A closeup from Gustav Cederström’s painting “Karl XII:s likfärd”. I have always wondered what was in the thoughts of the old, tired soldiers, karolinerna, while they were carrying the dead king home from the fortress in Halden. The exhausted, ragged soldier at left has so sad eyes, as the light has been shut down for good. Seen enough, felt enough, suffered enough. Today in Swedish history we mark the day during the siege of Viborg the Swedes blew the shit out of Russian soldiers using some sort of explosive mixture, making the Russians retreat, who feared the Swedes were allied with the devil.
