Project Overview
Project Highlights:
Working with a personal and passionate topic.
Talking and gaining guidance from with Vasanti Unka and Tatiana Tavares
Stepping out of my comfort zone using Procreate
Seeing the development of my work from the beginning stages
Project Challenges:
Changes that were brought about due to COVID, I had gone through creative blocks, stages of lost motivation, had to adjust my final output and there was no end exhibition
Self-authored text, personally never been a fan of story telling but it was a good challenge
Procreate was more time consuming than expected.
Understanding the attribute of children's books
Finding printers to print my large book size.
Not being able to see my possible paperstock choices and options in person.
Not being able to test print
What I would do differently:
have less spreads so I could focus on quality and full illustrated spreads.
Organise my time better because I did miss out on making stickers which i was looking forward too, although printing those during covid would've been a mission on its own.

Printing
Printing had been a struggle because my book was bigger than an A3 size flat many printers were unable to help me. However, I managed to contact Image concept who were able to help me print my book as I wanted before my deadline.

Procreate Journey
Using procreate was a difficult to start with but after a few hours of drawing I got use to the application.
The pages I would make in procreate had a limitation on layers therefore I would have to keep duplicating and merging layers to build the page up. This was a struggle when I wanted to change something but also a good thing incase I messed up.
I also underestimated the amount of time the spreads would take to complete. The more simple pages/spreads took 4-7 hours however the more detailed took 10-15 hours, I’ve included examples of these spreads above.

Progression of Pages
It’s interesting to look back at how the pages have evolved and how far I’ve come.

Word Search Glossary
I thought because I was no longer making Activity pages I could incorporate this idea within my book with a glossary word search for interactive learning. For this I used a website (https://thewordsearch.com/maker/) to produce a word search then designed it in Adobe Illustrator.

Inspired Image Creation
When reading the book Sulwe, I was greatly drawn to this page and it inspired me to incorporate this style in my own work.

I have decided to use Helsinki for the Display Font of my book.
A minimalist twist on comic book style
Chunky and slightly slanted
The font is ultra-legible and has a fun, intrepid spirit.
Try using this font in picture books themed on adventure and escapism (it is widely recommend as a good font for children across multiple sites).
