Moon Phases in Hoodoo
Tumblr media
It’s really common to see modern witchcraft correspondences for the moon phases, but rarely or never for hoodoo. Frequently the full moon is associated with “light magic” and the new moon with “dark magic” using the classic racist terminology we’re all too familiar with. We also live in a world where books on working the roots that are actually written by black authors are a somewhat rare find, and Lucky Mojo is one of the first Google hits for almost every hoodoo-related search you might make.
So, Spirit Roots presents… the moon phases for root workers! An Africana guide to the lunar cycle. Remember, you don’t have to cast the “right” spell at the “right” time, it’s just a useful boost to follow the moon’s patterns when it feels right to do so or works for your path. Listen to your ancestors, and trust your intuition on it!

This is definitely something I’m going to have to do. I recently got a new deck that I would love to break in
Tumblr media
A 31 Day Tarot Challenge for The Month of October, Inspired by The Major Arcana.
I’m bringing this challenge back because it did a lot of good for a lot of people.
If you participated in the past, I invite you to participate again, with the intent of helping you see how much you’ve grown.
If you’ve never taken this challenge, I believe it will provide you with a great amount of personal insight and growth.
Each question has been written with the hopes of helping you gain greater insight into yourself, and the world around you.
Remember, each question may be answered with as many or as few cards as you feel are required. Some answers will easily come from one card, some may require several cards.
I encourage you to photograph your cards and journal your answers with the tag,
#autumntarot.

1. As I begin this journey into self, where would it be best serving for me to initially focus my energy?
2. What can I expect to creatively manifest within the upcoming days ahead?
3. In order to have prosperity, and a nurturing love for self and others, where should I focus my energy?
4. As I gain greater stability and balance, what should I remember to guard myself from?
5. Is there anything I am considering that I could perhaps make a better decision on later?
6. What is it that my soul craves the most right now?
7. As I draw my focus outward, what do I need to keep in mind in order to maintain a positive outlook?
8. I wish to conquer my fears and live within a state of harmony. In order to make this my reality, what should I focus upon?
9. I will allow myself a day of rest, retreat, and sanctuary. As I remain within quiet refuge, what shall I let be my mantra?
10. What do I need to do I order to be released from that which no longer serves me?
11. At times it can be difficult to find a balance between our desires and our needs. What is it that I desire, and what is it that I need?
12. I release control, and in doing so I am rewarded with new perspective. What is the first thing I notice?

13. How can I be more prepared to deal with loss?
14. In which ways do I connect to my higher self already? Which areas have I yet to venture upon?
15. The journey of healing requires dedication and an open heart, what is the first step I need to take in order to allow myself to heal from the past.
16. Fears flourish within the darkness, what is it that my fears have to reveal to me?
17. That which I do, is that which will come back to me. How can I remember to always keep this in mind?
18. Through the moonlight my intuition radiates, what is it I am not seeing?
19. What are my daily allowances to refresh my body, rest my mind and nurture my spirit?
20. A mirror reveals more than just my reflection. How might I be a negative influence to myself?
21. Have I achieved things in the past year that are in accordance to my life plans? Am I on the right track for success?
22. Change is upon the horizon, what does the future hold for me?
23. How can I use that which the future holds to strengthen myself through the unknown?
24. As a being of peace, and serenity, I make the choice to know only love and light. How can I best maintain this outlook?
25. How do I feel about my image and how other people respond to it? In which ways am I setting examples for people to follow?
26. My shadow self is an extension of my inner layers; how can I begin to peel through to reveal the source of my pain?
27. What ignites my desire to look beyond that which my eyes allow me to see?
28. The veil is thinning this time of the year, what message do my spirit guides have for me?
29. What should I look for in order to connect better with other people?
30. In what ways can I best inspire others around me?
31. I wish to look upon my world with a new perspective, and feel a greater sense of connectivity. In order to make this my reality, where must I focus my energy?

Money Bag Canna-spell
Tumblr media
Nothing wrong with wanting some extra cash to find it’s way to you, so many forms it can take. Someone donating to you, extra hours at work, a pay raise or even finding 5 bucks in your old jeans. Here is a spell for a money charm bag to help you! This requires to sprinkle a tiny bit of your cannabis in the bag itself, enough you wont even notice.
Tools; - Green sack, mesh bag will work but keep in mind loose herbs so a solid one would be better - a Small pinch of Cannabis; Sativa if you can get it, but whatever you have will work - One of each coin; Penny, Nickle, Dime, and Quarter - Gold Glitter - Basil and Rosemary dried (about 2 teaspoons each) - Citrine crystal (chips of the crystal will work as well) - Green Candle - Anything extra you prefer; sigils, gold coins, notes with intentions, etc.
Steps;  - Light your candle, you can do this at your altar or where ever you prefer spell work - Add the herbs, Cannabis, Basil, and Rosemary to the bag - Add your coins, penny first, then nickle, dime, and quarter. Here you can chant, say a phrase, I prefer to speak out ‘Increase of money in my life.’ after I drop each one in.  - Add in the citrine, asking for the boost of energy - Add the extra bits you wish, including the gold glitter.  - Lay the bag in front of the candle and mentally imagine your wallets being filled, bank accounts not at zero, stress from money melting away. This is putting your intentions in this bag.
Now you can keep this bag with you but I wouldn’t suggest it due to cannabis, unless you’re in a legal state then you’ll be fine. The small amount of cannabis wont be able to over power the smell of basil and rosemary. If you can’t keep it with you on your altar will be fine. This is your money bag now, it’s going to attach money to you! Be sure to offer it thanks as you see your money growing, it’s working hard for you ;)

Note
Do you know any traditional Celtic dishes for yule? Everything I found so far is just generic Christmas-y treats and someone adding a star or something and calling it Celtic.
Indeed I do, my friend! I have three lovely cookbooks in my collection which I highly recommend on the subject:
Celtic Folklore Cooking (Joanne Asala)
Witch in the Kitchen (Cait Johnson)
The Food and Cooking of Ireland (Biddy White Lennon & Georgina Campbell)
Celtic Folklore Cooking includes an entire section in the index on dishes for Yule. The Food and Cooking of Ireland has a number of feast-worthy recipes, and a very informative foreword which describes the holiday traditions celebrated in Ireland today. Witch in the Kitchen has a lot of tasty vegetarian options for any occasion year-round.
Dishes for Yule include:
Apple Fritters
Baked Apples
Chestnut Soup
Chranachan
Christmas Plum Pudding
Eggnog
Faerie Cakes
Hot Buttered Rum
Irish Stew
Marmalade Loaf
Mulled Cider
Pan Haggerty
Roast Goose with Stuffing
Savory Yuletide Pie
Shortbread
Stuffed Acorn Squash
Stuffed Braised Beef
Tea Brack (aka Barm Brack)
Wassail
Stay tuned, I’ll be posting the recipes for all of these throughout the day!

Meditations based on the Major Arcana
Tumblr media
If you find yourself stressed or simply desire a different form of meditation, go ahead and pick one, or, better yet, have your tarot tell you which meditation you should do!
0. Fool – meditate to some calming music, find a nice track and let it fill your mind and body
1. Magician – recite a mantra of some sort, word or phrase, pick something meaningful to you, not just what the internet suggests
2. High Priestess – the practice of attending: look at and assess each thought you have as you meditate
3. Empress – focus on self-love, find things you appreciate about yourself, let love fill you and your soul
4. Emperor – count your heartbeats or your breaths
5. Hierophant – take this time to recite a prayer to a higher being, speak a blessing of some sort, or your equivalent
6. Lovers – send love, good vibes, and blessings to a loved one
7. Chariot – focus on each body part separately, flexing and relaxing each part from your toes to your head
8. Strength – stand up and do the sun salutation or a similar yoga exercise, or if you’d rather, go work out
9. Hermit – ask a deep, philosophical question and ponder on it for awhile
10. Wheel – diaphragmatic breathing: breath deeply from the diaphragm, so your stomach moves but your chest does not
11. Justice – find five things or people you are grateful for and meditate on them
12. Hanged Man – the practice of mindfulness: simply let your thoughts pass by as you meditate, not focusing on anything in particular
13. Death – take a short nap! please wake up, though
14. Temperance – the practice of visualization: visualize your dreams about the future
15. Devil – focus on each sense individually, what do you feel, hear, see, if you want you can eat a small treat and focus on what you taste
16. Tower – candle meditation: focus on a flame, image of a flame, or some sort of object
17. Star – take a bath or shower and focus on the water cleansing both your body and mind
18. Moon – acknowledge your worries, then give them up or let them go to a higher being
19. Sun – sit in sunlight or other bright light and focus on the brightness, draining all your negativity away to be replaced with positivity
20. Judgment – focus on the energy within, how it interacts with the earth and others around you
21. World – stand up and take a walk, preferably walk outside through nature
Enjoy and may all be well with each of you <3

Celebrate Yule
Tumblr media
Outside:
Leave out birdseed ornaments as offerings to the season
If snowing, play in the snowfall to appreciate the changing season or collect some for snow water
After the sun has gone down, burn a yule log in a bonfire
Take some friends and go wassailing!
In the Home:
Make stovetop potpourri as an alternative to incense
DIY gifts with your witch skills for your friends and family
Read a winter solstice tarot spread for yourself
Decorate your holiday tree, blessing the ornaments with good energy
Hang mistletoe for protection and (consensual!) kisses
In the Kitchen:
Make one of these Celtic Yule recipes
Prepare some traditional or non-traditional wassail for any adults
Bake mini yule logs to share with family and friends
Make Swedish Lussekatter rolls or Norwegian Julekake bread
In the Bath:
Bathe with fresh orange slices and frankincense and myrrh essential oils for a prosperity ritual bath
Take a lazy witch holiday LUSH bath (our suggestions here)
Do a pre-solstice ritual bath with essential oils
Make winter spice bath bombs and enchant them for prosperity
On your Altar:
Use colors like reds, greens, whites, and metallic colors
Add holly, pine, ivy, mistletoe, juniper, or cedar for some greenery
Decorate with a yule wish bottle to for some easy magic
Represent the seasonal harvest with oranges, pears, nuts, and berries
Incorporate snowflake obsidian, clear quartz, or bloodstone

☃️Ways to Celebrate Yule❄️
Yule is celebrated on the Winter Solstice and celebrates the return of the sun!
Tumblr media
☃️ Bake and cook for friends and family! Bless (with consent) the baked goods with the intent of prosperity and happiness and give your loved ones a delicious treat! You can try out wassail or mini Yule log cakes if you really want to get festive.
☃️ Decorate the home or an altar with mistletoe, holly, fairy lights, a Yule log, and a lovely homemade wreath! It will give your home or altar a touch of festivity.
☃️ Make some crafts with your friends and loved ones! You can try out these beautiful ice candle holders, make your own magical ornaments, and some candied oranges!
☃️ Divine your future to see what the next year holds for you! Gather some advice from your tarot cards, stones, bones, ravioli, and whatnot to see how bright the next year can be for you!
☃️ Take some time to do spells of peace, introspection, wishing, and new beginnings. If you know other witches, you can all try to do a spell together!
☃️ Write in your grimoire or book and reflect on the past year and its magical happenings. Write down goals that you want to achieve by the end of the year and for the upcoming year. Bless the page with motivation and love!
☃️ Volunteer and give back! If you have the time and energy, give back to your community. You can volunteer at a soup kitchen and bless food, donate old and unnecessary items and bless them, and so much more!
☃️ Create a Yule log and burn it in honor of the sun! Keep it around as a decoration for a while though since Yule logs are really pretty. You can keep it on an altar or dining room table!
☃️ Give gifts to your loved ones! Gifts don’t have to be extravagant. They can be as simple as blessed cookies, a spell bottle, or even a sigil. Of course, if you want to give someone a TV, then go ahead!
☃️ Build a fire with your loved ones and do some storytelling! This is especially great with kids. You can roast marshmallows over the fire and share stories, fiction or not, with your friends and family!

A Crash Course in Warding
Let’s just start a series of crash courses in witchcraft, since sometimes we need to learn things the quick and dirty way. Today, let’s talk about wards.
What are wards? Wards are protective energy barriers. They keep things out. You can place them around your home, certain rooms, even on certain objects. With practice and clear intentions, you can focus the wards to block out everything or only certain things. We’ll get to that in a bit.
Why should I ward my space and my things? Wards can keep out all sorts of things you don’t want in your home. They can block out negative entities, wayward spirits, mischievous entities, demons, and (if you’re really good at what you’re doing) even gods. Some people ward their divination tools so they know there are no spirits tampering with the results.
So what do I need to do first? Cleanse. This is very important. Wards are kind of like walls, or perhaps more accurately, bubbles. If you don’t clean the space first, you might trap things inside your ward bubble. You do not want that. There are lots of methods of cleansing, from burning sage to spritzing oil-infused water. Find a method you’re comfortable with and cleanse everything you’re going to be warding.
I’ve cleansed my home/item. Now what? Now we ward. I’m going to give you a couple methods. Let’s start with my favorite, incense warding.
Incense warding can also be done with spritzes of water/essential oil blends or herb-infused water if you can’t have smoke in your space. Whichever you’re using, you want to have a blend of protective herbs. Bay leaves, cinnamon, ginger, mustard seed, and salt are some great options that you can find in the grocery store, no fancy witch shop necessary. If you’re using incense, make sure you’re using natural incense and not super cheap stuff that’s artificially scented. The magic is in the herbs, and you won’t get that from fake scents.
How to Incense/Spritz Ward an Item
Smoke or spray item.
Visualize the smoke or spray clinging to the item and wrapping around it like a tight blanket, protecting it from anything that would cause harm (or interference, etc.).
How to Incense/Spritz Ward Your Space
Pick a place to start. I always start at my altar, but it’s up to you. If you’re doing multiple floors, start either at the top or bottom floor.
Moving continuously to your right, smoke or spray along the walls and door frames. As you go, imagine a barrier being formed around the walls, ceiling, and floor, pushing outwards to fill the room. Visualize the smoke or spray forming the barrier to keep out anything that will do you harm. [If you have a hard time with visualization, you can simply focus on the intent of the smoke or spray keeping things out.]
Keep moving right, following the layout of your home, making sure you get all the closet spaces. You basically want to outline the entire area you’re protecting, whether it’s you’re room or your whole house.
For multiple floors, repeat on each level.
For big layouts where there are rooms in the middle, go around those rooms as well.
I like to reinforce the wards over outside doors, windows, and mirrors. These are all passages of sorts, and when I reach them, I use the incense to draw a pentagram in the air over them. This is entirely up to you.
You’re done when you’ve reached the point where you began.
So why do we go to the right? Is that important? Kind of. Going to the right is like going clockwise. It’s about making things and progression, where going to the left or counter-clockwise is about deconstruction or reversal. [I read this idea in a witchy book a long time ago and will try to find a source when I can. If you honestly don’t feel it makes a difference, do whatever you’re comfortable with.]
Can I place wards that keep out certain things but not others? Sure. When you’re going around your space/warding your item, your intent is what’s important. I like to ward out entities that mean harm - it’s nice and general and doesn’t keep the fae out. Some people might want certain spirits and not others. Have your intentions clear in your mind as you place your wards.
That’s neat and all, but what are some other ways to ward? Let’s list a few.
Symbol/Sigil Wards
Choose (or make) a symbol or sigil that has protective properties. I’ve done this with Pluto’s astrological symbol because I worship him and it’s my way of being like, “Hey, Pluto. Please protect me, kthanxbai.” Pentagrams are nice and basic witchy/pagan symbols if you like them.
Draw the symbol over doors and windows. You do not literally have to draw it. It can be in water, incense smoke, or just your finger against the surface if you want.
As you’re drawing, make sure you have your intentions in mind - that nothing harmful can pass through this door, that the windows remain closed against entities, etc.
Energy Bubbles (if you have control over your energy)
Pick an item - any item.
Get your warding intentions in mind.
Channel lots of energy into the item. Visualize it emanating from the item in a bubble to fill your space.
If you’ve got mad skillz, you can form the bubble to the walls and be super exact with where its barriers are.
Vocal Wards
If you like spoken (or thought) spells, come up with a small chant to protect your space.
You can repeat this chant as you focus on your item being protected or as you walk around your home, protecting every room.
This is really great to incorporate into basically any other form of warding and gives your magic an extra bit of oomph.
I’ve heard wards can “fade” over time. True or false? Wards are just energy. Like all energies, they can disperse and weaken over time, or if something particularly nasty puts effort into destroying them. Redo your wards every so often (I do mine every few months, but it’s up to you), and especially before spiritual interactions. I also like to do mine after I’ve had lots of company, to kind of clear out family’s lingering energies and reinforce what I don’t want in my house.
In general, the intent of your wards is the most important part. Know what you want to keep out. This concludes our crash course on warding. Now go forth and protect some stuff!

DIY: Brews and Potions
Tumblr media
Witches standing over an open fire while stirring up potions in a cauldron is one of the many romanticized views of witchcraft. Today, witches brew many things for love, luck, health, wealth, and etc. Potions are a widely regarded instrument for witches. Potions are simply liquid spells that can be taken internally or applied externally to the body. Teas, enchanted perfumes, tinctures, and washes are the many forms these spells can come in. Some are used for healing, others are used in ritual or magickal work.
Kitchen Herbs and Common plants for Brews
Back in the day, homemade teas and salves were the only medicine available. Using these things today is still very popular and a holistic approach to health that treats the mind, body, and soul together. What you use does not have to be expensive, it can come from your back yard or your home. Many of what you already have you can use to make tinctures, teas, and decoctions. Also, syrups, tonics, waters, and vinegars. If you work with the herbs you have at home already on hand, you will be able to create your own remedy with a distinct local flavor.
The Power Behind the Plants
It is believed that many spiritual forces animate the world; called animism. When working with a plant or crystal, or performing a spell or ritual at a specific place, witches work with the spirits behind those plants or crystals, and call upon the spirit of that location to help them in their work. There is a special partnership and alliance between the witch and spirit, manifesting in forms of animals (familiars) or in the form of other plants, crystals, and locations. Over time, working with these spirits on various projects will deepen the relationship and the witch will gain information on magical associations, properties, and lore. These things often come through dreams, inspirations, or visions. The spirit will gain energy, attention, and physical shelter as animals or plants or crystals carried as a talisman.

Teas and Decoctions for Health
Using teas and decoctions (herb-and-water remedies in the form of conceited potions that your drink) is a very easy homeopathic way to get started. They are made with dried or fresh herbs, roots, or flowers infused in hot water. Cold infusions is used for tinctures, where the herbal properties are absorbed and released into liquids over time.
Decoction Method
For plants woody and seedy such as root and bark, use this method
Once the plant parts are boiled, place on a low heat and set to simmer for 15-20 minutes
After simmered, cool them and strain them, pressing the herbs through a cheesecloth or strainer
Ready to drink
Tea Method
For flowers, leaves, fruits, and/or stems of plans, use this method
Start steeping the herbs in the water before it reaches full boil
Once the water begins to steam or boil, remove it from heat
Steam for no more than 5-10 minutes
While hot, strain into a container
Drink right away or follow the cold tea method
Cold Tea Method
Following all the preparations of the tea method, after straining, pour into a container and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Herbs for Teas and Decoctions
If using a tea ball, only use a pinch of each plant or spice. If using an infusion pot, or something similar, use approximately ¼ teaspoon of each ingredient. Tinctures and Tonics for Health
A tincture is a traditional herb infusion made with an alcohol base. A tonic usually uses either vegetable glycerin or apple cider vinegar as the base. The alcohol used in tinctures must be at least 100 proof, or 50%, alcohol, which is why most vodkas and gins are used. Tinctures can also be made with vegetable glycerin or apple cider vinegar for those with alcohol issues, although less potent and yet still effective.
Crafting Tinctures and Tonics
Tools needed:
Two mason jars
Cheesecloth
The herbs/plants/spices
Measuring cups
An herb grinder
Alcohol/vegetable glycerin/apple cider vinegar
Tool to measure the dosage such as droppers for infant medication
Steps for recipe creation:
When preparing a tincture, the rule of thumb is you want a 1:4 ratio of herb to alcohol. If your herbs start to float, your ratio is good. Allow them to settle, and add a little more alcohol until the mixture is fully saturated.
Prepare the ingredients
Fill the mason jar with the herbs/plants/spices
Add the alcohol or alcohol substitute  (If using apple cider vinegar as your base, you will need to take the additional step of laying wax paper on top of the jar lid)
Keep in a cool, dark place for a month (some may require refrigeration, and that will be noted)
Shake twice daily
After 1 month, strain the herbal matter from the liquid into the second jar using a cheesecloth (squeeze the cheesecloth to get out as much of the liquid as you can)
After straining, fill the remainder of the jar with distilled water–this dilutes the alcohol, allowing you to ingest it directly
Ready for use

Magickal Tinctures
When making a tincture for use magickally and spiritually, shake the tincture two times a day to direct your energy into the jar and activate the magick within the herbs.
Tincture-Charging Spell
Materials:
1 green candle (herb spirits)
1 white candle (spirit and magick)
1 candle to charge the tincture (color depends on spell)
1 mixing bowl
Herbs and alcohol for the tincture (or alcohol substitute)
2 Mason jars
Cheese cloth
Ritual:
Place the three candles in a triangle on your altar or workspace. The white candle should be the top of the triangle (facing away from you to direct the energy out into the universe). The green and other candle form the base
Place the bowl at the center of the altar, and place your containers of herbs and alcohol on the floor
Light the white candle while stating: “For the power of spirit”
Light the green candle while stating: “For the herbal spirits”
Light the colored candle for your need, and state your need
Place an herb in the bowl, state a thank-you blessing to the herb, and explain why you are using that herb. Repeat for each herb, and as you add each herb, stir the mixture of herbs clockwise for increasing or bringing something to you and counterclockwise if you are trying to remove or decrease something in your life
Once you have mixed all the herbs in the bowl, hold your hands over the mixture and state your intent
Visualize a light coming out of your hands for that need (red for love and passion or power; green for money, success, growth and fertility; blue for healing; yellow for success; etc)
Pour the mixture into one of the mason jars and add the alcohol (do this at a safe distance form the lit candles)
Place the lid on the jar
Remove the mixing bowl from the alter and put the mason jar with the tincture blend in its place, in the center of your candles. Keep the mason jar there until the candles have finished burning
Shake the tincture, focusing your mental, emotional, and physical energy into the jar. As you shake, chant: “I can upon the powers green, Release the powers unseen. Herbs awakened on this day, Blessings in this tincture stay.”
Shake the jar twice daily for one month, each time visualizing the need behind the tincture
Once the month has passed, strain the mixture into the second jar using the cheesecloth.
Now the tincture is ready to be used in magickal work
