One more from the ICA. The current exhibitions there are really fabulous and oh so timely! Covering immigration, sense of self and a multitude of other current topics, I can’t remember the last time I felt so moved with such a range of emotions in a museum. . I’ve been a fan of Nick Cave’s for years. His multimedia pieces explore the intersection of fine art, craft, performance art and material culture. Soundsuits (2009) is a full body costume combining flea market finds, discarded figurines and other treasures into a kitschy aesthetic. . Imagining the absence of identity-the weight of accumulation-and a protective second skin are all reflected in his work. A good safari experience is about so much more than just the animals. Each of the camps we have visited emphasized the importance of connecting with the local community. Learning about the social Grévy zebra-the most endangered of the 3 species-has been great fun in nature’s classroom. Did you know zebra’s are naturally black, and the white stripes are an addition? Those stripes act as an air cooling system, reflecting light in different ways. They also confuse bugs as well as lions moving in for a meal. Is it any surprise a group is known as a dazzle!
