What drew you to Gotham?

“Well cause it’s the farthest I could get away from my hometown without leaving the country of course!”

Insecta snickered, her hooked nose crinkling from her wide fanged smile as she did so.

“Nah but seriously, it just seemed like the best place to go to my 22-year-old mind, I was fresh outa university and didn’t want to stay in Sacramento for another minute”

Especially since I poisoned the entirety of the hospital staff with fire ant venom before I left

“I knew Gotham had a high crime rate, so what’s another D-lister? Though nowadays I like to think of myself as more B tier. I’ve been living here a while though now, and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else.”

“Oh oh! Also the littering problem here is huge, so there’s a crazy amount of little friends here!”

Speaking of friends, at what point would you call someone a friend? Does it take a long time for you to be able to open and trust?

“It’s kinda hard to pinpoint a specific time when I can call someone a friend, it just kinda happens. Though, it’s usually after prolonged instances of hanging out with someone. I’ll just notice it one day like: huh, this person been around me willingly for a few months and I don’t hate their company… guess we’re cool. So maybe within a few months I suppose… though there are times where I could be a bit too trusting for my own good…”

When Insecta has this revelation with a person, she gets weary if the person truly likes her or if they have ulterior motives for getting close to her, though usually the enjoyment of the companionship outweighs this feeling soon enough. Sometimes she’ll try avoiding the person while second guessing if she even wants friends. there are times where this avoidance does its job and the person eventually leaves, leading to Joan regretting her decision and hating herself for her own self- sabotaging. Other times, people persist their budding friendship with Joan despite her avoidance of them, and the friendship will grow from there.

She felt Rorschach’s fist connect with the side of her jaw, driving her head back and causing Insecta’s antennae to make a faint whooshing sound as they recoiled with her head. It hurt of course, but what she hated about hits to the jaw the most is how they made her teeth clack against each-other from the force of the punch, and the sickening click that her jaw made as she worked it in a circle to test if it was broken or not.

…That and the small voice in Insecta’s head telling her that she needs to quit getting into fights cause sooner or later she’ll end up in the hospital, and this time a titanium plate isn’t going to save her…

Insecta felt her jaw with her finger tips, emitting a groan before locking her eyes with the swirling black shapes on his mask. Waving her hand in a straight line from the floor into the air, a isopod shot from the ground in its rolled up state into the direction of Rorschach’s gut, growing to the size of a basket ball as it made contact with him.

Only because Insecta had hit him with such force, and Rorschach had not been expecting it, his foot stumbled forward but only a little before he found his balance. A slight burn from where Insecta made contact, his hat had flown off and in that miniscule moment Rorschach watched it tumble away from him on the ground.

There didn't need to be any other words exchanged. Insecta wasn't going down without a fight. So pivoting on the balls of his feet, Rorschach swiftly turned around to throw a right hook back.

How do have a hard time making friends because of the way you look? How do you manage getting around Gotham if you do?

The thing is, is that I don’t try to make friends. They just kinda happen, my social circle isn’t very big, but it doesn’t really have to do with my physical features, I’m just not very social, though the way I look probably doesn’t help me in that regard. Over the course of my life, I’ve learnt that a surprising amount of people have a phobia for bugs, it’s more than you think, and the way I look can trigger that for some people. The wings, the antennae, the abdomen, etc; it freaks people out. but hey, what can you do? It didn’t stop at random people though, it would happen in my own family too, and believe me that hurts.

I’ve learnt ways to hide certain things to help people be more comfortable around me and to have some crumb of a secret identity, which is hard to do if you’re a criminal. The best I can do usually is hide my antennae in my hair or under a hat and conceal my abdomen under a long coat, all three appendages are fairly flexible, so it doesn’t make it too challenging. I suppose that somewhat answers your question about how I manage getting around Gotham, though half the time I barely need a disguise. Gotham citizens see so much shit that when I do leave the ship, I just wear my normal clothes and they never bat an eye, just walk to the other side of the street, and that’s fair, I can live with that.

"For you, Insecta? I know a bat that's perfect, and that's the Myotis vivesi, better known to most people as the Fish-Eating Bat." Kirk grins widely as he talks about the species, his boyish cheeks almost pink with delight as he details their hunting behaviour, how their diet consisted of fish and small crustations. "Most bats eat insects or fruit. They don't typically divert from these staples other than a few species like Vampire Bats which live primarily on blood or Ghost Bats that prey upon other, smaller species of bat. No, Fish-Eating Bats are unique in hunting fish, perhaps some of the only kind that do." He didn't feel it was appropriate to suggest an insect-eating species to the woman who resembled one, much less commanded the creatures like her own personal army. He'd prefer leaving with his body intact, but he can't help talking about the creatures a little more, so great was his interest in the topic. "Did you know they can survive drinking seawater? I can't think of many mammals that can, much less ones that aren't already marine animals but Fish-Eating Bats are truly a marvel to behold! It's so sad they're only found in a select few locations in the Gulf of California." Kirk sighed wistfully, but he's unable to resist a playful grin as he spots a can of tinned fish close by. Perhaps he was more spot on about her bat likeness than he thought?

As Kirk spoke, Insecta’s mouth steadily quirked up into a fanged grin, she immediately took note of the bats common name and her own affinity for fish, she always enjoyed when people would go on about their passions, she thought it was honestly cute how people would be so giddy over things they loved, much like she gets when she starts talking about bugs. She knew there were many species of bats that feasted on insects, she can’t fault them for it. Hell, half of her “babies” enjoy eating their buggy brothers and sisters, can’t blame bats and bugs for being bats and bugs. Insecta was grateful though that Kirk didn’t give her a bat with an insect diet though, her smile actually widening when Kirk started naming down additional facts about them. Insecta smiled warmly at the man. “Wow… that’s actually quite interesting, lemme get a look at what these fellas look like…”

She took a minute to pull out her phone, entering the name of the bat into the search engine. She cupped her hand over her mouth while voicing a long “awww” “They’re frickin adorable!”

Bald-faced hornets

In the past Insecta would mostly just compare Rorschach to any insect that had a pattern of black and white coloring, and when eventually gaining his phone number, and sending him pictures of bugs she thought resembled him. One of them was calligrapha beetles, though they only reminded her of Rorschach for their coloring, no other factors. the bug that she thinks embodies Rorschach entirely is the bald-faced hornet, not only does it fit Rorschach’s color scheme of black and white, it’s also a highly aggressive insect that has a horrible venomous sting with a sharp memory for remembering people who’ve wronged them. Now, since Insecta has only seen the hostile side of Rorschach, she feels like this fits him very well.

Cockroaches/ Banana cockroaches

NOW HEAR ME OUT, Insecta considers this like a compliment, she fricken loves cockroaches and thinks of them very highly. There’s many different ways Joan associates people with bugs wether it be patterns and colors, traits they share, or just random things that remind her of them, and in khares case it’s a few things.

When she first met khare, it was mostly because cockroaches remind her of diners (not that paulis diner has a cockroach problem, Insecta actually does a quarterly search of them once she considered khare a friend) many diners that Joan would visit in her hometown had infestations of them, but once Insecta found out about khares mutation she had even more reasons why she reminded her of cockroaches. Cockroaches can regrow limbs (in the nymph stage) like khare can, and when Insecta got to see the eye growths on khare, taking note of the yellow ones specifically, the color reminding her of a subspecies of Cuban cockroaches. A switch in her brain flipped and she just thought “ah not common German cockroach no, Costa Rican banana cockroaches yes!!”

Jewel scarab beetles. When Insecta first met Groa and saw how the light caught on the metallic parts of her body, she instantly thought of jewel scarabs specifically the sliver variety and how the two had this in common.
