How I Choose My Business Name 

Hello, Today I am going to tell you the little story behind my studio business name. At first i found one that was banal, boring,  and then i found one that made boom boom in my head. I so love it. I am feeling it in my skin! 

Years ago when I was creating this studio with a friend, i wanted to choose a name that was more public and direct, so i choose Seven Design because both our name had seven letters and we planned to offer about 7 type of services including photography and amateurs graphic design for friends and small business around. We used to do handpainted banners, wedding photos for our friends and wedding invitations of course. After my friend left and travelled i decided to change everything and focus the studio more on wedding invitations as it was more creative to me. When i was a kid, i loved mixing everything together to do creative explosive like Mc Gyver. Growing up,  I enjoy more mixing ribbons, buckles, pearls, painting, illustrator design and of course gorgeous papers to make one beautiful piece of art. So I needed a business name that would tell how beautiful my creations are… On top of that i wanted something starting with letter G. That’s crazy, right? I spent days looking in french and english dictionaries to find words and i did find some like, glee, glimpse, grande, global, graphic and i though about mixing them with other words to make my name like most professional do… but I wasn’t in my skin with those names.

Letter G runs in my family. My mom’s name Germine B.(RIP GB), my sister’s name is Germanie and mine is Gerdine. Even dad has letter G in his name as well. My family business’s name starts with G as well. My ex’s name started with G too. So crazy! Even though i wasn’t creating a family business and i didn’t have to put them in it, I fell like i had to because they are the only one person who really encouraged me to start my own business. One day i was looking at myself in a mirror, discouraged, desperate that i couldn’t find that lovely name that i was looking for and then…I saw my beauty spot in the face (grain de beauté in french) and I was like yes yes yes i got it !!! jumping everywhere like a kid…..Grain de Beauté…with GB initials is exactly my mom initials too…. and mine too… and it sounds good and classic for a wedding studio, but it doesn’t specify what we do so i had to add some words after… i worked it out for years with the logo too, and finally, i got it like i wanted and i am ready to make that name make its way out there and speak for himself by working hard day after day. Some friends, mostly men, didn’t like the name and suggested something with the word “design “in it like my previous name or something more masculine in the logo and the fonts i used…. nope nope and nope. Not everyone has to like it and whatever the name i choose, not everyone gonna like it anyways, and i am good with that fact. Women don’t have to do things like men even if we can. I choose to stay true to myself finding my own identity on my business and i think its a good thing because a business should reflect its owner’s soul like Martha Stewart, Sara Bakely, Tory Burch and Ceci Johnson…should i continue?

So my advice to you guys… If you want to make your name special, create a name that you can feel in your skin, one that you are proud to pronounce, one that glow in your heart, one that inspire you every single day. It has to be original but not too hard to pronounce. It has to be easy to remember as well and not too long.

We made this cobalt rustic chic collection in memory of queen Anacaona and her husband Caonabo, a indigenous queen of Hispanola (actual Haiti) who’d rather die after Christopher columbus killed her husband instead of becoming the concubine of the conquestadors who came to dig our gold and diamonds from the earth in exchange of foods. 

We handpainted the houses of the native haitians of this period on the back of the die cut invitation and on handmade favor boxes and we added a feather detail to highligh the original queen’s hair pin and feather hat. We cultivate raw cocoa bean that was one of our main ressource at this peiod, reason why we filled the favor boxes with chocolate cookie made from raw cocoa.

Ensemble ce jeune couple va faire des bulles comme deux petits poissons dans l’eau. Et nous l’avons bien compris avec cette carte au thème de plage très originale découpée avec des coquilles, poissons, étoiles de mer...
