There’s a beat, the hint of a sight. He’s never been that much for small talk, but most of the time, he can tolerate company - the silent kind, that is, though he’s no stranger to attention. Some poor soul he doesn’t quite recall the name of will sit close and observe once in a while, perhaps interested in the macabre operations taking place in front of their eyes; in easier circumstances, he might even enjoy the chat. But this is finicky work, precision is needed.

“ A lively youth, by the sound of it ” words come out in a tone of feigned interest, one he had hoped would be more convincing. The scalpel is put down slowly, metal barely making any noise against the worn-out table; the last stitch came out too tight, an unnoticeable flaw to anyone else, an irreparable error to him. Thoughtless conversation may come in handy now, so he slowly turns around, attempts to relax on the chair, “ I suppose you're from here? Los Angeles, I mean. It used to be quite lively too, in my day. ”

There’s moments of neverending silence - in a house so crowded and so old, at times everyone seems to be speaking in tongues, a neverending chattering, white noise. Small company is a comfort, even to someone like her - especially to her. Silence and memories, the quiet sharing of it - all a ghost can do, perhaps. “ Is there anything you miss ? ”

Halloween’s aftermath can be more trying than the day itself. It takes a single peek through the kitchen window to see the mess the lavish garden has been reduced to in one single night. “ I wonder where those kids’ parents are, ” it’s a dry remark, followed by the shortest of sighs. Her quiet dead daughter and the ever-crying baby in the basement make her often forget the destructive nature of youth “ Should we do something about it ? Clean it up, maybe ? ”
