September Midnight
Lyric night of the lingering Indian Summer,
Shadowy fields that are scentless but full of
singing,
Never a bird, but the passionless chant of insects,
Ceaseless, insistent.
The grasshopper’s horn, and far-off, high in the
maples,
The wheel of a locust leisurely grinding the
silence
Under a moon waning and worn, broken,
Tired with summer.
Let me remember you, voices of little insects,
Weeds in the moonlight, fields that are tangled
with asters,
Let me remember, soon will the winter be on
us,
Snow-hushed and heavy.
Over my soul murmur your mute benediction,
While I gaze, O fields that rest after harvest,
As those who part look long in the eyes they
lean to,
Lest they forget them.
Poet: Sara Teasdale, 1914

Fun With Math & Home Economics, for the Dazed & Confused
Saving $300 every month means in 4 months $1200 will be saved; in 12 months, $3600 will be saved.
If a paycheck is $1,000, putting away $150 is 15%, which is below the recommended 20%, but if 20% is too much of a stretch for the sake of home essentials, start at 15%, or start at 10%, but starting is the most important thing especially for blue collar households.
Where does an extra $300 come from in a month?
Well, spending $5 on coffee 20 days a month is $100; spending $10 on coffee 20 days a month is $200.
Spending $30 eating out 5 times a month is $150; spending $30 eating out 10 times a month is $300.
Spending $20 on entertainment 10 times a month is $200.
Spending $50 on clothes/pampering once a week for 4 weeks is $200.
Spending $10 on wine/beer 10 times a month is $100.
Avoiding overdraft fees at $30+ for each overdraft saves money too.
Spending money on cigarettes/snuff and alcohol not only wastes money but it’s not a benefit to one’s health or everyone in a home. I’m shocked when people are struggling financially with kids and still smoke cigarettes – that is robbing the children of what they need, not just financially but emotionally should the parent become ill from their poor health habits.
People have more money than they realize if they manage it right and make better choices, but frivolous purchases on food, entertainment, and shopping can do more damage than people may realize especially if they aren’t tracking their spending. And I write from experience.
I’m not writing as a millionaire financial expert who has lived the good life for so long they don’t remember what the struggle was like, or they haven’t lived my struggle.
I’m writing as a former white collar professional and a current blue collar housewife who is in the outdated wood-paneled trenches every day and working to get out of it; I’ve changed my habits and my husband’s habits too; if a woman can turn a man vegetarian/vegan, a woman can also turn a man into a financially aware person; we now have savings stashed away on top of money left over every month for when unforeseen expenses pop up.
We had to buy a new convection oven last week (our last one was purchased in 2007) and we didn’t even touch our savings because of having extra money in the bank from not spending an entire paycheck every two weeks.
Handling money responsibly also reduces the amount of stress and arguing in a household, which benefits a marriage beyond belief and takes away the need for tobacco/alcohol to relax.
If we can do it, others can do it too.
A year from now you will wish you started today.
