Scarlet Shadow, Gregg Chadwick
In Bruges, on a recent journey, I found myself entranced by the skin tones in the almost 600 year old paintings of the Flemish masters. This alchemy between pigment and subject prompted the 20th century modernist Willem de Kooning to declare “flesh was the reason that oil paint was invented.” The Flemish masters Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling began their paintings with a light colored underpainting upon which succesive layers of glowing transclucent oil paints were applied. Light reflects through these lustrous layers allowing us to peer into the surface of the painting. In this way oil paint seems to breathe. My painting “Scarlet Shadow” adapts this Flemish technique onto a large scale portrait.

Venice, Gregg Chadwick
This powerful man led our protest march from outside the Google headquarters building in Venice, California to the HBO Corporate offices in Santa Monica to focus attention on their divisive and racist proposed new show “Confederate”. My painting was inspired by the portrait studies of black Union soldiers created as studies for the Shaw memorial by Augustus Saint Gauden. This memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth Regiment was referenced in the film “Glory”. Thanks to these proud soldiers and their sacrifice against injustice, our country still stands. Thanks to the proud man in my painting, “Confederate” will not be made. Exhibited and sold at Saatchi Art’s “The Other Art Fair” in March 2018.

Between Worlds (Chicago), Gregg Chadwick
My oil on linen painting “Between Worlds (Chicago)” was inspired by the industrial design of Raymond Loewy and the spirit of adventure that lies at the heart of the United States. Two vehicles designed by Loewy stand side by side in a rail yard with the Chicago skyline behind. Glistening in black, the streamlined Pennsylvania Railroad “Broadway Limited” shares the scene with a gold 1938 Studebaker President.

A Poem of Red, Gregg Chadwick
On a blissful evening in the shadow of the Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, three figures in crimson move across the surface of my painting entitled “A Poem of Red.” The blur of memory speaks across time.

Unclear
“So many people live their lives not knowing the real and exact reasons why they live. When you live life with a blurry vision, you live a blurry life. Vision is life, and life without vision is a dead life.”
