Based in New York State, Greg Gerkens is an educator and school administrator who most recently served as assistant principal for an educational cooperative of 51 Long Island school districts established to provide educational leadership and other support through shared services and instructional programs. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder, affects roughly one in every 54 children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A neurodivergent feature, each individual falls on a unique point on the spectrum.
The developmental alterations of Autism begin during pregnancy and have hereditary factors. Medical professionals can diagnose it as early as 18 to 24 months, highlighting the importance of early intervention for better long-term results. Then, early behavioral therapies can help individuals acquire speech and social interaction skills.
Since ASD presents as a spectrum, individuals differ in their social and communication abilities and strengths and difficulties. However, three key symptoms exist for all.
Firstly, many individuals have difficulties with social connections. Individuals may feel uncomfortable in social situations, experiencing nervousness and feeling out of place owing to the bombardment of their senses, among other causes.
Next, unusual responses and communication problems signal the disorder. Autistic people may have difficulty analyzing the impact of their words or actions on others, resulting in bluntness. Individuals also experience difficulties concentrating during talks and interpreting messages.
The third symptom is cognitive impairment along with sensory sensitivities, which include repeated activities like head rocking for comfort and relaxation.
People with ASD may also have sleep abnormalities, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, and digestive problems. Addressing these problems can improve the general well-being of people on the spectrum.

Scientists Narrow Down How Life May Have Originated on Earth

The foundations of life on Earth are molecules containing carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, and nucleic acids. In early 2023, German researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen published research in which they simulated a variety of conditions that may have existed on the planet at the time life originated. In particular, they investigated the likelihood of specific chemical reactions taking place.
In their experiment, the researchers placed CO2 in a heated autoclave system pressurized between nine and 45 bars. This is considerably greater than the 1.013 bar atmospheric pressure experienced at sea level today (but significantly less than the 93 bar or Venus. The latter planet is believed to resemble Hadean Earth, of 4.54 billion years and 4 billion years ago when life emerged).
In addition, temperatures in the 150°C to 300°C range were tested, with water and hydrogen gasses added and subtracted to create wet and dry conditions. Minerals thought to be present on Hadean Earth were also added, along with samples of crushed stony meteorites, iron meteorites, and volcanic ash.
The findings were that either space-born particles brought to Earth as meteorites or volcanic particles on Earth could have enabled the conversion of CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere into organic life’s precursor molecules. Given the right conditions, both volcanic ash and iron-rich meteorite particles promote the conversion of CO2 into aldehydes, alcohols, and hydrocarbons. These could have undergone subsequent reactions that converted them into the building blocks of life, DNA, and RNA.

Fundraising Special Olympics through Polar Plunge
Greg Gerkens earned his certificate of advanced study in educational leadership from the College of Saint Rose, Albany, in 2013. Alongside his core career as an educator in special education, he enjoys fishing, kites, meditation, and yoga. Greg Gerkens is also passionate about fundraising for community initiatives and ardently takes part in the Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics. The annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics aims to raise funds and create awareness for the Special Olympics event and the athletes. The participants must first seek cash pledges from friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues to book a spot. The organizers then direct the proceeds to aid the athletes to train, live healthier lives, achieve their athletic objectives, and foster more inclusion in the community. On the actual event day, typically over the winter, the participants plunge in an icy body of water near them, typically a lake or sea. Several other countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom (UK), Netherlands, and New Zealand, have versions of the plunge, though for different reasons altogether. For example, participants in Canada, the UK, and the Netherlands plunge to celebrate the New Year. At the same time, the Antarctica version serves as a rite of passage for incoming scientists and visitors to Scott Base.

Mars’ Unique Geology Results in Pulverized Rock
Based in New York, Greg Gerkens has taught courses such as earth science and living environment in high school settings. Greg Gerkens maintains a strong interest in geology, astronomy, and natural phenomenon across the cosmos. With NASA's Perseverance on a mission on the surface of Mars, the rover encountered an unexpected challenge collecting rock samples. One of its assignments was to drill a hole in a rock and place the resulting sample in a collection tube. When the sample tube came up empty, scientists scrambled to come up with a reason. Finally, they developed a theory that the rock must have pulverized, reflecting the unique geologic makeup of Martian rocks. The surface of Mars is dusty and rocky, with soil high in perchlorate compounds (chlorine) and toxic to life as we know it. While Mars does have some volcanic basaltic rocks like those found in Idaho and Hawaii, the red planet does not have active plate tectonics. That means that the vast majority of rocks are relatively basic in composition and basaltic, similar to those in the Earth’s oceans. On the Jezero Crater floor that the Perseverance explores, rocks tend to be of a soft sedimentary type that generates powders when drilled. There are rare exceptions, extremely hard rocks that are challenging to drill into as well. This obstacle will have to be overcome, as a prime mission is to ultimately transport usable rock samples back to Earth to prove past life on Mars.

With water once having been believed to be unique to planet Earth, recent discoveries point to its presence on a number of icy planets. One example has recently been uncovered by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, which is exploring the dwarf planet Ceres.
Located between Jupiter and Mars, Ceres is approximately 590 miles across and represents the largest object by far within the Asteroid Belt. With its neighbors characterized by rocky terrain, Ceres is an icy planet that contains the most water of any world within the inner solar system, beyond Earth.
With Dawn having explored Ceres over the past five years, researchers studying features around newly formed craters believe they have detected signs of a substantial body of salty water below the planet’s surface. This is reinforced by gravitational field variations, which seem to indicate a horizontal reservoir of briny liquid that extends to depths of as much as 25 miles below surface ice sheets.
Astronomers believe that the main reason the water has not frozen has to do with its extreme saltiness, which results in a lower freezing point. With NASA's New Horizons mission suggesting that Pluto may have similar characteristics, some believe that icy ocean worlds are relatively common features on dwarf planets that could potentially harbor some form of extraterrestrial life.

Defensive End Kerry Wynn to Stay with the Giants
Greg Gerkens served as the assistant principal for Eastern Suffolk BOCES in Centereach, New York, from 2013 to 2016. Outside of his professional life, Greg Gerkens supports the New York Giants NFL team. In mid-April, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported via Twitter that Giants defensive end (DE) Kerry Wynn will stay with the team. Concerns over a departure began earlier in the month when the DE went to visit the Patriots in New England, though Wynn did not receive an offer from the team. The 2017-2018 season will mark Wynn’s fourth season with the Giants after signing a restricted free agent tender. Last season, Wynn only played a total of 17 snaps, with Jason Pierre-Paul and Olivier Vernon doing most of the heavy lifting when it came to defensive snaps. Wynn is set to attend and partake in the Giants’ conditioning program during the offseason. His tender is reportedly worth $1.797 million.

The Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics

Each winter, individuals across the United States take part in the Polar Plunge, a fundraising event for the Special Olympics in which participants take a plunge into ice-cold water. Prior to the event individuals seek pledges from donors, with the minimum amount for participation set at $100. On the day of the Polar Plunge, participants arrive at the changing area with a bathing suit and a pair of shoes for entering the water. While some participants submerse themselves completely in the water, the requirement is simply that participants get in the water, even if only at ankle level. Participants can expect a large crowd full of energy to support them as they take the plunge.
