Response to Mother's Basement’s video on Kakegurui
https://youtu.be/N2L4eFB6l98
(Hope you enjoy)
Honestly, when reading the manga, there Is some bit of thrill rushing through my blood. I wouldn't say that Kakegurui is completely boring at all. (He keeps mentioning aspects of Kakegurui that the fanbase does not 100% take seriously at all and then he compares these aspects with an anime which does these aspects very well, so of course Kakegurui in contrast would seem dull).
He's comparing Kakegurui to an anime like Kaiji which I have to say it's not fair. Kaiji is a very story based anime and the gambling aspect reflects off that. Whilst Kakegurui is just viewers watching a hot anime chick trying to gamble her way into insanity.
This is exactly the reason why you shouldn't compare the two. In Kaiji the story adds the extra spice which makes It a lot a better of a "gambling" anime (admittedly).  But you have to look at Kakegurui objectively to enjoy it rather than comparing It to other anime which is obviously completely different from Kakegurui.
I know he keep saying Kakegurui is a bad "gambling" anime, but I thought that was pretty straightforward. He kept saying that the stakes that have been bet on the gambles of Kakegurui is nonchalant and boring, but I don't think they are. I know that was his opinion but i'm wondering if some people will understand from my perspective as well. So what I'm trying to say is that the stakes in the bets in Kakegurui is supposed to reflect off of the characters, unlike in Kaiji we as viewers can relate to the consequences of losing gambles which are presented in that anime, for example pain, money etc. Kakegurui does a great job in expressing all of their characters, so immediately consequences of losing a bet such as ripping off nails, not having anything to do with a certain someone (president and secretary),  not being able to gamble ever again has actual meaning behind them because they are highly related to the characters we see. So suddenly we feel adrenaline pumping through our vains when seeing the characters risk their own cherished happiness in a very interesting gambling game as losing these gambles will hit hard for the apposing character, due to how much the opponent's motives derives from whatever the character has bet. So seeing them lose the bet sparks some excitement, as their situation has turned a complete 180. This doesn't get repetitive either as each gambling game is very interesting. In Kaiji, we can relate to the consequences of losing a bet and being in an awful predicament, and THEN in turn how we can relate to the character. But rather in Kakegurui we can relate to the characters straight away because we will have a strong emotion (whether if that is if you hate or sympathise towards the character) relating to the character due to how the bets that have been placed have an immense connection to the character, so the stakes themselves have a lot of symbolism to the characters that Yumeko is facing off with.
He also talks about that whatever is betted in the gamble has no meaning to our main character; Yumeko, that's fair enough. But again, we have to look at it objectively, the main character is simply an insane gambling addict; nothing more, nothing less and that's exactly why we love the character. The joy is seeing her crush her opponents and strip them off their cherished bets from impossible odds, and seeing the struggle of the opposing side is the suspense that exists within Kakegurui.
So to summarise, Kakegurui isn't anime/manga you should compare, especially to something like Kaiji, as they are objectively just not the same. One anime is about a bit more realistic to the aspect of gambling and the other is just supposed to be a pure aura of insanity of an anime character. You watch Kakegurui to see how much more insane the main character can be, not for the gambling. I thought that was obvious. If we see any other character from that anime (Kakegurui) gamble and take the lead role we would be bored as fuck and that is exactly why Kakegurui is incomparable to an anime like Kaiji.
So yes, as a gambling anime Kakegurui sucks  balls, but as an anime/manga, Kakegurui is very good. So technically I agree with the idea of his video but I do not agree with many things he has said. And yes I know that technically the video is about how bad the anime is as a "gambling" anime, but there were some implications that almost suggests that he thinks that the anime itself was bad due to his reasons which why he thinks gambling aspects of Kakegurui is bad, which is completely fine as it is his opinion. So I just made this response and hope anyone who has read this now know a little more of my perspective and possibly even agreeing with some things that I have said.
P.S. I know that some people say that the series markets itself as a "gambling" anime so people shouldn't have the excuse to say "No one watches Kakegurui for the gambling". But that doesn't necessarily mean that we as viewers have to view the anime as a gambling anime, and most of the fanbase don't as they understand that what's good about this anime isn't because of it's gambling genre, but rather how the gambling theme is used as a tool to just let all of the interesting characters in the anime flourish and develop or depicted in such a way that we viewers find the anime fun to watch.
