Grimoires

A grimoire is also known as a" book of spells" and is a textbook of magic, typical contents are instructions on how to create magical objects, like talismans and amulets, how to perform spells and charms and how to summon supernatural entities.

Grimoires use small amounts of energy from nature and life forces as well as weak magical energy from humans acting like a semi-permanent magic circle, a grimoire can never be truly destroyed.

I have watched a few movies and TV shows that contain grimoires like:

Discovery of Witches

Hocus Pocus

Ash V Evil Dead

Some grimoires like the Necronomicon was made out of human skin, hair and blood.

My Feisty food inspiration

My inspiration came from the Subway restaurant logo.

I used the bright yellow as it stands out and also represents the health movement, people who pay attention to their diet.

Subway uses the Sans Serif Font which are usually bold text like Ariel and Helvetica, popular, powerful and pleasing to the eye. I used 80's Neon font which is a modern and futuristic typeface.

Leonardo Da Vinci's Notebooks

Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) was an Italian Renaissance architect, engineer, sculptor, inventor and painter. His notebooks contain diagrams, drawings, personal notes and observations.

In the notebooks Leonardo wrote in 16th Century mirror writing, which reads in reverse from right to left. There was much speculation the mirror writing was used so he could only decipher his notes or that it was simply because he was left handed and maybe found it easier to write right to left.

He worked on loose sheets of paper, his papers were at some stage folded into booklets and later bound.

From Dusk till Dawn - Titty Twister Bar

This film is written by Quentin Tarantino who is famous for his blood thirsty and graphic films. The bar was the feeding ground for the vampires, luring bikers and truckers to the bar.

The film is about two criminal brothers who take a family hostage in order to cross into Mexico and end up trapped in the bar and end up in a bloodthirsty battle with vampires.

Star Gate Portal

The story of Stargate SG-1 begins a year after the feature film when the United States Government learns that an ancient alien device called the Stargate can access a network of other Stargates on a multitude of planets and in space. SG-1 is an elite United States Air Force special operations team from Earth who explore the galaxy and defend against alien threats.

The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe

The film is about four children which were relocated to a large country house following wartime evacuation.

The come across a wardrobe which is a portal to Narnia, a land of talking animals and mythical creatures that is ruled by an evil White Witch.

I suppose this is the closest idea for my portal as it is set in an old house, mine is more industrial set on a castle ruin but the concept of a building being my portal is a little relevant here.

Alice in Wonderland - The rabbit hole

In this story Alice literally falls down a rabbit hole, taking her to Wonderland. In this case falling down the rabbit hole meant entering a strange and absurd alternative universe, which many believe was supposed to represent a psychedelic experience.

Harry Potter- 9 3/4 Platform

Platform 9 3/4 is a secret platform at Kings Cross Station in London. From this location students for Hogwarts are able to catch the Hogwarts Express train. This train runs directly to Hogsmeade Station, close by the school. You enter the secret platform by running at a wall which is a portal to the secret platform.

Stranger Things - Hawkins Lab

Hawkins Lab was where they experimented on children with supernatural abilities.

During the match, Eleven was able to overpower Vecna with her psychic abilities to keep him pinned to the Rainbow Room wall as his body disintegrated, but before he disintegrated completely, she unintentionally opened a gate to the Upside Down behind him, which he fell through.

In another part of Hawkins Lab, the Tank Room another gate was opened by Eleven when she made contact with a creature from another dimension. Scientists investigated the Gate, from which strange tendrils and membranes slowly unfurled and spread into the underground complex.

I also looked at log cabins as all log cabins are very different and unique but I just wanted a simple looking one. I chose this images as these cabins are easy to size and texture for my render.

My portal gates main structure is the castle ruins the houses sit on so I looked at different images of cable ruins to get an idea of what shape, size and textures it would be.

How to add a physical sky.

To create a physical sky for your render you would need to go to the light icon and hold it down until you get the option to add a physical sky. Once you have your physical sky you can just the time and location of your sun/sky, you can also just the colour and intensity of the sun. You can also add atmosphere, fog, volumed clouds and sky objects.

I used fog in my render and to get the fog how I wanted I adjusted the height to make sure the fog covered the whole structure. And density of the fog so I could still see my render through the fog.

My finished chair.

The process of making the chair was simple. Firstly get a cube and flatten it to create the seat part. Then select the cube and press c to put it into edit mode to then select the squares you want to extrude to create the legs and the back board.

To create the hole in the back board you will need to add a sweep to a new cube to cut out the hole in the back board.

I think it went well considering it was my first time using the software.

My evil version of my two posters. I like this design but I feel like I could have spent more time on it, I like the leech and the title but the bowl and the chopstick look rushed and unfinished.

Textures to make a film or game poster look old and worn out. And examples of these textures on old and newer movies. This jaws one has a crinkled paper texture over the top to give it an old look.
