.”

‘It’s annoying’ – West Ham fans not totally satisfied with swoop for 25-year-old
Tumblr media
1 minute read 19/1/2018 | 06:00pm
West Ham United manager David Moyes has less than two weeks to find a new midfielder to add to the squad.
The East London outfit have been linked to numerous players in the media, and the latest speculation centres on Italy.
According to Sky Sports News, the Hammers remain interested in Inter Milan’s Joao Mario, who is believed to have initially waved away the prospect of signing for the Premier League club.
Now, though, the Portugal Euro 2016 winner is said to be more open-minded about a switch.
The report claims that Inter are willing to offload the midfielder on a loan deal that will include an option to buy.
Mario joined the Serie A side from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2016, but has struggled to hold down a regular place in the team.
This season, the 25-year-old has started just five league matches for the Milan-based outfit.
The latest reports about West Ham’s pursuit have got fans talking on Twitter.
Sounds like the Carvalho deal. This got a little closer today, things moved a bit nearer, definitely interested……..off! Hope it doesn’t go like that though, but not holding my breath

Joao Mario isn’t good for Inter Milan.
We’re West Ham United.
He’s a better footballer than all of our central midfielders by a million miles.
He’d go straight into our XI.
Some of our fans are never happy. https://t.co/741N9MVWtu

I-League goalkeeper makes sensationally bad blunder against Shillong Lajong
Published
In the eighth minute of the I-League clash on Friday, Churchill Brothers’ Nigerian left-back Osagie aimlessly lumped the ball forward towards the penalty box.
To everyone’s surprise, his effort somehow ended up in the back of the net.
That’s because goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa, sporting a particularly dodgy haircut, completely misjudged the ball’s flight and ended up feebly palming the strike into his own goal.
Cue some… er, overexuberant celebrations from Osagie.
Here is a goal scored from inside the centre circle by a guy called Monday playing for an Indian team called Churchill Brothers, thanks to a howler from an opposition keeper with what seems to be a flattened porcupine on his head and the word ‘HERO’ taunting him in the background pic.twitter.com/JNEAU1Ypyx

Midfielder Britto PM (yes, that’s a name apparently) fired in Churchill Brothers’ second from range in the 76th minute to ensure the hosts clinched all three points at the Tilak Maidan Stadium.

Everton interested in signing Premier League winning striker
By Jamie Brown Created on: January 19, 2018 5:30 pm Last Updated: January 19, 2018 5:30 pm
Everton are interested in signing Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, whom manager Sam Allardyce is a ‘long-term admirer’, according to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett.
Although the Blues are unlikely to bid for the 31-year-old, given his age, Allardyce is very keen on adding the player to his squad.
The Foxes are also reluctant to lose Vardy this month and are excepted to resist all offers made for the former Premier League winner.
Sky Sports’ report
#ssn understands #efc are interested in signing #lcfc Jamie Vardy, but are unlikely to bid in this window. Sam Allardyce is a long-time admirer of Vardy, but has already spent almost £50m on Tosun and Walcott. Leicester would resist any attempt to lure Vardy away.
— Rob Dorsett (@RobDorsettSky) January 19, 2018
Age concerns
Despite the former England boss Allardyce being a keen admirer of Vardy, the club have concerns over whether paying a large sum for an ageing player is a wise move.
Earlier this week, Theo Walcott arriving from Arsenal, adding to the signing of Cenk Tosun, took the club’s total spend to nearly £50m for this month.
Allardyce, in his press conference, indicated that the club are unlikely to bring in any more players this month.
He said:
“No, I don’t think so (making more signings).
The squad is too big. There are 33 players here at the moment and from my point of view reducing those squads numbers is important for me.
Aaron Lennon has today been linked with Newcastle United as well as Burnley and Davy Klaassen has been mentioned as a potential Fenerbahce target.
We don’t know who those players (leaving Everton) are because you are waiting for other clubs to show an interest.
But moving a few players on is the order for us.”
Lennon to Burnley
Both the BBC and Sky Sports claim that Burnley have agreed a deal to sign Everton and former Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon.
The fee remains undisclosed and personal terms have been agreed, the player is now just waiting to undergo a medical.

Former Arsenal and Man Utd striker Van Persie returns to Feyenoord
Tumblr media
Robin van Persie is returning to his roots at Feyenoord after negotiating the termination of his contract at Fenerbahce.
Now 34 years of age, the move sees the experienced frontman head back to where it all began.
Van Persie is a product of the academy system at Feyenoord, with the Rotterdam native having first linked up with the club as a 16-year-old back in 1999.
Related
He would spend just three years as part of the senior fold at his home-town club before securing a switch to Arsenal in 2004.
Eight seasons with the Gunners delivered over 130 goals and an FA Cup triumph, but he was lured away to Manchester United in 2012 – in a move similar to that currently being mooted for Alexis Sanchez.
Van Persie helped the Red Devils to land the Premier League title in his debut campaign, along with a second Golden Boot of his career, but left for Turkey in 2015.
He has remained a regular source of goals while with Fenerbahce, and has also taken his impressive haul of caps with the Netherlands to 102, but has been allowed to head home after slipping down the pecking order.
Feyenoord are delighted to have put a deal in place, with terms set to be officially signed on Monday.
The reigning Eredivisie champions will be hoping that a familiar face proves to be a talismanic presence, just as Dirk Kuyt was when returning to the club from Fenerbahce.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side currently sit fifth in the Dutch top-flight, 14 points adrift of leaders PSV.

Manchester City will be looking to get back to winning ways when they host Newcastle on Saturday evening.

They have lost their chance of completing an ‘Invincible’ season, but Guardiola will want to ensure his team keep their nine-point lead at the top of the table.
Newcastle have won just two of their last 14 Premier League matches, and many expect City to defeat Rafa Benitez’s side with ease.
But who will Guardiola select against the Magpies? Click the right arrow, above, to see talkSPORT’s predicted Newcastle XI listed in squad number order…
